How many Players Worldwide

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Well the Title says it all. I´m curious how many Pathfinder players there are.
Are there any studies about that? I would guess Paizo should have a rough estimate for business purposes right?

Companies in this industry don't share sales data, and Paizo is no exception.

The only thing that's more-or-less circulated is that as far as RPG's go, it's 60-70% USA/Canada and 40-30% R.O.W (well Europe mostly).

Sales data would be inconclusive, as one Core Rulebook can be shared among many players, and the Pathfinder Reference Document is also free.

What Iggwilv says.

yeah, but the OP did not ask for sales data, but rather for number of players. Even without sales figures I suspect there is an estimate of the number of gamers who play pathfinder in a certain area (even if it is only a very rough estimate).

For example, my town has two game stores. Both carry Pathfinder products and order about 5 copies of most products. (they have more core rulebooks and campaign settings). That means that I have at least 10 gamers in my area who visit the store regularly. Assume half of them game regularly (say at least once a month) and their group consists of an average of 4 players (including the gamer who buys the product), that gives me about 20 gamers in my area. Because I know they also but the GM-only stuff, such as the AP's, it's fair to assume that the number of double counts is limited. 20 is a ballpark figure. It could be 30, it could be 10, but it's not going to be 50 or 100, right?

My area doesn't have a lot of Pathfinder players. Tbh, myself and maybe 5 other people where I live know of any groups playing regularly, and we're usually part of it. the local store carries and sells more 4ed because they run D&D encounters nights there. It's good for the store, but I want to play with a group for PF during the summer when I'm home and usually end up playing 3.5, which isn't bad but I don't like the emphasis on multiclassing. That's just me, though.

Yes,I´m not interested in Sales Data altough those would probably lead to a good guess.
Well ,WotC always had a number of about 6 million D&D players floating around, but I think this number is completely arbitrary, it´s also outdated. Still a serious company should have an idea how big the market for their products is.

We do...but we're always looking to expand it. :D

Last time I downloaded pathfinder ID cards to handout at convention games the ID numbers were in the 40,000s. It's probably over 50,000 by now. Though I suspect there are a fair few unused cards around.

Could it be that low?

Silver Crusade

Wouldn't that just count Pathfinder Society? My home game has, well to be honest, I think just me in the PFS. And we have 9 people besides myself who play (rotating in two groups). So if my group is average (doubtful but hopeful) that'd make it 500,000. And I'm sure there's alot of people who don't play PFS but do play Pathfinder.

the number of PFS to PF players I know in my city is low...less than 20% of the PF players are PFS....

Id reckon multiply the number of core books sold by 2 or 3 and that would be number of players. IMO
