Seal speaking?

Jade Regent

Sovereign Court

Greetings

Since we know the seal has a Kami in it giving it some sort of intelligence I was wondering if it would mess up anything later in the campaign by having it become effective a tertiary character in the game by having its own personalty and speaking when opened up in the warding box as per an intelligent item.

I'm a bit worried as it feels like that there's some more planned there and I don't want to be running head first against the campaign itself.

My thoughts for the personalty (for those interested ) are basically that of an old man who's tired of all this, not happy with how long it took to rescue him, recalling old times when he'd speak up and so forth.

Any thoughts on the matter ?

Well, obviously, I don't know what happens in the later volumes. So no help there. However, I do know there is already an item in the second adventure that pretty closely fits the personality you are describing. It is also an item that the party is more likely to take adventuring with them, and thus will get more screen time and interaction. I'd imagine most people aren't opening the warding box except when absolutely necessary, to avoid unwanted attention.

Not that you can't have two grumpy old magic items in a campaign. I'm having flashes of Statler and Waldorf just thinking about it. But I'd at least check out the other item I'm talking about before making a decision.

Dark Archive

The seal seems mostly silent (because its mostly in a box, for good reason).

Also: would you count Helgarval as an intelligent item?

Ok, I've read the module, I know the plot, and I still for some reason thought this was referring to a talking, furry, swims in the sea and eats fish type seal.

Now I may have to put one in.

My idea for when they open the box was to have their astral-selves teleported to an endless plain where bare-chested peasants work countless rice fields, singing a harvest song in perfect unison (with the distant lilting of samisen-plucking as accompaniement), the cherry blossoms are forever in bloom and as quickly perishing and in the distance looms an impossibly high mountain, capped with snow.

In the sky, the clouds are a darkish greenish-gray, promising rain. As the PCs watch, the clouds undulate, resolving into a vast, coiling, serpentine wyrm that fills the horizon. As the wyrm turns to them, they see one of it's impossibly large eyes light up, blazing with a celestial fire brighter than the sun. The void of the other, missing eye is filled with nameless stars.

Which of course is the Seal of the Amatatsu family about to begin speaking with them.
