True, but it wouldn't be out of place to see more racial weapons and race-exclusive class archetypes so that you could give your character extra flavor. What I like the most about the races is when I get to pick a racial weapon without the need of a proficiency feat to do so. A section for new Dwarven weapons, for instance, for the Dwarf entry is still logically coherent.

I would like to have more emphasis on all the new races presented in the bestiaries (Ifrit, Slyph, Oread, Undine, Aasimar, Tiefling, Dhampir and so forth).

I think racial weapons are pretty much where they need to be. New weapons for the sake of new weapons grates on my nerves. "This sword looks like a longsword, but it's got a different crossguard, so we added a small bonus, changed the weight and cost and gave it an exotic name. Also, it's an exotic racial weapon! Yay!"

I'd rather this book was kept trim. ONLY material pertaining to racial stats, generic fluff, racial options (like in the APG), and maybe some feats and traits. No spells, no items, no weapons, none of that.

Someone mentioned planetouched templates: +1. Golarion is human-centric, and that's cool, I'm not gonna complain about that, but not all campaigns are like that (I'm looking to create an entirely new planet devoid of Core Races for my setting in fact), and it would help tremendously to have a template.

A big +1 to fey and plant races, as well.

I just hope the catfolk are the new Thundercats in appearance but all them have tails.

I don't think it's impossible for a Celestial to get it on with an elf or a gnome instead of a human, yet the descriptions clearly indicate all these chreatures as human with "a little bit extra".

Big +1 to that -- I mean, it's fine to make it that humans are the only ones who can crossbreed with other humanoid races (more or less, Orogs, Mogrelmen and Ogrekin notwithstanding), but when we're dealing with shape-shifting celestial/infernal/abyssal, whatever -- why on earth wouldn't there be such things? (I mean, I would think that there'd be more Oread-ian dwarves than humans) I always thought that all forms of Planetouched *should* be templates that you put over the base race -- and so I'm very (very) supportive of that kind of approach being used here.

It's a great way to update a monster or NPC (just increase the CR by +1 or whatever), but since Pathfinder seems to lack a level adjustment rule for PCs, either all PCs would need to have a template to even things out, or new rules would need to be made, or the templates would have to have an equal number of drawbacks as it does benefits, and that can be somewhat difficult.

Ah Golden-Esque to be able to play once a week or multiple times per week.

Obviously you are still young and possibly single.

Savor and appreciate these gaming days. Because the future is coming with work, marriage or a relationship, and possibly children and once a week will turn into once or twice a month if you are lucky.

Thank you for your honest feedback. Yes the power-gamers and number crunchers tend to be overly boisterous on the forums.

Liberty's Edge

I would also like to see no new racial features for the races in the core book. With the APG that imo is covered. They should also take a look at the Tome of Horrors complete for some inspiration. Inside you have 25-30 playable races. They usually have a bonus and a minus like the usual to attributes. Except some of the stronger races have four bonuses to attributes and those bonuses are higher than +4. A few even have a +10. Which make sense imo as not all races are created equal Nor should they for the sake of balance. The last thing I want to see is races being neutuered because a vocal minority decides it's too strong, or as some in our hobby are too fond of saying "broken" Either they do the book properly or don't do it all. Even if a race is deemed to strong you cna outlaw it at the gaming table. people mention they hate feat taxes. I dislike attribute taxes for taking something non-standard.

I not sure if would be new races but I like to see Dragonborn and Warforged

Liberty's Edge

I would love to see the PFRPG designers impose a PC-class HD maximum on those races that have racial HD. To justify a humanoid-dominated world there has to be some reason. The reason I like is that the reproductive rates for the humanoids exceeds that of the non-humanoids AND that the humanoids are able to access more class level benefits, making their mightiest champions more adaptable than the non-humanoids. A minotaur Fighter 8, for example, shouldn't be able to have as many Fighter HP as a Human Fighter 14. That way, the Human Fighter has a biological reason to conquer the minotaur.

Applying that, and reproductive speed, makes the dominance of man plausible.

As much as i would agree with this (my first ever character was a dragonborn (3.5) paladin, and my second was a warforged fighter), they would almost certainly be un-copyable due to them not being OGL.

However, both races are already fine to be added into PF without any modifications. both were more than good enough as it is.

yeah I know that this material is no for free use but I like to see a new better version of them for Pathfinder, no the names but the concept and I think that can be created

No, NO, NNNOOOOOOO!

Please, to me these things are the sparkly vampires of D&D lore. Please let them be buried very deeply in faults of creatures that never see the light of day again.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

take the half dragon template and leave the oh why did Paizo create this unbalanced piece of trash arguments for another time.

Except few games start at level 4! That is a CR 3 template with 1 class level. A draconic player race is needed.

then the race would have to be called something other than dragonborn.

scaleborn

all come to mind

Pointing out draconians helps illustrate why the "ew, keep it out" reaction to dragonborn-ish races is a bit odd though. Don't have any problem with people wanting a Warforged-analogue either.

More options for the Changeling seconded,

Most half-races are templates, only half-Elf and half-Orc are base races.
A Halfling with demon blood exists in the 3.x Fiend Folio, but I get where your coming at. I make my own touch-race templates to do what you are wanting

More options for changeling bumped. They very quickly became my favorite race for some reason. I would especially hope for favored class options, more traits (for all races) and possibly racial feats.

I'll admit, I would like to see some kind of warforged or other constructed race. I have been a fan of a construct based race since 2nd edition. I just hope whatever take is made on it is a well incorporated storyline. (Then again, I did run a Ravenloft campaign where we had an awakened plant (small crab apple tree) druid, so we have some interesting options over here)

I agree with the dragon born comment though. Dragons feel like they should be special and end-gamey. It kind of feels like a rip off to see everyone running around with a cheap knock off, especially after they stopped having special restrictions after 3ed. Lizard folk fit that scale based niche just fine, with half-dragon working just as well if allowed.

you know I did think of something on the half dragon template.

see about taking it and at lvls 1 through whatever get the powers as you level up so your no more powerful than anyone else.
this way the ecl garbage could be ignored.

or do you prefer the one shot and get everything with the ecl garbage?

well we could get
Wyvernborns... hahahahahahaha with venomous clawed natural attacks

and wings too.....

The Half-dragon template is not a good option for players because all the abilities is based on racial HD

and like I said before the name is not the important but the concept

Racial class archetypes

I don't really have any suggestions - I leave that stuff to abler minds, but it seems to me you could come up with some cool stuff.

I would like to see Shifters, Warforged and Changelings (3.5 Eberron style) although I guess there maybe copyright issues.

Goliath's would be good as well, and something similar to the Ogres from the Wheel of Time books.

And elves with proper eyes and ears!

I like to see more favored class option like the ones presented in Advanced Players Guide for the other races and the new classes presented

-A ton of new racial feats for races new and old.

-More racial favored class bonuses for all classes.

-More racial traits for every race.

-The addition of Aberration, Dragon, and Magical Beast types for the race building chapter.

-More racial weapons, tools, magic items, spells, etc.

Oooh, I've just thought of something. (And please pardon me if it's been mentioned before.) Racial paragon classes, or even race-exclusive base classes. All the way up to 20.

My PC is elfer than yours.

If I remember correctly that the guys at Paizo had an idea to give races new and/or improved racial abilities as they level. I would love to an option like that one day.

A Feat that grants scent ability to animal like races such as Catfolk, Kitsiune, Ratfolk, etc.

Feats that make using claws and other natural weapons more useful/practical.

I think an inclusive Therianthrope race, or Theriocephalic race, with the heads of different animals on humanoid bodies. Maybe +2 Wisdom, -2 Intelligence, and a variable +2 Str, Dex, or Con, depending on the base animal. For example, bull-head might get +2 Str, cat-head +2 Dex, bear-head +2 Con.

They can have a primal rage ability that let's them increase their physical stat by +2 or +4 for 4 rounds + Con mod rounds per day, +2 rounds per each additional hit die gained.

Lowlight vision, maybe a bonus to Acrobatics, Climb, and Stealth checks, +2 to Perception and Survival checks.

Maybe a natural weapon, fast movement, scent, etc., based on animal form.

I can't hide that I'm totally scared by the idea that with this book there will be even more "reason" to see countless adventuring groups composed of all-kind-freaks that share nothing with one-another.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Races though don't make an adventuring group share nothing in common. All members of the party at least share some cognitive thought and the lust for adventure.

But yeah for me, I'd love to see that. I'm so sick and tired of every RPG pretty much having Human Elf and Dwarf as the playable races. I long for the days that we could play wizardy in pnp format.

Since you might not have heard of it..
Wizardy 8 was a game where you did have an adventuring party that was composed of all sorts of freaks. Rawulf were a wolf like race, Felpurr were cat-like, then you had the standad human, elf, dwarf.. as well as a dragon race, a lizardman race, fairies, automatron(NPC only) Ratkin (NPC only) and a few others I don't quite remember. Allowed one to make a well rounded party.

To go back to an earlier post I made about Planetouched, this is the template I use. Mind you, I use the trait rules in the APL, and taking a planetouched template is a trait, and the template has its own drawbacks as well. But here's what I came up with:

AASIMAR
Aasimar have celestial blood in their family. Often, in the cases of devout paladins and clerics, a celestial will offer herself as a consort, granting a small amount of divine power to that entire bloodline, though particularly devout people of any class may also gain this boon. In any case, those of this bloodline are particularly attuned to the call of the divine.
Racial Appearance – Aasimar have one or two of the following: Silver or Pearlescent eyes, Silver or Golden hair, Golden or Emerald skin, feathers in hair, vestigial feathered wings (grow if flight spells/powers are used) small bells that accompany voice, faint smell of mountain flowers, or always appears/feels slightly damp (as though just out of a bath, no penalty).
Racial Attributes:
Light (Sp): 1/day create light, as per the spell
Cold Resistance 5
Electricity Resistance 5
Racial Drawbacks:
Evil aligned damage affects character (+2d6 damage if already good)
If a Sorcerer, must carry the Celestial bloodline

TIEFLING
Tieflings have fiendish blood in their family. Often, demons will try to infuse families with a propensity for good with Abyssal blood to corrupt the bloodline, while devils will use their Infernal blood to bolster families who aid them well. Both types of blood affect mortal lines in similar ways, and mortals with this tie are particularly attuned to the profane.
Racial Appearance – Tieflings have one or two of the following physical traits: small horns on head, fangs, crimson or obsidian skin, snake-like or cat-like eyes, cloven feet, goat-like legs, forked tongue, vestigial leathery wings (grow if flight spells/powers are used), a faint aroma of brimstone, metallic quality to voice, appears/feels slightly cool to the touch.
Racial Attributes:
Darkness (Sp): 1/day as per the spell
Fire Resistance 5
If Abyssal, Acid Resistance 5
If Infernal, Electricity Resistance 5
Racial Drawbacks:
Good aligned damage affects character (+2d6 damage if already evil)
If a Sorcerer, must carry the Infernal or Abyssal bloodline

SYRNETH
The Syrne are those who have the essence of Shadow in their blood. Somewhere in this person’s ancestry, one of the shadow folk infiltrated his family, and probably never left. People with this bloodline have a natural affinity for darkness and the plane of Shadow.
Racial Appearance – Syrneth have one or two of the following: ghostly glowing eyes, pale or monochrome skin, flat black hair, slight build, vestigial furred wings (grow if flight spells/powers are used), soft ethereal quality to voice, faint smell of spring rain, slight ghostly glow around body
Racial Attributes:
Darkvision 60’
Illusion spells act as though they were Heightened
Racial Drawbacks:
Silver Vulnerability 5
If a Wizard, must specialize in Illusion
If a Sorcerer, must carry the Shadow bloodline.

SIDHE
Sidhe characters have the blood of the fey in them. The fey are capricious, and do not seem to have a reason for consorting with mortals. However, when they do, the offspring have traits of the fey. These people tend to have a much stronger connection to nature than others.
Racial Appearance – Sidhe have one or two of the following: blue, green, or purple hair, amber or opalescent eyes, constant glittery appearance, slight stature, vestigial butterfly or dragonfly wings (grow if flight spells/powers are used), soft wind or Fey laughter inside voice, faint smell of the forest, supernaturally smooth skin.
Racial Attributes:
Knowledge (nature), Perception, and Perform are class skills
+1 to Reflex Saves
Racial Drawbacks:
Cold Iron Vulnerability 5
-1 to Will Saves
If Sorcerer, must carry the Fey bloodline

SYLPH
Sylphs have the blood of the Djinn somewhere in their family. The Djinn generally enter a family known for upholding tenants of honor and freedom, granting a bit of Air Elemental power to a family.
Racial Appearance – Sylphs have one or two of the following: white or silver hair, sky blue or white skin, silver or grey eyes, lightweight appearance (bouncy), airy light voice, a faint aroma of mountain wind, feels cool to the touch.
Racial Attributes:
+10’ to fly speed when under fly effects
Cold Resistance 10
Racial Drawbacks:
Fire Vulnerability 5 (5 extra damage from fire effects)
If Sorcerer, must carry the Elemental (Air) bloodline

OREAD
Oreads have the blood of the Shaitan in their veins. Shaitan generally enter a family that is known for its honor and lawful outlook, granting a bit of Earth Elemental power to a family.
Racial Appearance – Oreads have one or two of the following: black or brown hair, earth-tone or metallic skin (forest green, brown, silver, gold), brown or green eyes, heavyweight appearance (muscular), deep earthy voice, a faint aroma of earth, tingles to the touch.
Racial Attributes:
Character adds Constitution modifier to CMD
Electricity Resistance 10
Racial Drawbacks:
Acid Vulnerability 5
If Sorcerer, must carry the Elemental (Earth) bloodline

IFRIT
Ifriti have the blood of the Efreet in their veins. Efreet generally enter a family that is known for its loyalty and familial devotion, granting a bit of Fire Elemental power to a family.
Racial Appearance – Ifriti have one or two of the following: red or blonde hair, bald, red or golden skin, red or yellow eyes, powerful appearance (statuesque), intensely powerful voice, a faint aroma of incense, warm to the touch.
Racial Attributes:
+10’ to movement rate while enhanced
Fire Resistance 10
Racial Drawbacks:
Cold Vulnerability 5
If Sorcerer, must carry the Elemental (Fire) bloodline

UNDINE
Undines have the blood of the Marid in their veins. Marids generally enter a family that is known for open-mindedness and adaptability, granting a bit of Water Elemental power to a family.
Racial Appearance – Undines have one or two of the following: blue or green hair, blue or aqua skin, pearlescent or blue eyes, flexible appearance, melodic voice, a faint aroma of sea water, damp to the touch (no penalties)
Racial Attributes:
+10’ swim speed (or a swim speed of 20’)
Character can hold breath for twice normal time
Acid Resistance 10
Racial Drawbacks:
Electricity Vulnerability 5
If Sorcerer, must carry the Elemental (Water) bloodline

ABERRANT
Aberrants have an aberration in their family. Whether someone in the family was corrupted, or if there was an ancestor actually from the Far Realm is unclear, but it passed some of the powerful taint along, granting power over the spirit.
Racial Appearance – Aberrants have one or two of the following: negative color appearance, solid color eyes (no pupil or iris), hair grows in odd patterns or in odd shapes, twitchy build, mottled skin, unsettling voice, a faint aroma of… something, skin feels off (slippery, scaly, dry).
Racial Attributes:
+2 to intimidate checks, intimidate is a class skill
Spell Resistance equal to level + Charisma modifier
Racial Drawbacks:
5 energy vulnerability
-2 to all Diplomacy and Bluff checks.
If Sorcerer, must carry the Aberrant bloodline

Critique, comment, and show your opinion. I've playtested these options, and they seem to work pretty well, but more opinions are always good.

Also, you may note that the elemental forces are a little wierd in these. Sorry about that. In my campaigns, I always have electricity be earth elemental, cold be air, and acid be water. It just makes more sense to me. but they're easily changesd around if you want them to be traditional.

Well for me, I'm against forcing them to have a specific bloodline like that, or the "you must look like this" aspects.

Cause first off Tieflings are more than just devils, they are a number of other creatures involved such as Rashaka.

Secondly, the bloodlines don't exactly come having your daddy be a dragon.

Quote:
This source can represent a blood relation or an extreme event involving a creature somewhere in the family's past. For example, a sorcerer might have a dragon as a distant relative or her grandfather might have signed a terrible contract with a devil.

So while the planetouched may have not manifested, quite possible something else did. Especially when you consider that some of the bloodlines don't really make sense bloodline wise. Such as Destined or Pestilence.

Yeah, these are just examples, more or less, but I have teh appearance list and then the plaintouched chooses one or two of the physical traits. That way, they very much look like the base race, but also have that 'little something extra'.

As far as those with Rakshasa history in their family, I think that could give powers akin to shapechanging, as well as drawbacks similar to the tiefling. but these are examples of what I use in my games.

Alluria Publishing has in their Remarkable Races line of books a race called Animus, which is exactly what you describe: humans with animal heads.

No, that is animals with human bodies. Like the way the Egyption gods are. Not the same thing. Like how drow are not just black elves and black elves are not drow.

As for the Rakshasa, Its part of the tieflings write up since council of thieves. Has its own stats, but then there is the bloodline for the sorcerer.

Tieflings also gained 99 or so possible traits (then whatever else a player may add) as some tielfings are born from things that look like giant slugs.. Some born from giant furry frog etc.

I just saw that sorc have "Pestilence bloodline" which isn't that you where born from a union of a woman and a disease, but you where born during your mother having a plague of some fashion.

Everyone being human can't cure terrible roleplayers. Everyone being weird races can't ruin good ones.

Ignoring the DM's homebrew world fluff can make the story worse though. If the DM is using a prepublished setting and gets upset that someone used something directly from it then the DM is bad for no laying out his house rules at the beginning or is bad for not knowing everything about the world he is using.

Id love to see some of the distant worlds races, especially the Lashunta.
Maybe the Lizardfolk from Akiton or the races from Triaxus.

The Lashunta will be in the Monsters of the Innersea book.
