Hey bro, any chance we can get the audio?

Grand Lodge

It still sounds like pocket rustling, but I have friend who says he may be able to help.

blackbloodtroll wrote:

This doesn't really sound like a lot of yelling and carrying on either. I would probably give up on the audio.

Curious as to his reaction in the next session blackbloodtroll?

Alsobump.

I wonder what his next character is going to be. Something inside of me hopes he is going to be playing a ratfolk ninja. Considering his last character, it only sounds fitting.

Or perhaps an awakened panda monk?

Grand Lodge

He is now our guest DM, and is getting his incredibly subtle revenge. He is now requiring all obtained magic items to have a backstory. I am actually behind in character wealth, and this is going to gradually weaken my character.

do you like making new characters? because if he's going to take OOG revenge on your character, you can surrender to authorities or kill yourself out of guilt and maybe satisfy him. now if he's angry at you the player? that becomes difficult (one of my friends is still angry that i killed his character when he caused mass panic in the city and jeopardized planar boundaries with a single ability he got in the story and said, "i'll do what I want to get what I want.")

Grand Lodge

Like...the PLAYER has to write the backstory of all his characters gear? o.O

TriOmegaZero wrote:

yes... that too...

i think black blooded troll is implying that he can't for some reason get these items

Grand Lodge

I cannot get the magic items, without a back story for the item, or tying it into my character's history. I am not going into the near impossibility of buying masterwork tools(stealth).

Shadow Lodge

So the only way to get items is to kill enemies with items?

Cute.

Grand Lodge

His monsters are riddled with flavor items, not useful ones.

To confirm, you're saying to even buy things the item needs a backstory?

Next item you buy, you just add a long(5 page+) backstory that is incredibly boring and inane but also sets you up some kind of ally, boon or crazy preparation midway through that you can pull up later when needed just to see the look on his face when it becomes obvious he didn't bother reading it.

Then your next item is crafted, in the words of the NPC you bought it from: "I made it from the corpse of some kind of turtle man that washed up on the shore of the island one day. Was the darnedest thing. He looked so peaceful, like he died in his sleep. Had a big ol' hole in him, though."

Grand Lodge

Yeah, backstory for everything. If you read earlier posts, you would know the guy is an "actor", and with a slew of NPCS to play, he's eating up.

You have a rather large quarry of mineable resources on this forum. Need a name? Pick one out of this virtual hat. Need a backstory? Find a 1e DMG or PF GMG or "4th edition" HackMaster GMG - then use the random tables in the back and in the NPC section. 5-10 minutes per item max and you're set.

As suggested above, bury allies , loyal mini-onions and numerous caches of gear in all of that flavor text. Secret resurrection spots, a secluded clone with a gear cache, a loyal cult devoted to your Gawd(ess)... go nuts with it. Zombpocalypse prepared nuts that is. ^__^

You could get equally cute.

Ahem...

Magical Hat of Disguise:
This uniquely versatile hat came into my possession one warm summer day after a long walk through the woods where I was randomly assailed by an angry looking turtle who yelled incoherently at me with a lisp. After dispatching him, I found only this hat in his possession.

Boots of striding and springing:
This useful pair of speedy boots came into my possession one cold winter night as I was about to hunker down into my warm bedroll near my crackling fire. You can imagine my surprise when an angry figure came catapulting towards me from the darkness. The creature made a prodigious leap over the campfire and landed in front of me, snarling at me with an abundance of slurring speech. As I struck him down with impunity, the firelight highlighted his turtle features. I found only these boots in his possession.

ect... with a smirk.

This sword was forged by the renowned blacksmith, Willem, as a present for his daughter. She got killed in a tragic crocheting accident, so he sold it to me on the cheap.

This set of thieves' tools belonged to Willem the 2nd, who died as he fell through the roof of his father's farmhouse, onto his poor sister, who was crocheting at the time, breaking his neck and impaling her with her own needle.

This bucket of roofing tar belonged to Willem the 3rd, who died when a large bird clawed at his eyes and knocked him from a roof. As he fell, he knocked over his older brother, tearing a hole in the roof, causing his brother to fall in, killing both him and his sister.

This falconer's gauntlet belonged to Willem the 4th. He was never very good at it, so he gave it up after causing a tragic accident involving his three older siblings.

And so on and so forth, weaving together the tale of the blacksmith Willem and his line of poor unfortunates. And somehow all ending with it being caused by his old character. Perhaps because he gave some of your old treasure to some poor guy, causing a horrific and convoluted chain of events.

that sounds like he's imposing his playstyle on the group

but this sounds annoying, would it be a solution to just come up with some silly family lineage that they were all adventurers and had the items you want?. my grandfather this, then my great uncle that, blah blah blah

Post your item list here and we'll fill in the gaps for you

I've never experienced anything like this before. Wow

I've been smurfing this thread for awhile, amused at the drama (like a good soap opera). But I just hit a snag. This idea of providing a backstory for all magic items is unclear to me:

1) You can't have the backstory, "I went to Ye Olde Magick Shoppe and bought this Wand of Magic Missiles"?

2) The notion of developing your character like this is quite neat, I think (in it's own sort of anal way). Your character gets developed as you piece together a nice story of how your character gained his/her possession.

3) Why would this process weaken your character?

Thanks

Man. This is terrible. Maybe the original title of this discussion was more appropriate after all.

My best advice is talk to him privately. Ask him if his action are revenge on what you did or just his choices as a GM. Either way, let him know how much it is ruining your fun, and thus the game. Apologize for killing the PC if it revenge, and ask him to stop taking it out on the game and instead find some compromise.

What he is doing seems fun on paper, but ends up being a jerk move that only saps fun from the game. Let us hope he isn't being a jerk for the sake of being a jerk.

Grand Lodge

Here is the list:
Amulet of Mighty Fists 5,000 gp (+1),
Breastplate, Mithral 4200 gp
Fetish of Natural Armor (+1) 1,500 gp
Ring of Protection (+1) 2,000 gp
Ring of the Beast 8,000 gp

Eventually, I hope to obtain all these.
With every one already having +1 Weapons, and me struggling to get some Mwk tools, I am slowly falling behind. I talked to him privately, and he said I was a power gamer, and he did not want any WOW-like characters. I have no stats below 10 and have never power gamed. I simply like the numbers to match the character concept.I can backstory every magic item, but time constraints make it very hard. I have never dealt with a "thespian" DM.
If anyone has any advice, I would love to hear it.

Grand Lodge

Oh, as a side note, our usual DM allowed the Magic Item Compendium, but now it is banned.

wow... I don't know if it would work. i'm sorry. this dude obviously is angry about his character dying or has had a chip on his shoulder about you for a while.

first off, you can ask your other characters to help you get your items.

2nd, you can tell him that if it is a personal beef, y'all can work it out. you killed him after a long talk with other people who thought you would be okay with it. you can ask him what would make it better

3rd, if he really thinks your a powergamer, then either your other characters aren't very effective, or, again, your GM has it out for you. one of the ways I have dealt with it, is talking to the GM about how the challenges and your character interact. a powergamer would have bonuses way above normal level.

lastly, you can take a break from the game until he cools down

If he said outright that you're a power gamer, he's being an arse. That's a nasty accusation. That he would make it so casually is a problem that needs to be addressed.

That being said, I don't see much wrong with the backstory rule. It's a bit heavy-handed, but he doesn't appear to be targeting you in particular--if I hear this right, you're just the only one in the group who isn't making backstories.

Grand Lodge

Yeah, I have learned that if you kill a fellow player, don't let him be the guest DM. I figure if I can play within his rules, I will have the support to keep him from being a jerk. Until then, I will need a crap load of random histories for to getevery single magic item I want.

Ring of the Beast Backstory

this ring once adorned the companion of a young elven princess. this small girl kept many animals, but this was the marking she put on her favorite Wolf, Kinsly. She bought him from a cruel carnival and tamed him from a savage beast into a loving Guardian. she gave the ring as a token of her love and devotion to the animal. then, tragedy struck her line. A drow raid at night took the lives of most of her family, and her retainers fought to keep her safe. but as the drow neared her room in the tower, the wolf grabbed her and ran. as they jumped off of the 50ft high balcony, it seemed like the wolf grew. miraculously surviving the fall, the wolf took off with the young princess dying from exhaustion and wounds as it got to the next village. having nothing but what she had on her, the princess was forced to sell the ring, not knowing the noble spirit of her animal left some of his essence behind making it magic

i'll do as many histories as you'd like :) i enjoy creating these short little stories

EDIT: writing the ring of protection story now

I suggest you base each item's backstory on one of its former owners, and how they lost the item.
To bounce around some ideas....
Amulet of Mighty Fists 5,000 gp (+1): Perhaps owned by an ogre bandit, or a halfling monk of Asmodeus. Perhaps both.
Breastplate, Mithral 4200 gp: Forged by an enslaved fire giant for an orc shaman.
Fetish of Natural Armor (+1) 1,500 gp: Created by the same orc shaman, powered by the blood of forsaken children or some similarly sinister source.
Ring of Protection (+1) 2,000 gp: Spent several years in the possession of a goblin who had no idea of its power. The goblin eventually lost the ring when he threw it at a river rat.
Ring of the Beast 8,000 gp: If I wasn't too lazy to look up what this was, I'd have an awesome idea here. You'll just have to take my word for it. ;P

Grand Lodge

Thank you very much. Without a starting point, my back story writing is rather terrible.

STOP KILLING ALL THESE PLAYERS

This is actually the first character I have ever slain, and I took a long time considering the pros and cons of this action.

Heck, this might be fun.

The Mithril Breastplate:
Technically, this ain't magic, but whatever.
Orluk the fire giant thought he and the rest of his warband would make short work of the emaciated orc approaching them. Instead, his entire warband was slaughtered, and he was hit with a Dominate Person spell. Next thing he knew, he'd given the orc his services as a craftsman--for free! Orluk managed to escape, but not before the breastplate was completed.
The orc shaman took his prize, and proceeded to take control of a major orc tribe. Eventually, though, one of his concubines cut his throat, stole the armor (and several other valuable items) and left. She made it to the civilized world, where she quickly pawned off the stolen goods, bought an enchanted falchion and became a mercenary.

I might write some more later.

Ring of protection

This ring has a perverted sense of love imbued in its heart. this was a wedding ring from a noble lad that he lay on his commoner love. a sweet story of forbidden love, as his family forbade it eventually, the head of his family, the grandfather, disowned him, and renounced his inheritance. Disgraced, he left the town with his love hoping to have a lovely life. but he was not a strong man, nor particularly adept with his fists, and any money they were able to acquire soon was out of their possession. but his love had a different vision of the future. she sold her ring and was ripped off, and this was the last straw. she torched the shopkeeper's home while he lay in bed and walked into his shop to get her ring back. and evil glint now in her eyes, she was the protector of her once noble patron. somehow she was able to kill hardened soldiers with ease, and with her newfound power, they had an idea to get his family's wealth. together the returned in the night and slaughtered his whole family and took control over all the possessions. no one dared to question him as he claimed his family's name and it's prestige as all who did died. they lived happily ever after.

a robber robbed the tomb they were buried in many many years after they died so this came into circulation

blackbloodtroll wrote:

nah man, i understand....

Amulet of Mighty Fists:
This item was the center of a long feud, between a halfling monk of Asmodeus and an ogre bandit. Repeatedly, they would come into conflict. Almost every time they fought, the amulet would switch owners.
Finally, the halfling managed to catch the ogre in an ambush, and the amulet became his for good. Or at least until the ogre's mother showed up at his door and ate him. As he was not wearing his amulet at the time, it was offered up at auction--the auctioneers not knowing what it was--and a canny pawn broker managed to purchase it for a pittance.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Ring of Protection:
Stolen off its maker mere hours after its creation, this ring spent the majority of its life in the possession of a goblin who only valued it for being shiny. It was rarely worn properly, instead hanging from some twine around the creature's scrawny little neck. And it would likely still be there, had a particularly nimble river rat not frustrated the hungry goblin to a certain point.
The ring found itself flung at the beast, as nothing else was at hand. The throw went wild, and the ring landed on the other side of the river. But the goblin, not realizing this, assumed it had lost its prize to the the river. Believing its shiny to be lost, the goblin departed.
The ring was later found by an old fisherman, who sold it to a traveling adventurer.

Is he permanently the GM or just for a little while? You are calling him a guest GM, but every guest GM I have had doesn't change how the game is played or what house rules are in place. How long do you need play with him as a GM?

Can you talk to your regular GM about it? I know if a guest GM for my games made such changes I would be less then happy about it.

This is sounding more and more like revenge.

Until you don't have to play with this guy, we will help out with those back stories.

Grand Lodge

He is scheduled to DM for at least a month, but with the umm, two "unwise"(I know that's harsh) players, he is somewhat popular.

Liberty's Edge

The ultimate question is: is he requiring ALL players to come up with these back stories, or just you? Are you playing the same character, or is this something completely different? If the same, is he making you write background stories for items you already have?

Are you sure you aren't being a bit paranoid? I mean, he seems to be imposing this rule on everyone. Perhaps it's just a poorly thought-out house rule, and nothing more.

Grand Lodge

Actually, he has somewhat lax with other players, dropping items randomly that benefits them specifically. He claims he randomly rolls, but there is a subtle favor to other characters. I told other players, but they assumed I was paranoid.

"They said I was PARANOID! THEY SAID I WAS CRAZY! WELL, WHO'S CRAZY NOW?! WHO'S CRAZY NOW, [problem player's dead character]?!"
;P
But yeah, that does seem a bit suspicious. Just drop whatever you've got, and we'll produce a backstory.

What are some of the "flavor items" that have come your way. I greatly enjoy such items and I do not think I have a problem with giving you some ideas of how to get some atypical use out of them.

As for the Amulet of Mighty Fists: You have got to have had a trainer at some point. Just decide that a messenger showed up to deliver the amulet from your old master. he is now retiring from his martial time and will instead study at a pacifist temple and focus solely on the ways of the mind. He is therefore presenting you with the amulet with the wish that you shall keep his martial way alive in the world (gives you amulet, a temple retreat, and a scholar ally).

I assumed as such. but whatever, if it becomes worse, you can take a hiatus from that game. but if you can enjoy it...

sadly you're going to have to learn to have fun with him trying to negate you, if what i assume is going to happen

+1 to this idea,

But I'd go one step further (why not? .."in for a penny, in for a pound"..)

Include a link to the annoying turtle bloke in every back-story; This amulet was made with a hope and a prayer that it would eventually find it's way to a champion who would rid the town of it's turtle overlord...

if you make each back-story more fantastic than the last you will be on to a winner.

This ring was given to a sweetheart who had boldly confronted a [turtle bully etc] only to be stabbed in the back by a coward ..

These bracer's belonged to visionary driven mad by [Turtle guy's] inane mumbling...

Seriously, Kobold Cleavers stuff is pretty good; the only other suggestion I'd make is blatantly ripping off fairy stories , movies and pop culture and using them in the explanations.
Have your clothes made by Rumplestilskin,
Your armour by the Seven Dwarves etc...

bit of a bummer that the dude you 'removed' now get's to GM you - good luck.

yeah, why did your usual GM let him GM? that's just kinda... seems fishy to me
