Dang it, man. I can never get past the first few days, let alone half the week!

On another note, nicely done.

Another one nicely done Ruloc. Can't wait to see what you have in store for Lizrabel.

Alright, may as well give it a go - if you feel it should go on your secondary list, feel free. This is a little long, though.

Spoiler:
Lady-Captain Jesebelle Morek is not as... physically imposing as some of her peers. Barely five feet tall and looking young for her age, it is easy to mistake her as being the captain's daughter or someone who just started on juvenat a little too early in life. Regardless, she has found her appearance often makes others underestimate her and she is quite happy to take advantage of it. Long brown hair falls to about mid-waist and she normally leaves this loose unless going into a situation where it may get in the way. Her brown eyes show a steely will, one at odds with her small frame. Perhaps the main reason that few mistake her for a child is thanks to puberty still letting her develop a woman's curves - even if it did skimp a fair bit in the height department. One curious physical trait - one that's been cropping up in the Morek family for Emperor-knows how long - is her slightly elongated eye teeth. While they could be described as fangs, they are nowhere near long or sharp enough to help in such a fashion and are not long enough to hamper her speech at all (her grandfather had been just on the other end of that line and had undergone extensive speech therapy to stop the tooth-induced speech impediment - he only kept the teeth because they worked so well for intimidating people).

Clothing-wise she normally wears a white ruffled shirt under a black, naval-style waistcoat with gold trim, dark leather breeches and thigh-high boots (which are not high-heels - the preconception that all women in command positions spend all day wearing footwear like that really annoys her) and a heavy greatcoat of dark cloth that resembles the ones commonly worn by the Commissars of the Imperial Guard, though with the Morek family crest emblazoned on the shoulders and right breast. She usually wears the coat simply draped over he shoulders like a cloak, and has had a gold chain fitted to the collar to help facilitate this.
***********************************************************************
The waistcoat's style is sort-of 18th-century in style, BTW.

Ideally I'd want the image to be of her sitting confidently on the command throne of her ship. Almost a Slouch of Villany; leaning back, legs crossed, head resting on a fist with a slightly-evil smile on her face as she watches her plans come to fruition. Possibly with her white-feathered grapplehawk perched on the back of the throne (a grapplehawk is a cyborg hawk with anti-grav systems and powerful claws for picking people up, electrocuting them and dropping them somewhere - normally used by bounty hunters but I'll be having a field-day with the little guy if we're ever fighting someone near a cliff). Feel free to use something else, if you want though.

Weapon-wise she has two - one is a power sword styled after a cavalry sabre (there'd be a small wire-like bit running up one side of the blade to help generate the power field) with the hilt decorated to look like rose vines are wound around it's length. The other is a laspistol with Renaissance-looking filigree (those flowing designs you sometimes see on armour from back then - some screenshots of Ezio from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood should show you what I mean) done in gold on the sides while the top-sights are both covered in a solid-gold layer, but with minuscule prayers of accuracy engraved on them (the prayers are too small to be visible unless it's a close-up of the gun, incidentally).

The Exchange

I like this one. The bird is nice and the eyes are very interesting to look at. Great job, once again, Ruloc.

By the way, I saw you Meirisel and the werebat drawing on Deviantart. Hilarious.

Liberty's Edge

Amazing, as always! The eyes on Liz and the sideways glance of the "owl" are very intense. Fantastic! I am really excited to see your take on Borrias tomorrow. My player is still in the dark on this, so I'm really excited to get his reaction once I give the portrait to him.

I couldn't get the forum to open so I'll just post here and cross my fingers.

Name: Arcadia Akuma Knight

This character is a human Monk of The Four Winds. She is already lvl 20 and so has chosen to mimic the Oni spirit. Thus she has soot black skin and white hair braided back into cornrows. Her primary element that she uses with her elemental fist is fire, and second is lightning.

Due to her mimicry of the Oni spirit she is lawful evil. She agreed to serve out a contract with a devil force at odds with a demon horde. But she was caught in a trap that effectively reversed every aspect of her alignment to chaotic good and due to the radical shift also sealed her memory away. Her skin turned back to it's original olive and her hair to black. She now walks the land searching for answers, knowing only that she is immortal due to her ability to reincarnate 24 hours after any death and slowly relearning her former abilities as a monk. Sometimes when fighting demons or devils her memory returns to her along with her former cold battle prowess and appearance.

Her attire changes quite often with the only reoccurring idem being an adamantine katana. Most recently she has been wearing light clothing as she traverses a desert to deliver this black katana to a queen of the desert.

As for the drawing I would love to see her both as her bubbly kind-hearted chaotic good self, but also the surfacing of her cold-focused killing machine that she is slowly remembering.

I wanted to throw another character on to the list, feel free to put me on the secondary list, since I've already had one. Nicos looked so good I had it professionally printed to use as the cover of the binder I use for that game, and now my other character binder is jealous :)

Finneas Sawyer:
Fin is a 17 year old Spellslinger Wizard. Adventurous and mischievous from a young age, he had accidentally traveled much of the Inner Sea region by the time he was 10, after which he continually ran away from home to do it all again. He carries many souvenirs from his travels, including a Haramaki given to him by the queen of Absolom (he's really bad at lying), and an Adoran great coat given to him by Talmandor (really really bad at lying). He's just under 6 feet tall, blond hair, blue eyes, with boyish good looks. His face is round, no facial hair (he doesn't even need to shave regularly), with a constant grin on in face even in the worst situations. His bonded gun is a rifle of his own design, lever action (similar to This). The inspiration for the character was mostly Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, so basing him off the way those two are typically portrayed is a pretty close match.

Wow, the pendant (and the whole character) looks fantastic!

I saw it, and you know sometimes you go into these with low expectations, the guy is good but he won't get it right. Then I beamed a giant smile and burst out laughing!

Perfect! Love it! Such sad eyes. So hurt and wounded. That is the look of barely surviving when the rest of his party died. What drove him to Lamashtu and turned him into a hard man, ending his youth.
Mmm, fine detail on the Lamashtu symbol.

Thanks Frank, you have made my Friday a lot happier.

OK, after some nagging by my DM...(you know who you are...) I am going to submit one of my characters...Lady Lureene Ourson .

Here is a description of her:

Looks:
Age 19 (apparent) Female Human/Alu-Demon [her mother is a demoness] Summoner/Wizard , STR 12, DEX 15, CON 15, INT 16, WIS 14, CHA 22; 5'4", 114 lbs. Long wavy blonde hair with streaks of brown and grey in it, usually pinned up, sometimes worn down her shoulders. Pale creamy skin, dark blue-black eyes with long sooty black eyelashes. Finely honed cheekbones and facial features. Full, pouty lips. Lightly shaded, Golden smooth leathery bat wings. Sometimes disguised as feathery angel wings. Smells of exotic perfumes, and spices cinnamon linger over her body. Speaks with an exotic accent. Perfectly manicured feet support long, luxurious but firm looking legs which end in perfectly rounded hips below a waist just the right size for holdin' which resides just below the most perky yet balanced set of? and resting on those creamy soft shoulders and swan-like neck is the face of an absolute angel? Wait, back up, were those... WINGS?!

Hey Ruloc, your work is looking great. Can you tell me a bit about your technique? I've been working on some digital illustration myself and am trying to get the hang of it, but I always like to hear about how others go about doing their work.

Here's an example of one of my digital pieces. I did it on Corel Painter 12 with a Wacom tablet.

This is Potts the gnome sorcerer, a character belonging to one of my current players.

Potts

Here's a couple of other examples. I did these two a little different. I drew them by hand first, inked them, scanned them and then coloured them with Painter. I find that technique a bit easier for me than trying to draw them entirely digitally, but I'd like to get better and faster at working entirely digitally.

For those of you who have played or run the Savage Tide campaign these two might look familiar.

Long Shanks LeShiv

Liberty's Edge

Thank you Hugo!

Glad you like him 3.5 Loyalist. It was real fun and I can't help to see him as a Rincewind. :)

Okay, I wanted to record my painting session this morning... Can someone suggest something better than Camstudio? It keeps on crashing on me and that begins to really get on my nerves. -_-

@P.H. Dungeon: There's a lot to explain, let me see if I get the video running. The first thing you should drop is the Crosshatching. That's a guarantee to make your Drawings appear flat.

I'll give that suggestion a go. The first one was intended to be colour from the get go, and I added some crosshatching in near the end for some reason. The second two were not really intended to be done in colour, they were black and white drawings that I thought I'd try to colour after the fact, so the cross-hatching wasn't going anywhere with those two.

I'm more of a drawer than a painter, so I've got some practise to do to learn to work in a more painterly style. If you do get a video up I'd like to see it. Otherwise, I was mainly curious about what software you used, whether you sketched things out first or just started laying out colour etc..

You do have a good grasp of Anatomy and that's a great start. Of course I also started out drawing, so I know the problem. It's a quite different way of approach. In drawing you define everything by lines while via Painting you have to start thinking Volume all of the time.

I tried to explain a bit with the Layers I had left in Photoshop here Careful my english sucks. ;P

Tried PainterX some time ago, thought it was quite cool. But I always used Photoshop and didn't had the time to get deeper into Painter.

There are a lot of great tutorials on youtube. :)

That was really cool to watch. I'll have to watch it a few more times. Thanks so much.

A couple of quick questions:

How many layers did you end up with in total? My expertise with layers is not nearly as advanced as yours (it's very basic). I only usually end up with a few.

How did you decide on the pose/composition for the figure? Did you do a few little thumbnail sketches first or did you just visualize it in your head and start putting it down right away?

Liberty's Edge

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I try to collapse them as soon as I'm satisfied with an certain progress. Especially for my Dailys. The more Layers you accumulate the harder it can get to do corrections later on. I think I use about 3 to four Layers for the painting and up to 10 Layers with lighting, color correction and similar. But when I started I had up to 100 Layers. ^^° It was a MESS!
But I know of some artists who do have all armor, cloth, skin... on separate layers so they can adjust the Lighting for each fabric. There's no right way to do this.

As for the pose, well basically I use the technique I mentioned at the start of the clip as Thumbnail. I do have a rough image in mind, start with the head and continue to block in the body until i'm satisfied with the pose.

And before I forget it and since I already done it...Potts

The Exchange

That guys eyebrows are awesome.

The final product looks good. I wouldn't mind a copy of that file if possible to send to my player. I posted the link to him. Our first session of the campaign with this character is this Sunday. His reply was upon seeing the picture was:

"Great now I have two pictures of him, so he's for sure going to die in the first encounter."

I started doing a dwarf monk, trying to work more in a painterly style. It was before I watched the video you made, and now that I've watched it a couple of times I'm tempted to start again, but I've got quite a bit done, so I'll probably try to finish it. I'll post it when it's done- hopefully tonight or tomorrow.

Last two questions:

#1: How long did it take you to do Potts?

#2: What type of tablet do you use (I assume you use a tablet)? I currently have a wacom 12x that I just bought about two weeks ago and am still getting used to. I like it, but I don't quite have the colour on calibrated to match my monitor colour, so I need to work on adjusting that. It's a bit frustrating working and seeing the colour appear one way on your monitor and another way on the tablet.

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

#1 took me roughly one and a half hours. #2 I use an Wacom Intuos4L. Can't afford a fancy cinteq. :)

Aaand here's a little something for Timothy. Hope it's okay if I took a small liberty there. ;)

Heh, probably should have mentioned that she's a redeemed succubus (i.e. Chaotic Good) with only the golden bat wings and no tail, horns, or hooves, etc. (i.e. Lureene looks like a human girl with golden bat wings). A guy might get the wrong idea about her otherwise. ;)

Ruloc:
FWIW, Lureene is the retainer and Lady in Waiting to a character I myself commissioned: the half-elven princess Alis Kirmoon. Figured that might give you a better notion of her social status, etc. :)

Also I uploaded a anonymised bigger Version to my Deviant Art Gallery.

Ruloc, I attempted to follow some of your advice. This is the dwarf monk of our party- he's currently only 1st level, so he doesn't really have any gear as of yet. I think he turned out fairly well, though I'm not overly happy with the head. I was pleased with the rendering of the arms and chest though. I think he could probably use some body hair, but I'm not really sure the best technique to add that in. This took me a little longer than how quickly you work though- probably about 5-6 hours. I didn't do any outline sketching for this one.

Ruloc!!! You kick so much @$$!!!! This is amazing!!! I can't say thank you enough. I was going to wait until Christmas to give copies of these to my players, but I can't wait that long! I don't have a lot of cash, but rest assured, you will find some funds in your tip jar on deviant art (sometime after the weekend, since I'm out of town and viewing this on my phone). I just have to try to figure out the German Paypal site :)

Seriously amazing! I can't think of another way to put it. I recommend that everyone throw a tip at Ruloc (if you're able), if you are as happy with the outcome of your portrait as I am!!!

Thanks again!

Hey P.H. Dungeon, thats pretty awesome for your first time drawing.

His head looks a little forward, move it to the left a little. Pants look great, nice sash. That right eye looks a little squinty.

Well, thats it for my critique.

Ruloc, your style really grabs my attention. There's such an awesome flow between the sharpness you depict in some scenes and the blur featured at the edges or in your speed painting.

But flattery aside, I am hopeful that you wouldn't mind depicting one of my characters at some point.

I have two characters that I'd love to see drawn; if you have time, please pick whichever you'd like.

Llyndzvar is a tall half elven antipaladin. His ears reflect his elven heritage more than his human, however. He is roughly six feet tall and leanly muscled, perhaps even sickly. He wears his long blond hair tied back loosely, with a mask that covers his eyes only. This mask is horned and silver in colour, perhaps with red or black. I'd like to see your interpretation. He wears spiked spaulders in crimson leather. The rest of his armour is similarly done. He is arrogant and boastful, and as such his armour reveals his midsection. If a weapon is shown, it is a massive tetsubo, essentially a long handled spiked club. On side notes, he smirks constantly, has a very straight, long nose and his skin is fairly pale. Here is a very fail reference: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/809/llyndy.png/

Lethendralis is somewhat of an opposite. She is a somewhat lightly toned drow woman. Her skin is more ashy than midnight black. She is a few inches over five feet, and rather small for a fighter. She wields either two axes or two heavily curved long swords. Or a mix. Her shoulder plates are round and nearly skull shaped, and she wears an iron breastplate, with midriff exposed and a heavy armored skirt. Her eyes are bagged, and her lips are richly coloured. Her hair is very pale blue and she has violet eyes. Generally she holds a neutral or slightly puzzled expression. A reference is here: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/696/lethendralis.png/

Thank you for your time :D

I think that's a pretty good start. To get faster you only need experience. Just keep at it and try to squeeze in some time each day. It really helps a lot.

What I would add to Tirq's suggestions. Try to use a more blueish background. The Character has a lot of earthy tones and it will help get him to the foreground. You should then try to add some blue to his Shadows too.

@Timothy: I'm so glad you like it. Wasn't sure if you would have preferred each Character in an single illustration. But I figured you wouldn't have to wait as long for your secondarys and I can on the other hand shorten that list drastically in one go. :)
Also: Did you check recently? I thought I changed my Tip Jar to the english version of paypal? If that's not working right for you or others it would be good to know.

I have enough character I want drawn...well actually two....but I already have two (Aleashia and Romula) and another one that is second from the top on the secondary list.

So when do you think it would be all right for me to submit another character?

And do you take commissions? If so how much?

Ruloc, I'd like a drawing of one of my favorite characters, Sir Bronwyn.

I've been using Chris Hemsworth/Thor references for him, since he's a muscular man with straw-blond hair and blue eyes. He has a Lemmy beard, wears a breastplate with his coat-of-arms (a gryphon on a red field, a single star above it) and red cape. The most important part is his expression. He's a carefree man who enjoys hard work and the simple joys of life despite his knight status, and is always seen with a tankard filled with ale. Maybe have a pose where he's holding a tankard with his right hand and his left resting on the hilt of his sheated sword.

Also, do you take paid commissions? I have been DMing a campaign for quite a while and my group would really like to have a drawing of their characters, and your style seems like a perfect fit.

IZAM! What the...?!

I believe the exact noise I made when I saw this was "SQUEEEEEE!"

Just amazing work Ruloc. I've always had a hard time figuring out what goblin art style would look good on him(he was originality from 3rd edition Fearun), but I think the Pathfinder treatment looks excellent! Keep up the awesome art!

I like how he's burning the GM guide.

Ruloc, your tip jar is in English now. I originally checked a while back. You should see something in there from me sometime over the next day or so.

Thanks again for the awesome portrait!

Wow, IZAM will get a lot of love and deserves it. That is brilliant.

Thanks Odytoboman! Have to admit that he wasn't as easy as I expected, especially trying to put an expression in that wide head of the Pathfinder Gobos.

The burning was Odytobomans idea. :) I just thought the burning of the gamemastery guide instead of the core rulebook was an obvious choice. :)

Also if you guys are interested it put up an time lapse video on youtube.

Pathfinder Goblins make me think of Max from Sam and Max ever since one of my players pointed out the similarities in their grins.

Cool video. It's pretty amazing to see an artist work at hyperspeed.

Ruloc, I must ask, what song do you have playing in the video?

...cause I love it and want to download it!

That's "The Humours Of The King Of Ballyhooley" by Patrick Street. Found it on the Youtube Audio Library and just had to add it. :)

That was amazingly cool to watch, and I too like the song : ). Thanks for posting it up.

I'm very unhappy with the Quality though. I did this with Snagid, works fine, but has an build in compression that seems to be unchangeable. Probably possible in Camtasia but I won't pay almost 300 bucks for this gimmick.
I tried Camstudio multiple times and always the file crashes when it's important. The Test-Recordings all worked fine. Maybe two hours is too much work for Camstudio. :(

Well anyways here's Gudea

Tried an slightly different approach by starting very early with an high contrast. Not sure if I like it.
