Y'know, for a quick cash-in, they could always release a 4th Bestiary, with all of the monsters from the APs that weren't published in an Bestiaries yet.

They can easily make a compendium with 300+ monsters just by using the monsters in APs.

Eh, they'd lose fans very quickly if it was nothing but reprints. Some people had issues with Bestiary 3 because they reprinted the monsters from the free Bonus Bestary. I'd rather they just add those monsters into the Bestiary, along with new monsters and updates from the Tome of Horrors.

That's why I like Paizo. They don't do little "cash-ins" hardcover money sponges unless it's item compendiums, since that's something many people actually asked for. And even then, we got new items and tables.

Cool idea for a monster, though the name is pretty close to the Forlorren, the half fiend, half-fey creature from Tome of Horrors and in Besitary 2.

Dude, it was like 10 monsters out of 300+ (roughly 3% of the book) from a FREE booklet. Complaints about something THAT minor are rather ridiculous.

Furthermore, not everyone can or wants to purchase the APs, as appealing as they might be. The monsters featured in these could be useful to any DM though, so why not make a Bestiary with every monster described in APs but not yet published in an "official" Bestiary called Bestiary 4: Adventure Path Monster Compendium?

Beside, copying and pasting the info from the APs into a bestiary isn't long and hard, and it's not time-consuming compared to creating monsters from scratch. It would be an easy book to sell.

Actually, it's in that book too. You've got the Forlorn and the Forlorren, and it too is a half-fiend/half-fey creature.

I like the idea of the Grey Hags, so you have my vote as well.

I like the idea of cupians/cherubs and there oposites with the poisonous breasts.

If they make new types of hags maybe we will get new hag traits for the changeling.

That would be kinda cheap, and than this entire wishtopic would be for nothing.

Beside, copying and pasting the info from the APs into a bestiary isn't long and hard, and it's not time-consuming compared to creating monsters from scratch. It would be an easy book to sell.

The main problems with that I see are:

Bestiaries have even LESS room than AP's for monster description, so there would be little reason for anyone who has a large number of AP's to buy it. Since it would be basically a set of stats with incredibly reduced fluff

Bestiaries are also suppose to be world neutral. While most AP monsters do fit that description, some don't.

Paizo also seems to have a strategy with their Bestiaries. Bestiary 1 was mostly SRD and other basic monsters needed to run most games. Bestiary 2 filled out the alignment spectrum and fleshed out some of the monster types and added Paizo replacements for non SRD monsters. Bestiary 3 fleshed out monsters appropriate for Asian influenced campaign settings (To go along with the Tian material that came out for Jade Regent) and fleshed out the less well known outsiders. I would guess that Bestiary 4, whenever it comes out, will flesh out some elements missing currently in the game, whether that is science fiction themed creatures, planar creatures, Mythic beasts, or niches I can't even think of right now I have no clue.

Personally, I would hate to see a book of nothing but reprints with less fluff and maybe a few pieces of errata. I wouldn't mind 50% or so of the bestiary stuff to be reprinted (especially the 3.5 stuff still in need of update), but would rather see new material alongside reprints.

They already added some AP monsters in Bestiaries 2 and 3, I just thought that instead of some adding a few in Bestiary 4 that they should just make a huge compendium with every monster from the APs into one single book.

That topic would still be useful. If the number's problematic, then they should just make the Adventure Paths Monster Compendium, separate from the official books, much like the Inner Seas Bestiary.

Like I said above a separate Compendium would be nice to get, and if you say that most AP monsters are world neutral, then they wouldn't need that much fluff either.

I hope bestiary 4's theme will be: Less known monsters from worlds mythologies, folklore, fantasy stories and books and cryptids.

But I kinda like a mixture of everything, i'm not a big fan of a book with 90% outsiders, robots, fey or plants, I rather see a very good mixture. I also think the asian monsters weren't too overwhelming in bestiary 3.

Sincubus wrote:

I agree, they just didn't have the balls to design the Tanuki more traditionally.

Asian monsters got pretty much ignored in the previous two bestiaries (Naga, oGre mage and Rakshasa being a few), that's why they were used more in bestiary 3 and because it made sense with Jade's Regent AP.

I think asian mythologies monsters aren't too different from european, african and american mythology, you just need to cut the truly azian-looking stuff (Like those hats and some names) from the monsters if you don't have asia in your world and make them more fitting into a campaign, creatures like Oni and Rakshasa prove that it is possible to have asian monsters mixed with greek mythology and that it makes perfect sense.

Also only the name of Raiju and Bakekujira are asian for example if they got their english names like Thunderbeast and Ghost Whale nobody would even notice they are from asia.

The only truly asian-looking creatures in bestiary 3 were Tanuki, the Kami and the Asian Reaper.

Kappa may be a Japanesse symbol, the creatures appearance doesn't scream I"M FROM ASIA! to me.

Anyway the point of this off-topic story is that I heard somebody say that Asian monsters will not appear in bestiary 4 because they were used so much in bestiary 3... I think that would be a shame, I think there can still be 10 japanese monsters in bestiary 4, especially because the coolest asian creatures (Bakekujira, Gashadokuro, Rokurokubi, Raiju, Kijimuna, Jimenju Tree, Kapre and Nogitsune) from the Jade's Regent AP's aren't in a bestiary yet, and there are many asian creatures yet to be paizonized:

My asian monster wishlist:
- Akaname/Filth Licker
- Batibat (The fat and vengefull tree nymphs)
- Evil Kitsune 9-tailed fox creature (maybe named Kumiho)
- Harionna (the female nymph with hooked animated hair)
- Heikegani (Crabman samurai monsters)
- Hyakume (Eyeball monsters)
- Kamaitachi/Sickle Weasel (very fast weasel monsters that cut open all they see with their sickle claws)
- Namazu (Giant catfish monsters that create earthquakes)
- Nekomata (Demon cats with double tails that bring bad luck and mischief)
- Omukade (Marilith-like creatures with centipede features instead of snake)
- Jubokko/Vampire Tree (Red leaf trees that feed on blood)
- Tsuchigumo (MOnstrous earth based trapdoor spiders)

I know many people hate asian monsters like I dislike robots, I would be interested to hear from one such person why they hate asian monsters so much? Is that possible?

I bet at least some Asian mythology inspired monsters show up in Bestiary 4. Maybe Bestiary 4 will flesh out creatures from NA legend. Would make sense if we ever get to visit Arcadia.

Just got reintroduced to another creature that needs to come back, thanks to an old AD&D adventure, and it wasn't in the Revised book that had their brethren. The Storoper. A smaller, stone-bodied, slightly weaker version of the roper that's found specifically in the underdark.

EDIT: Strange, maybe it's just the module having a varied version of the creature, but the converted creature doesn't have immunity to electricity, resistance to cold, or -4 saves vs. fire. It's also missing Strength damage.

I want to add the Stone Troll do the suggestion list. Trolls with DR and elemental resistances that can throw two rocks at a time? Yes please.

Liberty's Edge

This:

Forum Troll (CR ∞)

While most adventurers, subscribers, lurkers and posters tend to be mature, helpful individuals, the Forum Troll is not. Living on a diet of Mountain Dew, Cat Pictures, and the frustration of others, the Forum Troll lives to incite rage.

Forum Troll CR ∞
XP 0 (But you feel a lot better)
CE haunt
Notice Perception DC 25 (to realize you have already UNLEASHED THE FURY)
hp Eleventy Billion;
Effect This haunt triggers Incite Rage as the Savage Skald (DC 40 Will Save Negates) against any creatures that enter its thread. In some instances (Failed save by 10 or more)creatures effected must "/rage quit" or, if they fail a Reflex Save (DC 30) BECOME a Forum Troll. They lose all other abilities, and become a haunt. Should a Player Character become a Forum Troll, all you can do is weep for them.
Destruction A Moderator spell cast in the area temporarily drives out the original haunt, and all converted haunts revert to normal.

What I would love to see are the stat blocks for Gray Dragons. They're mentioned so often, but what are they like?

Important! Do NOT! try to use fire against him! Flames only make him stronger.

Isn't that like 100% what the Mountain Troll is about?

Considering they don't have anything of what I just listed, no.

I would like some new types of trolls like stone, a magical inclined/gifted one, an air/wind based one would also be cool. Maybe some with multiple arms or the ability of severed body parts to still attack after being cut off like they did in 2nd ed. A "fire" troll would nice as well as one that is electrical based, a sound/sonic based one, and even one from/based on the plane of shadows. Also a CR20 one from the first world would be awesome and also one good aligned species just to be different then the standard troll mentality.

I kinda like Moss, Jotund, Rock, Trollhound and Normal Trolls.
More trolls than i'll ever need, I think it would be kinda too much if they add a troll of every single element, makes the whole troll-point kinda useless. (in my opinion)

A troll that can maybe be used to replace Antaeus is an Earth Troll (or something with another name to keep the elemental-name creatures lower), a half troll half earth elemental creature that regenerates like crazy as long it is in contact with the earth, it is also very different from Rock Trolls.

More unique hags would be lovely, and i'm not talking about Sand Hag, Desert Hag, Fire Hag, but more about Stygira/Annis hags which are unique and not just hags with a different terrain/element/Colour before the name hag.

I also think its strange that Hag isn't listed in the creatures stats? Most creatures have such group names but Hags don't. If they do that in the future I would like the Qallupallik, Stygira and Pukwudgie both in the Hag group, they suit in very good. Maybe even Harpy to make them different from Siren and most of all the D&D Harpies.

Well... I am realitively new to Pathfinder but I am surprised to see what ISN'T in the existing beastiaries so far:

Beholder
========
I loved throwing one in with some Hell Hounds and maybe an ogre or two at players. I really miss seeing Beholders.

Giant Rat
=========
No, not the Rat, not the Dire Rat, the Giant Rat. Almost every TSR AD&D module for character levels 1-3 had these in there somewhere. Call me nostalgic but I would like to see these in Pathfinder.

Mule
====
Of all the creatures that are missing, this one is by farthe most important one that needs to be included in Pathfinder. Players can buy them, use the Handle Animal skill to combat train them so they don't run off with all your camping gear (or simply pay 12 gp for one that is already combat trained) yet not have the important stats, like how many hp does a mule have? What is its AC? You get the idea. For now I am using the stats out of the Monster Manual (v3.5) but, again, it really should be ina Beastiary.

I'm not gonna get greddy, so those are the three that I would like to see added to Pathfinder.

Game on!

This is owned by WotC. Same as the mind flayers. This is why you don't see either one even in the 3.5 SRD.

hierogrammates: celestial scribes

Mules the most important missing creatures? Yeah right lol :p

Stats for a mule would be more useful then yet another demon or devil.

I would like to see a giant rat that is medium to large size.

I do miss beholders a little but I don't miss most the other creatures we can't use particularly the mindflayer.

I think its very easy to use stats of Pony's or Horses for Mules, they are pretty much the same creatures. Or do you want a picture of the mule in the bestiary?

And you are in for a lovely pathfinder time the next AP and months, cuz its gonna be Demons ALL over. And I love it. :)

Mules could be good for Animal Compagnion 2 maybe?

Dragon78 wrote:

You can use it, just not publish it.

Yes I know that Yora but I don't miss them enough to go to the work to convert them and I like the pathfinder spin a lot of the old school creatures have gotten that could be used.

Strangly the D&D classic creatures that I really miss aren't Mind Flayer or Beholder, they are Carrion Crawler and Umber Hulk, they were always part of my favorites.

I don't understand why classics like Aboleth and Rust monsters were given away but Carrion crawlers were kept?

Yeah, I love those two! I think I'll brew them up right now.

I also liked the carrion crawler and the umber hulk. They could still use the carrion moth though.

I miss the umber hulk as well.

This might be a idea already repeated in the thread, but a cool idea for a couple of new monsters might be to turn the other gorgon sisters into races of monster.

Not sure fluff/mechanics wise what to do with them, since Euryale and Stheno don't show up as important parts of the greek myth, but I am sure someone here could come up with good ideas.

They're in the Tome of Horrors. They're listed as True Gorgons. One's CR 22 and the other is CR 20. I've linked one which links to the other.

Ultimate Equipment states to just use the stats of a pony for a donkey/mule.

Still, that was 10 monster spots that could have been used for new monsters and templates, instead of reprinting monsters you can get on a free PDF download. Either way, I feel making an AP bestiary would be good for the soft cover line, but not the hardcover rules line. And even then, I'd like something new in there. Maybe other monsters that can fit in the AP theme, like more monsters that can fit in Skull and Shackles.

Since I wished all I could wish for in this thread (really any mythogical/cryptid and old D&D monster appears somewhere in this thread)
here is a (almost) complete list of previous bestiary monsters from Pathfinder from favorite to least favorite.
+ all good creatures I like and a list of normal animals to complete the lists so this can be used as legenda, as I see many people wish for creatures/animals that are already somewhere in a bestiary.

My hint with this post is that I hope the pathfinder staff creates much more creatures from my favorite lists and much less from my least favorite list haha (just kiddn) :p
Just continue creating monsters like you already did, as many of them are awesome and really usefull, while in my opinion some are really just clones of others.

Anyway here are the lists.

My Personal Favorites:

These are my all-time favorite monsters from pathfinder products, I hope to see much more monsters being added here in an eventual Bestiary 4 and in AP bestiaries.
This list goes as far as the last Shattered Star part.
I didn't bought the Winter Ap's yet, but I guess some of those monsters like Domovoy, Mirror Men and Dawn Pipers all end up in my favorite list.

My all time favorite monsters from all Products is by far the Alraune, hope to see much more creatures like that being added in bestiary 4!!

Neutral:

These creatures are nice and I use them from time to time, but they aren't my favorites and in many cases this is because the artwork or fluff bothers me.
Given some other artwork/fluff (or artwork at all) can change my opinion about them, and they can end up in my favorite lists given the right fluff or artwork.

I wouldn't mind seeing much more like these creatures, and many are really needed for good stories/adventures.

* = With other artwork (or in some cases with artwork as they lack it) it could be my favorite and it would score higher.

Far from Favorites:

Many of these creatures have look-a-likes somewhere higher in the list of favorites, I think of many of these as clones.
Some also share special powers and behavior with other creatures I like more than these.
Like I rather use mobats than Dire Bats and I rather use Water Orms than Elasmosaurus , same goes to Nabasu which I find a Gargoyle with the behavior/powers of a Barghest.

Seeing much more of these monsters wouldn't be my wish, but some are just needed and off course others like them too, but they aren't my taste.

Disliked Creatures:

I wouldn't mind seeing the list of bestiary 4 dislikes being much shorter :)

- Mostly I really don't like half-stuff like Half-Orcs, Half-Elves, Tieflings, Dhampirs, Aasimars and such crossbreeding stuff.
- I also really dislike the rainbow dragons, rather see some unique dragons like Jabberwock, Zomok and Gorynych.
- 2 Linnorms would be enough for me, Fjord Linnorm and Tarn Linnorm are the only ones I use because I think linnorms should be rare, and all these environment/element named linnorms are too much for me.
- The Clay Golem is 100% replaced by Terra-Cotta's.
- I dislike nothing more than Hobgoblins and Rasts. (and I think its silly that Rasts are used but Ravids and Arrowhawks get the boot)
- I'm not a big fan of the Oni used in Bestiary 3, I do like the Tengu Oni, Kitsune Oni, Ogre Mage and Ettin Oni.
- Creatures like most Aeons and the Axiomite are too choatic in looks and behavior/powers, I first have to understand them before I use/like them.

Good Creatures:

These are all the good friendly/allied creatures that I like and use much. Hope to see more of these.

Some of this list are neutrals, but I think they would be better off with the goodguys.

Animals from the Real World:

These are all the animals pathfinder books used.
Many animals can be created if you just use a model for another like use a model of the Pony to create a mule.

Normal animals are rarely in my wishlists so I wouldn't care less if they are added or not, I like the Animal Archive book very much and I think animals should get more of those books.

I see many people wish for animals that already are in pathfinder, may this list help you.

One animal I would like to see added is the Leopard Seal.

Comprehensive list, but I completely disagree about disliking tieflings, axiomites, elder things, proteans, inevitables, golems ... Clay golem is the first ever golem of Prague, terra-cottas are something else.

We clearly need Skeleton Jelly.

I only dislike one Protean (probably because of its artwork), Keketars on the other hand are one of my ultimate favorite creatures of pathfinder.

I don't understand Axiomites, and I generally don't like creatures that can have any humanoid form (without being shapeshifters), too chaotic for me personally. I do understand that Axiomites are one of the top 10 creatures of this forum as everybody talks about them positively, i'm not one of the fans tho.

I never liked Tieflings and others such products of crossbreeding between races because I think in that way you can create everything very cheaply, you just take a human and minotaur and you have a humantaur and a medusa and a human create mehumans ect ect, I think they make good playable races such as dwarves and elves, but in monster language I don't like them.
I'm sure to play one in the upcomming free MMO game Neverwinter tho :p

Even tho you may be right about Clay Golems I still don't like them, never liked them actually and with the Terra-Cotta (which is also made from clay stuff) I really find them non-usable anymore.

Elder Things, right, probably because i'm not really into lovecraft, I do like some creations of him tho, I love Nightgaunts and Gugs to death.

Inevitables are not my jacket, I do like most of them a little bit but the CR 20 version is too chaotic (in looks) for me personally.
And while most people like and love big, strong, powerful, high CR, chaotic looking masterpieces with many special powers, i'm not one of those people.

I don't think a Inevitable can ever become part of my favorites even if it has a very cool picture or look, because I don't really like their soul purpose (hunter-of-broken-laws) that much. I didn't like them in D&D and I don't really like them in Pathfinder, the Marut is the only one I sometimes like to use as it hunts liches.

For me the description of a monster is what matters, bad artwork is easily replaceable. Axiomites in the Great Beyond and Shattered Star look like elves, and it's a bad idea to perpetuate the image that elves are superior, perfect. There's enough outsiders that look elvish.

I'm not a fan of crossbreeding too, I like other origins for the tieflings, fiendish pacts, lower planes ''mutations'' etc. When they first appeared I played the inevitables as agents of fate, karma, but the Pathfinder take is interesting as well.

I do like Tieflings as playable race, but like dwarves, humans and Elves I think they shouldn't be in monster manuals and bestiaries.

Drow and Duergar are enemies for me, not playable races so I like those in the bestiary.

I like some discriptions too and sometimes a very good description is enough, but I don't buy miniatures (too expansive) and I like my own printables better then the Bestiary boxes cuz in the bestiary boxes the gargantuan and colossol don't get love and in some cases they leave out monsters from those manuals. (such as winter wolves and bombardier beetles)

So every monster I like (and which has good artwork) I work with Photoshop to give them black backgrounds which looks beautiful on them, then I print them on strong photopaper so I have all monsters I want.
That's why artwork is important for me personally so I can use the monster, without artwork I can't do anything with it. And sometimes a monster doesn't appeal to me because it has strange (and for me ugly) artwork, I never liked the Gug, until I saw some pathfinder artwork of it in an late AP where it wants to eat a Ghast/Ghoul of leng, very stunning artwork and I like the creature better now cuz I can picture it better on the battlefields I create, same with Bythos Aeon and Nyogoth.

In some cases (like vouivre) the creature is so ugly on its artwork (my own opinion) that I don't use it at all, I still wait for better artwork, with better artwork, Vouivre would be among my favorites.

So my biggest wish of a AP monster still missing from a Bestiary is VOUIVRE, in my own opinion I would cut the wings from the creature, and it really needs another artwork.

I think the vouivres, more like it is in mythology, should be related to carbuncles. Except their crystals would be valuable, and used to lure adventurers.

It's still only 10 monster spots. Also, those 10 monsters were revised D&D versions, so that would have been ridiculous to leave them in a free booklet that not many people might care about it. Soft cover books, be free or not, don't get that much publicity than the hard cover books. Making a AP Bestiary not part of the hard cover books would make it niche and rather obscure, like the Inner Seas Bestiary. What would be wrong at getting a Bestiary which is a compendium of monsters found in APs? Yes, they are mostly exclusive to AP settings, but DMs can easily change that. Beside, what's wrong at showing people what kind of creatures are featured in the APs anyway?

I see an AP Bestiary in the same way we've gotten the Fiend Folio in 3.5: it's a themed book that is a spin-off from the regular Bestiaries.

@Sincubus
You have way too much time on your hands man XD

We have these. They're called wyverns or drakes in Bestiary 3. If you take the wings off of them, they're the drakes out of 3.5. Maybe they called it a vouivre in The Twice-Damned Prince to take the environmental aspect out of it.

I also liked the carrion crawler and the umber hulk. They could still use the carrion moth though.

The Midgard Bestiary (for Pathfinder) has the Death Butterfly Swarm. They might work for you.

Lol I see you aren't familiar with the Vouivre (Castlevania Amphisbaena style) from one of the Adventure Path bestiaries.

They look like dragons with a woman growing out of their tail, it uses the woman to lure prey into the water and then catches them with its dragon body.

Its much like the Amphisbaena from Castlevania games, except it has wings.

I know Vouivre is french wyvern, but I kinda like the idea behind the castlevania/pathfinder one as wel, as we already have wyverns so vouivre can be used for something else.

What are 40 minutes in a human life? :S :P

If we do get the Vouivre in the Bestiary 4 I hope we get better art for it.

You would need a hardcover book to get all the monsters from APs, Modules, and other sofcover books that haven't found there way into the past 3 bestiaries.

You want a Vouivre?

Just take the wyvern entry from Bestiary 1 and change the Languages from "Draconic" to "French".

I suppose you could, even if the Vouivre in the AP is half woman, half dragon and looks nothing like a wyvern *shrug*
