Dimension Door vs Grapple

Rules Questions

Hey,

If I have a wondrous item that grants me the ability:

"When it is activated, you can instantly teleport (with no chance of error) up to 10 feet."

Activation: Swift (command)

would anything prevent me from using it to escape from a grapple?

It would depend of the method of activation, For example command word woul allow yu to scape.

The activation method is as listed above: Swift (command)

I interpret that as... a swift action, command word.

Nope. Sounds designed specifically for getting out of grapples.

Oh sorry, i did not see it. Then yes you can use the item to scape a grapple.

I know this item. It is a 3.5item from the MIC. Back in 3.5 I reccomended it for just this purpose. While I am personally loathe to use 3.5 stuff in my PF games I see no rules that would prevent it from being used this way in a PF game.

Thanks all,

Yes BNW, i actually named in the Clockwork DeGrapplator.

Yes it's an item from MIC, however, it's just as easily create-able as a custom item following the Magic Item Creation rules.

Kybryn, those same Magic Item Creation rules were in 3.5 and they were just as problematic to use. Honestly, why is it everyone wants to create stuff using them thinking it is a peice of cake...just follow the formula? Sheesh. (Note: I am reffering to how people think they can make certain items such as an infinite use Cure light wounds item for only 1800gp.)

(Dont mind me, Im tired atm.)

In all honesty it's a complicated item (dimension doors range is long, but this ports you 10 ft), but my point is that it could exist, given that the spell dimension door exists. Just responding to your point about allowing 3.5 stuff in a pathfinder game.

And no worries

Two things..

DImension door despite the name doesn't actually make a door. its just a short range teleport.

Custom magic items are supposed to be VERY careful about changing the action economy. 10 foot swift action teleports are deadly for flanking.

Yeah, MIC broke alot of unspoken rules regarding action economy. Honestly, its one of the reasons I prefer to keep 3.5 material with 3.5 and not PF. That being said there is definitely a need for new magic items...I am waiting anxiously for Ultimate Equipment.

BNW,
Who would argue that this spell would create a door???

And yes, you're right about it being deadly if so employed.

The item is an anklet from "magic item compendium"

But what argument are you trying to make?

Are you suggesting you'd ban it from a 3.5 game?

New items and new rules should be considered case by case, 3.5 or PF.

I think that modifying the action is what gives magic items flavor!!! If not it just function as a lifeless reservoir of extra skill points, spells, and a ability scores. Thats what i get from leveling up. I want something unique.

Nicos, I do consider them case by case. I said prefer I didn't say ban. I start with 'no', might move to 'maybe', and if really lucky someone might get me to reach 'yes'.

Kybryn, many items can grant special stuff (without being skills, spells, or ability scores) and still not modify the action economy. I simply don't like how MIC heavily modified action economy.

good system.

Liberty's Edge

Is this the Anklet of Translocation? I think I remember that item.

One thing to keep in mind is that if it works as dimension door, you get no more actions until your next turn. That means AoOs, immediates, or further actions on the same turn.
