Throwing shield as a magic weapon?

Rules Questions

I was trying to make a Captain America-type character. Can I give a throwing shield magic weapon enhancements separately from the armor enhancement? Or would there be a problem between total armor enhanement vs. total weapon enhancement?

You can, but they only affect when you use shield bash, not when you throw them.

I had a player do this before. It is as squawk said not legal in RAW, but if your GM is open to it you could just houserule it. That's what I did.

Shields can be enchanted separately as weapons and armour.

Quote:

Shields: Shield enhancement bonuses stack with armor enhancement bonuses. Shield enhancement bonuses do not act as attack or damage bonuses when the shield is used in a shield bash. The bashing special ability, however, does grant a +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls (see the special ability Description).

A shield could be built that also acted as a magic weapon, but the cost of the enhancement bonus on attack rolls would need to be added into the cost of the shield and its enhancement bonus to AC.

As with armor, special abilities built into the shield add to the market value in the form of additions to the bonus of the shield, although they do not improve AC. A shield cannot have an effective bonus (enhancement plus special ability bonus equivalents) higher than +10. A shield with a special ability must also have at least a +1 enhancement bonus.

So a +1 Returning shield would cost 8,000gp. If you wanted a +1 AC bonus as well, that would be and extra 1,000gp. These enhancements are completely separate and are capped at a +10 total bonus for each.

What you can't do is add weapon enhancements as armour enhancements, or vice versa. If you want to make your shield Returning, you have to add it to the weapon side, (and have at least a +1 weapon enhancement.) Likewise if you want to make your shield Arrow Catching, you have to add it to the armour side.

I'm not sure where anyone would get the idea that weapon enhancements on a shield only add to shield bash. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the question.

+1 to Quantum Steve. Having run a Captain Andoran character for about a year, i know he is correct in how this operates. The price for enchanting is done separately for the Throwing Shield as either a weapon or a shield, with the enhancement caps being independent of each other, but set the same as others of their type (+10 for weapon, +10 for shield). Investing all your GP into one item is costly, especially if it gets Sundered.

Thanks for the idea. <EG>
