I always loved caultrops, but hardly got the chance to use them so far. But with a Stalwart Defender concept I am pondering it could be used more often. After all he often stands around not moving waiting for the enemy to come to him. Now if he sprinkles the surrounding area with caltrops he can make approching him even more unpleasant. And his DR protects him from the damage even if he moves.
But recollecting them all is a bit tedious.
How would you go about making magical caltrops? Enchant them like amunition? I'd love a bag full of +1 returning caltrops. 2 damage if you step on them and after use they hop back into the bag.
Or would you rather make a magical bag that creates temporary caltrops (like a decanter creates water).
If I can get to high levels with more money, +1 wounding, bleeding, returning caltrops and the defender specializing on trip, it could be very dangerous for living enemies :D
Also would making the caltrops from adamantine help penetrating the pesky AC bonus of shoes?

how about something like weaponstrings?
long cord, fixed on each caltrop, run trough a bag, running trough a little hole at the bottom of the bag.
You throw them out, by opening the bag and making a motion like emptying a bucket. When you're done, you pull at the string that come out of the little hole at the bottom of the bag and wheel them into the bag.
no magic.
"returning" isn't really what you are looking for, as that means, you throw them and they come right back at ya.

As Ike suggested I would make them as wondrous items.
Back in the Bag Caltrops: This bag of caltrops fills an area of 10x15 feet. Upon command the caltrops are thrown out of the bag and spread out in front of the user placing the area within 5ft of himself and orienting it as desired. As a standard action the user may activate the bag which calls back all the caltrops.
Moderate transmutation; CL 7th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, telekinesis, Cost: 5000
The cost probably should be much more based upon the creation rules but caltrops are not that great in my mind so I cut the cost. Your DM might disagree.

Bag of neverending caltrops sounds like a pretty nifty item :D
Also thanks for the example item :3
I'd add Minor Creation as spell too, but otherwise I'd use this ^^

A very interesting idea. But I doubt it would be very practical to use. the strings would constantly get entangled.
I sense evil GM grin. Player tests his new returning caltrops and at the end of the round is a caltropine. ^^

...Or would you rather make a magical bag that creates temporary caltrops (like a decanter creates water)...
This +1
But I'd limit it to like 5 times a day or some such.
Otherwise I can see players standing on top of a tower holding the bag upside down to bury the contryside in caltrops.

Axl wrote:This is not a "Rules" question. The thread should be moved to "Suggestions/House rules/Home brew".Interesting I got the impression the OP was asking how to make them using the rules..... YMMV
Yes. I was mainly asking if somebody had any idea if the rules mention caltrops somewhere as being like ammunition or something.
That does not seem to be the case and so input what would come closest to the rules was offered. So the most preferred version so far seems to be a magic bag so far and not magic caltrops. that sound good too.
Thank you for your help :3

How about a restricted version of "Unseen Servant" that has hard-coded instructions to pick up all the caltrops and return them to the bag ?
Price it based on how many times per day the spell can be cast.
Minor wondrous item: Bag for Caltrops
This sturdy leather reinforced canvas bag will hold up to 20 pounds of caltrops, enough to cover 10 five foot squares. If caltrops are lost for any reason, they may be replaced but will not be retrieved as below until they have been in the bag for at least 8 hours so the bag recognises them as belonging to it. Items other than caltrops may be placed in the bag but will not be recognized or retrieved.
N times per day, as a standard action, the bag may be held open and commanded to retrieve. Any caltrops that were dispensed from the bag within the previous day and are currently within 25 feet of the bag move toward the bag as if carried by an Unseen Servant. Anything that would prevent a regular Unseen Servant from retrieving a caltrop (such as the caltrops being underwater or held by a force greater than 20 pounds) prevents that caltrop from being retrieved. Since Unseen Servant has a base speed of 15, if all caltrops being retrieved are within 15 feet, retrieval is completed during the standard action used to activate the bag. Otherwise, it takes a full round to complete.
Continuous Spell (Unseen Servant) Spell level x caster level x 2,000 gp
Charges per day: divide by ( 5 / Charges per day)
1/day = 400 gp
2/day = 800 gp
3/day = 1200 gp
If you want to get fancier, you could combine with a minor bag of holding to make it weigh less (multipy cost by 1.5), but I'd be carefull how many caltrops you allow to be retrieved in a limited time.

If you are devising a wondrous item, why not one that cast Spike Stones a couple time/day?
Cost. Spike Stones, as a 4th level druid spell, would have a minimum caster level of 7, making it
4th level spell x 7th level caster x 1800 (command word) divided by
( 5 / uses per day) = 10K for one use per day.
You would get WAY more area out if it, though. At cl7, that's 7 20x20 squares of effect.
