Magus, The Kensai, and fighter training

Rules Questions

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

So I came across something rather odd while looking over kensai.

The kensai's fighter training replaces knowledge pool not the magus fighter training.

So now he get his level -3 for purpose of feats in terms of his favored weapon and half his level for purpose of feats.

Do these stack? Was this intended or not? because I've been looking it over and nowhere does it say he loses the original power so it seems just plain confusing

The Exchange

You gain both abilities. And you can choose which you use. They do not stack.
You can either count your effective fighter level as your cl-3 or cl/2.

In instances like this when you are not gaining any kind of bonus they don’t stack since they are just 2 different abilities that have a similar effect.

The author talks about it here. They get an improved fighter training at 7th level, earlier than normal.

Dark Archive

Paizo probably mis-printed something. Perhaps Paizo meant for it to replace Knowledge Pool AND Fighting Training at level 10, because there's no real reason to have both, and the archetype's fighting training is obviously better.

FAQ and move on.

I'm sure this has been brought up before.

kk thank you I thought that was weird :P

I actually have a question concerning how the "Fighter Levels -3" works concerning feats that improve with levels. For example, if you have Power attack, is the base attack bonus that you calculate equal to the base attack bonus of a fighter -3 (+9 BAB at 12th level) or the normal BAB progression for a Kensai?

you still count as having your own BAB.

you count as fighter levels, not fighter BAB
also, nice 11 year necro

Power attack also has no prerequisite of figher levels - so level -3 would have no impact on power attack even if it was level based.

Fighter Training (Ex): Starting at 7th level, a kensai counts his magus level –3 as his fighter level for the purpose of qualifying for feats (if he has levels in fighter, these levels stack), but forfeits the benefit of such feats with weapons other than his favored weapon. This ability replaces knowledge pool.

Fighter Training specifies it is only for qualifying for feats. It does not affect how the feat functions, just if or when you can buy them. The wording in both the standard Magus and the Kensia are identical in this respect. You still use your characters actual stats including BAB and anything else.
