Maybe I start donating blood this year... Assuming they will want it in the first place.
Are you suffering from...? No idea, never bothered with checking.
Do you have pressure? No idea, no one measured it since I was kid.
What is your blood type? No idea, hoped you will tell me.
Do you had sex with...? Haven't sex with anyone in ages.
I wonder if they still give you a tin can and chocolate after donation?

I haven't seen a tin can, but most places give you some kind of snack and juice or water. What you get generally depends on who's organizing the drive. Some of the church ones put on a pretty good spread. :)
They'll take your blood pressure and test your iron levels. They'll ask you about a whole bunch of diseases and drugs you've never heard of. It's generally a safe assumption that if you don't recognize it, it's not relevant to you. Some questions about travel. A bunch about sex.
Lately they've passed the laptop to me and had me go through and answer the questions on it, rather than doing it all verbally.

Different continent, different country, different rules.
For a long time blood donors here in Poland received a tablet of chocolate (or multiple tablets), "regenerative meal", and some other things. The exact composition of what blood donor got was and is changing.
Ah. Wasn't thinking. That's that American privilege kicking in again.:)
Usually just assuming we're talking about the US doesn't leave me looking stupid.

I found the questionnaire for blood donors. Starts with the first page warning not to give blood after recent 'risky' behavior listing:
1. Taking illegal drugs in form of injections.
2. Sexual contacts with partners that take illegal drugs in form of injections.
3. Sexual contacts with multiple partners.
4. Sexual contacts for money (prostitution is legal but not regulated in Poland).
5. Sexual contacts with partner met recently.
6. Sexual contact with partners who had positive results for syphilis, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B/C.
No word about homosexual contacts. Yay, despite homophobia being quite common here.
The only actual question regarding sexuality on the questionnaire is asking if your partner had hepatitis in the last 6 months.

With common sue-happy mentality in USA I wouldn't be surprised that they are more afraid of people suing them: "You gave me gay blood?! noo! Wargh! Give me ten zillion dollars because you made me a sinner! My right to be bigot was violated by proving that gays have the same blood as righteous folk! No! It can't be! Waaarrghhh!"
At which point, any moderately-competent lawyer will suggest that the client shut up, sit down, and watch this episode of M*A*S*H.

Those didn't seem to be permanent bans, instead, that was part of warning that there is a period after potential infection during which tests are negative even when infected and thus one should not donate when one of those activities was taken recently. There was no specification about the timeframe, though, implying that you have to consult if you are unsure.

I will have to look that up; but I might be too young to read it at 49.
And CONGRATS to KSF. We're thrilled that you get to finally live your life and not the one society was trying to impose for simplicity. Best wishes going forward too.

Seconded, though I'm mildly surprised that they allow 'KSF' as a name....

Went to court this morning. My name change is now official. It's a good feeling.
Now on to the DMV to get my name and gender marker changed on my license.
This news makes me insanely happy! Wheeeeeeeeeee! :D
Well, OK, reaching insanity is usually just a brisk stroll on most slaadi days, but still. Wheeeeee!
Well, OK, not the waiting at the DMV part, but everything else!

I’m late as usual, but I would like to add my congratulations to the others’, and all the best with next steps at the DMV and beyond.
Wonderfully cute video clip, by the way. Though now I want to watch Blackadder again for the episodes with Flashheart, because that's what popped into my head from Flash-. :)

Or that one episode of Family Guy where it was revealed that homosexuals have acid for blood (ergo, the blood they were given couldn't have *really* been from a homosexual, or they would be dead).

Congratulations!
And seriously, take a camera. The look at the DMV is invariably hilarious
Thanks!
And actually, they were really cool about it, like it was just another thing you get changed on the license. Without missing a beat, he said, "Okay, great. Fill out this form, go get your picture taken over there." Maybe because it's Madison?
When I was at the final window (after check-in, and getting the picture taken), we were going through the form and stuff (I had everything I needed - court order for the name, doctor's letter for the gender, which is what you need in Wisconsin), and the guy asked if I'd changed my social security yet.
I said, "No, I was planning on doing that after getting the new license." He said, "Okay, so a flag's popping up because the records aren't matching up." "You mean like gender?" "Yeah. I can override it. But you can only get one override every 8 years." And I was like, "Well, I'm not planning on changing back!" Which he laughed at.
So, it went really well. Just have to wait for it to arrive in the mail now. Then I can get my SS card taken care of, and I should be all set.

Maybe you ended with clerks that are already experienced with legal gender change?
Possibly. But Madison's also is a very progressive city, for the most part, particularly with regards to LGBT issues. (One of the reasons I made sure to stay here after leaving grad school, so I'd have a good place to transition.)

I wrote a report on Wisconsin in elementary school...
One of my earliest memories was of meeting my very first white male person at my mom's job. His name was Phil and he was from Wisconsin. I remember something being weird about Phil..there is a chance he was the first gay person I knowingly met as well.

Their stores are pretty good, as are the people behind the counter. I used to have a pull list years ago, but had to stop. I went back in a year after I'd stopped my pull list, and one of the clerks/managers remembered me.
I haven't been to the newer one on Willy St. yet, but I still pop into the other one in town from time to time. Good selection of trades, and lots of cool comics/sci-fi sundries.

This could be it.
The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the decisions of Federal Courts in Ohio, Michigan, Tennessee, and Kentucky, meaning that in those states, same-sex marriage bans ARE legal.
So what do ya'll think happens next?
Does the Supreme Court swoop in and take the case this session, guaranteeing us a final resolution by June 2015?
Or do they punt it to next session, thus delaying the inevitable?
When SCOTUS finally does take the case, will they rule for equality in all 50 states, or will the LGBT community suffer the greatest loss of civil rights in a very long time?
It's also possible that challengers can ask the Sixth to reconsider their decision (an en banc court).
Except for that last option, one way or another things will be coming to a head.

I hope they legalize it here in Nebraska. If anything comes up on the ballot, I'll vote for it!
I definitely appreciate the thought, but we're nearing a point where voting may no longer be possible. If the Supreme Court rules the way Anthony Kennedy did on the DOMA case, same-sex marriage will be legal in all 50 states.
If they rule against it, than all those states where judges struck it down, will once more treat the LGBT community as second-class citizens. In that event then yes, unfortunately voting will be necessary for every single state that passed gay marriage bans. In that event, we will lose pretty much everything.

I need to stop reading those articles. Every time they quote a conservative judge or politician, the stuff they say always makes me so angry.

There is an out-there possibility. One author suggested that the Sixth Circuit ruled as they did specifically to force the Supreme Court to do their damn job. The SC has put this off and put this off, and now, because of the Sixth Circuit, they are all-but required to put this to rest once and for all.
I was initially pissed when I read this decision, but after some consideration, I'm downright elated. There's a very good chance that we'll win this. The only downside - and I'm being Machiavellian here - is that if the Supremes grant us equality now, it won't be an issue to galvanize voters in 2016.

Don't quit reading, KSF. I know it's frustrating and aggravating, but we need the world to see our anger and frustration at being treated as second class citizens in order to push this over the top. As frustrating as it is for all of my friends here in Ohio this is a good thing. The Supreme Court needs to rule now before any possible shift in the court's makeup. The one thing that makes Roberts and Alito tolerable is that they will stand behind precedence. So this ruling needs to come while Kennedy and Ginsburg are still on the court.
The time is coming. We just can't sit back passively waiting with patience or we'll wind up waiting another 50 years.

Generic Villain |
I would expect a majority decision in favor of equality for gay marriage. Probably 7-2 given the court membership at the moment.
Considering how SCOTUS ruled on the DOMA case, that's optimistic. Pope Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, and Alito were all pro-discrimination last time. If/when the case comes before them again, I'd be surprised if any of them budged.
