What to buy for after the beginners box?

Advice

My husband's birthday is coming up soon and we are also almost done with the beginners box. Any advice on what I could buy him so we can continue our pathfinder experiences?

Right now we have:
Beginners Box
Bestiary
Game Mastery Guide
Core Rulebook

ETA: Oh, it might also be helpful to know he is our GM.

Advanced Player's Guide is a must. I found it really changed the game for the better. Also, Bestiary 2 - you never have enough monsters.

Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

Bestiary 2
Bestiary 3
Advanced Players Guide

A GM is pretty much good with these.

In my opinion, Advanced Player's Guide is a great buy...once you are comfortable playing the core rules. Jumping straight from the beginner box to "Core + Options" would have been too much for me, anyhow. I'd suggest learning to walk before running, etcetera.

Depending on what the OP is looking for, I'd actually go for some of Paizo's modules. That is something they are phenomenal at.

Crypt of the Everflame was designed to teach the Core Rules. It also has two sequels: Masks of the Living God and City of Golden Death. The three would take players from 1st through to 5thish level - so they could probably be played entirely within the Beginner Box rules, but would also provide a good avenue for exploring some of the Core Rules options.

If your husband is new to RPGs, I think reading through professionally written adventure modules is a good investment of time. You may only play them once or twice, but they'll probably inspire your own adventures and give you tips/ideas/fallback monsters to use.

If you've already played other RPGs, just not PF and he's fine at coming up with his own stuff - well scrap that advice. :)

Thanks! Good advice. Everyone we play with, including my husband and I, are complete newbs. The only thing is with those modules you listed our characters will already be level 5 when we're done with the Beginner Box. Would those still work even if we're higher level? Or do most people start new Characters once they are out of the beginner box?

No you're right - they wouldnt work as a series. City of Golden Death is designed for 5th level so that might be ok (although I personally wouldnt play it without having played the earlier ones, it wouldnt strictly be necessary).

Probably better to try some of these (they are designed for 5th-6th level):

Carrion Hill - also written for 5th level characters
From Shore to Sea - written for 6th level characters

Both of those were written for the Pathfinder game. It isnt terribly difficult (although would require you husband to do a little more preparatory work) to run modules written for the 3.5 edition of Dungeons and Dragons. Paizo also wrote several of them which are very good:

Carnival of Tears - for 5th level characters
Conquest of Bloodsworn Vale - written for 6th level characters

Those are some of my favorites. There are others around that level (especially if he doesnt mind using those written for 3.5) as well. If I were him, I'd read through the product description, some reviews and any relevant threads in the modules forum to find one which he likes the sound of.

With regard to starting again - I've seen kinds of groups - some start over every six months, others stick to the same characters for years. I think it's very much up to the group. I dont think the beginners' box is old enough to have a "usually" yet. :)

If you're attached to your characters, I'd keep playing them into 6th, 7th, 8th level - they start being able to do cool things there. If you'd rather start from scratch, armed with a little knowledge of how the game works, that would work too.

Awesome, I will definitely look into those. Thanks so much for the really helpful advice!
