Can I use non-Core spells for prerequisites?

RPG Superstar™ 2012 General Discussion

Silver Crusade Star Voter Season 6

As the title: Can I use a spell from a Paizo-published book other than the Core Rulebook as a prerequisite for an item? For example, a spell from Ultimate Magic?

I apologize if this is answered somewhere else already, but I couldn't find any reference.

Thank you

Yes. If it's in the PRD (and Ultimate Magic is now), then it's fair game.

You may use material from the Pathfinder RPG (including the Bestiary, Advanced Player's Guide, and so on) and any of Paizo's Pathfinder products. All other books (including the 3.5 SRD) are off limits (unless you're specifically directed otherwise in later rounds). Use of other content is grounds for disqualification.

If we do use non-core spells, feats, etc how should the exact formating go. For example if I use this formating will I be correct or potential dinged:

Construction
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, absorbing touch (Advanced Player’s Guide 200); Cost ZZ gp

Or should the book and page reference be in the item description section? Or is it both and if so do you need the page number for each time you need to make the book reference?

Any help would be much appreciated

The answer to that question is: Can you find any item in any of the allowed books that give the book name and page number for a spell prerequisite?

If yes: Do what they do.

If no: Don't do it either. Just do what they do.

Hope it helps.

You never want to give a page number as it is not guaranteed to be the same across all editions of the book, nor will it be the same in all translations.

I've had a look around and can't find a magic item that uses a non-core spell as part of the construction requirements. The closest thing I've found that matches up with my question is the Muleback Chords which has the following within the description text:

"his carrying capacity (see Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook page 171)."

Given the deadline I'm thinking its probably safer to stick to core spells for requirements.

It's not a matter of 'safe'. Like it's already been stated, non-core spells are perfectly acceptable. Your question seems to come from being under the impression, though, that you need to provide page citations when citing those non-core spells. You don't. The way to cite a non-core spell is the same as the way to cite a core spell- italicize it, period. An item that used magic missile and gravity bow would be formatted as follows:

Construction
Requirements
Craft Wondrous Item, gravity bow, magic missile; Cost zz gp.

Make sure if you use a non-core spell, it's in the PRD.

I'm pretty sure that's not an actual requirement - anything from an official Paizo product is allowed. OTOH, both judges and audience may have trouble understanding your item if they don't have the crucial reference at their fingertips. If you can compensate for that difficulty, go for it.

Just to further nitpick that: anything from an official Paizo Pathfinder product is allowed. Pre-Pathfinder 3.5 stuff would not be. (Apologies; I know that's likely what you meant, just felt it was worth clarifying for those who might not be aware.)
