Shout out to Pathfinder as the 'old-school' D&D experience from Penny Arcade

Check it out.

Pretty funny!

Penny Arcade

Good to see, as Penny Arcade up till now had been a massive 4e marketing tool...

That's pretty funny for being PA.

I was happy to see Pathfinder show up in Penny Arcade yesterday, but I must disagree with the sentiment a bit. 1st edition AD&D is where you get Floods, Plagues, and Pillars of Salt.
.

.

Real events:
"I've been wanting to play a Paladin sometime."
"Yeah, me too, but I can never roll high enough to qualify."

"How did your character die?"
"Assassinated himself by accident."
"Bummer, unlucky rolls will do it every time."

"I thought you built a Magic User?"
"I did, but after I saved up enough money to get a familiar, it killed me."

Dark Archive

Loved the shout out, but coming from the guys who did all the 4e actual play podcasts, it seems a little ironic. Didn't stop me from sharing it with my friends.

Scarab Sages

Thanks for the link, I thought it was hilarious. I'm hoping they run more than 1 and make it a story arc. They're stuff may be hit and miss, but when it hits, I think it's great!

Shadow Lodge

Yeah, we've been talking about this.

If players afraid for their lives gives you a warm glowing warming glow, you might have a look at Kenzerco's Hackmaster Basic, which - although its own, quite entertaining system - owes a great deal to Red Box D&D and AD&D 1st Edition. You, uh, can't quite assassinate yourself, but there's plenty of white-knuckle tension in combat. ;)

That said - I wish PA hadn't chosen language that makes me unable to tape that strip to the front of my PF GM screen, or it'd be up there right next to "Despite the fact that my armor & weapons are in desperate need of repair..." Well, you know the rest.
