No-daichi Stats

Homebrew and House Rules

I'm wondering if anyone has Stats for a No-daichi from either 3.5 or Pathfinder. The only stats i have are from 2nd ED. So i would like to try and get a more up dated version if i can. Thanks :)

Greatsword.

No joke, that's how I'd do it.

Two-handed curved sword.

I'm going to first point out that there is no reason to treat a katana differently from a longsword -- however, based on 3.0 weapon conventions, I agree that using the bastard sword statistics are also fine.

Following that, I agree with Evil Lincoln: a greatsword is perfectly suitable for a two-handed sword.

Thats how I've aways done it as well

+1 for the greatsword. One could tweak the numbers of a greatsword to arrive at something a bit different but really, why bother? If you're of the school of thought in which all Japanese-themed swords are somehow superior to the western counterparts *cough*, then simply say that a no-daichi can only be made as a masterwork greatsword with the equivalent price increase.

This.

Although, you should also watch the Seven Samurai and count the number of swords that break.

Or falchion if you want it similar to the 'curved blade' line of damage and criticals as D&D/Pathfinder seems wont to do.

Large bastard sword

But how do you correctly model the fact that even owning a blade like a no-dachi makes you cooler than normal people? It should obviously give you a +4 to Intimidate, automatically grant you the Dazzling Display feat, and any opponent coming within fifteen feet of you has to make a Will save (DC one BAZILLION) or crap his or her pants.

But seriously, it's a greatsword.

Wouldn't that take a -2 penalty for being the incorrect size for use?

Yup, and you need Exotic weapon Proficieny just to wield two handed... But the level of badassness is beyond measure.

Amiri and Zaraki Kenpachi would agree.

First, i apologise for the thread-necromancy. i promise to try to avoid it in the future.

i find this subject near and dear to my hearts, however, and thus cannot avoid it. That said....

The no-dachi is a specific type of two-handed greatsword, and should use the stats for same if there is not a specific, published entry for it. It is large, heavy, and primarily intended for cutting cavalry off of horses, similar to the manner of the Scottish claidheamh da lamh (literally: two-handed sword). Occasionally it would be used by cavalry against infantry, but was very unsuitable for this purpose due to its size, weight, and balance.

At no point in time could a no-dachi be confused with any sort of bastard sword, as both the blade length and the overall length is significantly longer than any longsword's, never mind the shorter bastard sword. To qualify as a no-dachi, the blade must be at least 3 shaku in length (41.88" or 1.635m) and are commonly more than that. Longswords in comparison are between 2 and 3 shaku, and short swords are between 1 and 2. The Japanese did not have a true bastard sword equivalent, as almost all of the short and longswords had longer grips than their European counterparts, easily mounting both hands; and were used without modification for both one- and two-handed styles at different time periods.

Please don't call the no-dachi a bastard sword. Blades everywhere weep themselves rusty every time it happens. ;_;

PS: yes, i do own one (a no-dachi) and will happily provide pictures for reference if requested.

Crack open ultimate combat. The Nodachi is actually there. Paizo has had official stats for it for a long time. It is also a martial weapon, not exotic.

But this thread was written "a long time" ago, before Ultimate Combat.

Then that, as they say, is that.

I think that, with your avatar, you should stick with "That's all folks" :)
