I watched Dollhouse thanks to this thread -- had never heard of it before -- and I have to say it was pretty rad! Although having seen Firefly previously, it was an odd experience seeing mild-mannered Wash become psychotic Alpha.

Yeah, the actor recycling from Firefly got weird, between Wash-as-Alpha, Mal-as-Caleb and Zoe-as-Jasmine.

Despite her also being River Tam and Dr. Whateverhernamewas in Dollhouse, I still see Summer Glau as the Terminator from the Sarah Conner Chronicles. :)

Dunno why it's "weird". Whedon may be slightly more overt with it, but tons of directors have actors that they like working with, and do so whenever the opportunity arises.

Heretic. Summer is always River, even when she's not.

Prolly too late but I wish you'd spoilered that. I guess it's been a couple years now, but if you hadn't seen it before then maybe others reading this thread hadn't either, and that is a MASSIVE spoiler.

Gina Torres I was a fan of back in the Xena-Hercules days, before she was ever close to being in a Whdeon thing... when she played Nemesis in Hercules and then she later played Hel in Cleopatra 2525 (which was by the same creators). And Zoe in many ways is Hel in a more sensible outfit (but ironically, with less responsibility), so I got major deja vu there.

(Cleopatra 2525 is AWFUL but in a good way. It's free on Hulu. If you do decide to watch it, all you need to do is stick your fingers in your ears whenever the main character Cleopatra talks, and pretend she's a hallucination Hel and Sarge are having, and it ends up being the best dystopic-future-warrior-chicks-fighting-the-robots-that-turned-against-us show ever.)

I don't think I saw that Terminator, 'cause I had no idea.

Sorry about that. For what it's worth, you don't see his face until the same episode of the reveal; so I've only ruined one episode.

.

Did you see the Firefly reunion?

.

Buffy is the only series I watched from first episode to last.

Firefly
Dollhouse
Angel
....

I don't like Buffy, and I don't care for the Angel episodes that guest-star Buffy. I can't take Sarah Michelle Geller seriously in the role.

I had a tough time deciding between Firefly and Dollhouse because I really like them both, but I had to go with Firefly because I felt that the ending of Dollhouse was wrapped up like it was just to finish the series without a cliffhanger and I thought the way Boyd and Whiskey were handled to give the show a conclusion lacked finesse.

That having been said, I have watched Dollhouse (the entire series) three times on Netflix. I've watched Firefly the series + Serenity at least three times.

I do wish Firefly were longer, but there is something to be said for one- and two-season TV shows. (Mainly that they're short enough to rewatch.)

Yeah, I've re-watched Firefly a bunch of times (more like a bunch of bunches of times!), Dollhouse once or twice, and Buffy just once. I still need to re-watch Angel.

Yes. It was OK. It just gets me aggravated that the greatest TV show in the history of TV isn't likely to come back.

It has yet to rise to that level yet.

It had a brief run then was cancelled. -check
It has a cult following. -check
It seems to remain popular over the years. -check
It has a comeback movie. -check

What it doesn't have yet is follow up movies or a new series(or more) based off the old one. So Star Trek is still greater than Firefly. But maybe give it time... after all JJ Abrams is determined to ruin Star Trek forever.

My opinion is the only right one, in my opinion. I say Firefly is the best, so it is.

When Whedon was at the top of his game, he was brilliant, and I think that Buffy will endure as his high water mark, even though he still has moments of brilliance today.

Buffy however, much more so than his later shows was more willing to go out on a limb, and probably had the best consistent level of writing, possibly because it was exploring themes that Whedon best related to....teenage angst. One of my favorites was the girl who became invisible because she was so ignored by everyone at school, even Buffy herself couldn't really recall her once she was revealed. I especially liked the horrific ending of that episode where you can see that the girl was not unique, and where she and others like her ended up.

It's a saying that writers work best when they write about what they know. It gives grounding to do more risky and innovative work. And while Firefly has merits, Whedon's unfamiliarity with science fiction genres and aesthetics frequently throws a lot of glaring bumps that Firefly only barely weathers, and the characters for the most part don't have the development depth of even the minor members of the Buffy rogue's gallery. I do think that the Serenity is the best execution of the series, perhaps because of the focus the project demanded on delivering a tight storyline and it's character presentation. Serenity gave the series a good exit, a proper closing of the books.

It's not that Firefly is bad stuff, it's actually fairly good as American SF goes, I think it's overrated in quality compared to some really good shows that never got much press like "Nowhere Man", and more subtle shows like "Person of Interest".

Finally saw The Cabin in the Woods last week. It was Whedonlicious.

Blasphemy. You're going to the "special" Hell.

Never cared much for Trek. None of them really ever interested me. TNG was the closest, mostly because Picard and Riker were interesting, but that was it.

So on this we must disagree. Enjoyed Firefly MUCH more than any Trek I've watched.

They've tried reviving Outer Limits.... twice. Sometimes you just can't go back.

The movie proved you can go back and restart a Firefly show.
There are SO many stories that gain a whole new twist when presented in that setting.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

I think a Firefly: The Animated Series is the most likely possiblity for any future shows.

Or possibly DVDs from alternate universes....

Actually to me the movie proved that Firefly works best as short concentrated movie-length storylines.

I don't see why. Compared to any of the female Firely characters, Buffy is considerably more complex, and has a great deal of depth to her. Particularly the trauma of her second resurrection.(where her friends unknowingly snatched her from her earned rest in Heaven) had some great moments of pathos

This puzzles me. I loved both Avengers and Firefly (the two Whedon projects I had the chance to encounter), and I thought both were pretty great. I can understand it if you don't *like* his work, but *hating* it? when there are so much more ample things to hate? In Avengers for example I think every single one of the super heroes was more intresting than they were in thier own respective movies.

Are you sure your "hatred" isn't just a response to how much other people love his work? exeggerated beyond proportion because you feel secluded in your dislike to him?

I'd have to disagree. Any marginal way in which Buffy is more complex is entirely due to the fact that that show had over ten times as many episodes as Firefly.

I actually rank Buffy as one of Whedon's weakest works.

I never saw most of Buffy, but I did see the Buffy musical episode it was pretty funny. She even sings about being yanked out of heaven. Maybe I should track down the whole Buffy series and watch it.

All 7 seasons are on Netflix Watch Instantly.

It's worth the $8/month.

I might finally get around to watching all of Angel this winter....

Buffy. At the risk of sounding blasphemous, I think all the love for Firefly comes more from the lost potential (GREAT set-up for a second season and a larger universe) than how good it was on its own. Good show, but not as OMGWTFBBQ amazing as it's made out to be.

Heh. Reminds me a bit of post season 9(?) Stargate SG-1, where it became "Fargate SG-1".

Left field I'd say.

Oh, and since I never stated my opinion last year -- Firefly. Great cast, loved all the characters. The setting was interesting. As were the people they ran into. The music too was good. Never underestimate the power of a theme song. The other Whedon shows were OK, but didn't rivet me the way Firefly did. For what it's worth, and totally off topic, my other favorite cast in a show: Cowboy Bebop. I even liked the "kid", Ed.

I suggest you check out Outlaw Star, RChance.

Firefly by a huge lead.

Buffy was occasionally entertaining but mostly repetitive. I lost interest in Angel after they killed off Doyle. I didn't like any of Whedon's other shows.

I hope the S.H.I.E.L.D. Show is good, too.

I just hope it lasts long enough for them to grab Colbie Smulders once How I Met Your Mother is done.

Will he ever make another TV show?

I hope not.

S.H.I.E.L.D is not a Whedon show, he mostly co-wrote the pilot. Currently nearly all of his attention is centered on "Avengers 2".

Firefly forever! BROWNCOATS...

Anyway, I liked first seasons of every Whedon show, but it got horrible in the latter ones.

Maybe FOX cancelling Firefly was a good thing, because we are stuck with 14 awesome episodes and a semi-good movie.

Firefly in just 14 episodes has more memorable scenes in it for me than than the 2 full seasons of dollhouse..a show I found somewhat depressing.

I liked Buffy but thought quality was too spotty..a good episode followed by a bad one.

Angel even more so..A good season 1, a better season 2, a crappy season 3,great season 4..I missed the last season for some reason and need to watch it to judge

But Firefly..oh man, the medicene hiest, what an awesome episode

Grand Lodge

Buffy The Vampire Slayer is Whedon at his best. When he did Buffy, he was at this most experimental, and he wasn't as full of himself as he would be later on. Many of his other shows are quite good, but all of them, Angel, Firefly, and his movie work run a fairly distant second to Buffy as they tend to pretty much be stuck on one particular formula that he doesn't vary on.

On the other hand I enjoyed "Serenity" far more than the Firefly series itself. I do believe that it's one off nature and the time passed forced Whedon to approach it differently, and has it turns out, for the better.

Angel.

Angel wins for S5 alone.

I cant even watch Buffy anymore. Especially past S4.

Firefly is alright and I do like Dollhouse especially once they start exploring the other more malign applications of the doll tech.

But Angel for me is the best Whedon show and has the best ending.

Did anyone say TMZ?

Buffy The Vampire Slayer is by far my favorite of his series and one my favorites period.
