So, according to the rules for the beastrider:

At 1st level, a beast rider forms a bond with a strong, loyal companion that permits him to ride it as a mount. This mount functions as a druid's animal companion, using the beast rider’s level as his effective druid level. The animal chosen as a mount must be large enough to carry the beast rider (Medium or Large for a Small character; Large or Huge for a Medium character)

All fine and well, one would suppose, but on the list of mounts a cavalier can pick at 4th level there is, if I'm not mistaken, not a single one that is large until 7th level, which would mean that the beastrider can neither ride them or at all pick them.

Something is obviously very wrong in the design here. Have there been any official or semiofficial statements on this?

You are stuck with Camel and Horse I guess (till 7th). At 4th you should be able to get: Ape, Snake, (Constrictor), Wolf, Axe Beak, Chameleon, (Giant), Elasmosaurus, Iguanodon, Manta Ray, and Spider, (Giant).

I think the list is a copy paste error (they list the exact same creatures for small riders).

It says you have to wait till 7th for Large otherwise: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/base-classes/cavalier/archetypes/paizo---ca valier-archetypes/beast-rider

"In addition, a 7th-level or higher Medium beast rider can select any creature whose natural size is Large or Huge, provided that creature is normally available as a Medium-sized animal companion at 7th level (like a bear). "

Yes, you are right, I didn't even notice that. But still, most of the animals that can be large at 4th level ar hardly suitable as mounts (like the snake, ape or manta ray.) There is obviously some obvious error, please help marking the above post for faq so hopefully we can get a fix on it. It would be such a nice archetype for an otherwise not very well recieved class, so it really cries for a fix.

Grand Lodge

I do not see the spider on the list. The idea seems cool though.

I know this is a general Pathfinder question, but according to the PFS FAQ:

PFS FAQ says wrote:

As a paladin, your divine bond mount must be at least one size category larger than you starting at 1st level. If you’re a Medium PC, your mount must be Large. If you’re a Small PC, your mount must be at least Medium. You may only select a mount from the listed mounts on page 63 of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook unless another source grants access to additional creature choices. As a cavalier, you may select a mount from those listed on page 33 of the Advanced Player's Guide. No additional mounts are legal in Pathfinder Society Organized Play except when granted from another legal source.

So they specifically call out that the mount must be one size larger for Paladins, but do not say the same for Cavaliers.

They do say that mounts granted from another legal source are legal. Ultimate Combat is considered a legal source except for the Musketeer archetype.

Ultimate Combat states that a medium (Beast Rider) cavalier may have an allosaurus, ankylosaurus, arsinoitherium, aurochs, bison, brachiosaurus, elephant, glyptodon, hippopotamus, lion, mastodon, megaloceros, snapping turtle (giant), tiger, triceratops, or tyrannosaurus ([b]all medium creatures[/b[) as his mount.

So following that, it seems that medium mounts for Beast Rider Cavaliers are implicitly (but not explicitly) allowed. At least for PFS.

Which is probably an oversight.

Dark Archive
