Printing scenarios at Staples

Has anyone suddenly not been able to print their scenarios to a print service like Staples? I usually print them locally, but started printing my maps etc at Staples to get nice glossy colour laser prints. I just tried to print a whole scenario at Staples so I could have it in colour and bound, and it gets rejected. I was able to print the Guide this way, and all the file protections seem the same as for the scenarios... any ideas?

You might want to ask the Staples folks if they've made any recent changes to their software. I don't think that there are any hard protections in the PDF's but it might be reacting to the watermarking.

It might be getting rejected from a setting on the PDF that a staff member will have to Override. If they give you a hard time about published works and copywrite, they can look up paizo's policy in their national database, which should satisfy them.

I've had the same issue at Kinkos. They explained to me that it's not new but rather the [SECURED] on the .pdfs is what their software is keyed to recognize & refuse to print.

When I questioned it, they showed me that the character sheets for example, which say 'free to copy for personal use, etc' are not secured & there's no legal problems for them to provide copies.

But the scenarios don't say 'photocopy for personal use'. I never noticed till they had to literally point it out to me. So anyway, they apparently have to protect themselves from liability in case someone runs off 100s of copies and sells them for personal gain or such.

So I guess we're stuck with buying a printer of our own, or running them off at work *shhh*

I showed them Paizo's print policy on their website on their own computer. I also have it ready to display on my iphone for quick reference. That has satisfied 3 different kinkos in my area.

Color me intrigued. Where can I find this "print me at kinkos" link?

I ran into this issue with RPGA modules in the past. At that point, I was a regional director for the RPGA and had business cards for the position (I purchased, not provided). The business card was good enough for the people at Kinko's.

Can I print my PDF, or have it professionally printed?

You may print one copy of any Paizo PDF for personal use. Note that this only applies to products that list Paizo Publishing as the copyright holder—other publishers may have different policies; you'll need to contact them directly.

Lamplighter, I know locally that I've had good luck at the UPS Stores and Staples. Actually, Staples was nice enough to give me free binding on a few of my PFS mods that I needed for GenCon... >.>

Clearly you're just in a less trusting end of town :D

Kinko's didn't let me print out a copy of The Jester's Fraud. I think they're a bit too cautious.

TBH.. I don't use Kinkos or Staples for modules, I just go to library and pay the cost through the printer. Yeah it's not pretty color, but I'm not printing the module just to have pretty color. And I asked a Kinko's rep what was with that for printing modules, and the Watermark, does put a hard mark on the PDF which becomes a red flag to printing companies against copyrights, so they have to deny it. Now at my Kinko's they require you to sign a waiver saying that it's okay to make a copy of it and they request a copy of Paizo's copyright usage policy.

At the end of the day, I just have to invest in HP ink cartridges. Anyone know where I can get a bunch for cheap?

Now character sheets and copies of the PFS Organized Play Guide? I do go to Kinkos for that. All the freaking time!

For a Brother inkjet printer, I've had good luck with these folks: http://www.inksell.com/

The Staples in town here in VT happily prints PFS scenarios for me when i need them.

Odd - I can upload the full PDF and have it printed, but can't use the print driver to selectively print just the scenario without the ad material at the end. Probably if I went in and talekd to them it would be easier, but that requires not prepping at 2AM. :)

I had my copy of "Song of the Sea Withch" bound for tomorrow night's game... looks great!

A slightly different take on this is the cost. I just went to Staples last Thursday to print a large order to support a convention I was organizing. Between the pregens, chronicles, reporting sheets, back up printed scenarios, etc. it would have run somwhere in the range of 500-600 pages. They wanted $0.59 per color page!!! Are you kidding me?!? Is that really a competitive price?

Yet another reason why I print con scenarios, support and reward sheets in black and white.

Any other place that I know of will charge you more. So yes, it's competititive. Printing color is 4 passes of toner as opposed to just one.

My local Staples is great, the color images printed there are better than my color printer. This is especially important for the paper minis I print off.

I print off faction missions, in color, on my color printer, and I've noticed it eats quite a bit of ink, and ink cartridges aren't cheap.

So I used to think it was a rip-off, but it's actually ok for what you get. The only problem is the service charge, so it's probably better to print a bunch of stuff at once.

My printer takes a combo pack black/color at $67, add paper and I print at roughly 17.5 cents per page. Of course, that does not consider my time, but I'm sure it doesn't cost a pro printer $0.18 per page even with better paper and overhead. Especially considering they get toner, paper, supplies at bulk prices.

Yeah my local fedex/kinkos refuses to print them or even to go to the website to look where it says I have permission to print a copy of a pdf by paizo publishing. They just keep repeating they need written permission from the copyright holder (which what company is gonna take time for every small request like this)

Have you printed the FAQ authorizing printing of PDFs and shown it to them, or do they want specific authorization for the individual person and file?

I can't print the FAQ. I do not have a working printer which is why I was having fedex/kinkos print the character sheet for me (not the original that has the photocopy ok on the bottom)

Can you have FedEx/Kinkos print the FAQ? And then show it to them?

This idea really amuses me actually. But of course it won't matter if what they want is official letterhead and specific permissions spelled out to you and your specific files.

Having them print it would charge me automatically before it even gets approved which they probably wouldn't print it either as the website also has a copyright on the bottom.

I really don't understand how this company works. It's nothing like any Kinkos I have ever visited.

In a past life I was a dept manager for staples copy, a store manager at office depot, and I current own a non-retail print company.

Here's the info I can offer.

Some store employees are insane anal about copyright stuff, usually because they got in trouble in the past. If they refuse to print your document then ask them for a copyright release form. They will have one to give you. This form will have a place for the "publisher" sign. Print the web address of the paizo print policy and sign it.

If this isn't good enough or if they don't have the form ask for the store manager. If someone shows up and their name tag doesn't say "store manager" (ie, it says dept manager, or asst store manager) ask them if they are the manager on duty, and if they can make a customer service decision.

Explain the situation nicely. I want to print this, I am authorized.

99% of the time you can get what you want printed under these conditions. If someone was just really poorly trained, or they are being a complete toolbag you can ask for the number to their DM (they probably wont give it to you but if they are really dumb and do give it to you then you struck gold. That person will give away the farm to get a customer off the phone.) or the closest store, if you ask for the closest store then also ask who the manager of that store is. (This may embarrass them into doing their jobs)

Alternatively you can find another shop to print at. Someone will do you printing.

When you find a place that will do your printing, ask the associate for their card. All of the national chain print centers give their associates cards. Ask them when they are usually around. Make a habit out of working with that person. They will hook you up. Once someone knows your job specs they will prioritize it. They may also do stuff like run the maps in color and charge for b+w, or run it on 24lb instead of 20, or they may only ring you for 20 copies instead of 23. (None of that is a promise, but it happens everywhere for regulars)

Don't pay more than $.35 for a color print or $.10 for black and white. All of the national chains have price matching, and every week someone is running a sale at that rate. Mention it. They will price match.

If you are able to plan ahead, use an online printing service. You can get color prints less than $.15 that way.

Just in case anyone is curious. Print shops don't buy supplies at all. They lease the printers for $200-$600 a month depending on the machine. And then they pay the lease company "per click" which means basically per image. So an 11x17 costs them the same as a 8.5x11 to print. I won't tell you my exact rates, but I will say that I pay less than $.07 per color click, and less than $.008 for a b+w click. That doesn't include paper, which for a nice 24lb 8.5x11 is about $.005

Alternatively, if you need like 10,000 copies of something, you can PM me.
