Conceptual Rules Question

Homebrew and House Rules

I've got an idea for this monster based loosely on Spiderman's Venom. It'll be a symbolic creature and will bond to the first creature it interacts with (likely the party fighter). He'll get a difficult reflex save against it, but if he fails it will take over his body. At that point a few things will happen.

-It'll give its host a large boost to natural armor, damage reduction, strength, and con.
-It will give its host 4 tentacle attacks in addition to his normal attack routine.

The creature will resist any attempt to remove it from its host (by strength checks or anything similar), attacking with the tentacles. If the party resorts to attempting to subdue the host by any other means (lethal attacks, nonlethal, spells) it will seize control of its host and use him to kill those attacking to the best of its ability. It will use the fighter's full attack routine and its natural attacks.

Thinking I might allow opposed strength checks each round by the fighter to limit the creature's attacks (unless attacked).

What do you guys think? Is using a reflex save legitimate for a creature that takes over the hosts body and forces him to strike as it desires ok?

Should be in Homebrew or uh...conversions. Flagged for the moderators.

Something like that... I'd suggest 2 saves...

Reflex save to avoid getting slimed in the 1st place, and then a will save to avoid the "it will seize control of its host and use him to kill those attacking to the best of its ability" part

So... what is the negative side to having this... symbolic creature? Anger management problems?

No, you just adopt the EMO style. -5 on intimidation checks. :)

It'll cause people to react to any damage with immediate mindless and indiscriminate violence towards the person responsible. Caught in the wizard party member's fireball? Attack and kill. Hurt incidentally? Attack and kill. Best friend shoves you or tries to remove the symbote on you? Attack and kill.

Why would something asking for advice on building a monster and on the conceptual idea of controlling a PC through reflex saves belong in Homebrew?

Shadow Lodge

in 3.5 they had items named skins. they were gooey coating that would cover your entire body, items and all. you could take those (magic item compendium) and add on the intelligent quality with the chaotic evil alignment.

that would be exactly how i would make a venom type symbiote.

i would add the cursed quality of not being able to be removed as a gm. a player cannot control that aspect but you could as a gm.

Grand Lodge

The dreamscarred press psionics book has such skins. Use those, as intelligent magic items.
