D&D is defined very much by its Art and its moral ands ethical themes. However recent criminal charges were laid against a collector of Japanese Manga that Anything in the way of depicting non adults naked or performing acts of Violence ammounted to child endangerment.

A female 'Kender' having a sexual relationship with an adult male human in the Spelljammer Cloakmaster's Cycle novels is considered a thinly veiled challenge to Paedophilia Laws.

Naked Teenagers riding Dragons on the cover of Ursula Le Guins latest Pern Novel was considered borderline art work.

Even Pathfinder has a few questionable art choices...

Where are the Limits? Do they have to be defined by laws and Policed?

Granted, I haven't seen every piece of Pathfinder artwork, but I can't imagine them putting out anything objectionable. Which ones are you talking about specifically?

Pern... Porn... coincidence? I THINK NOT!

I care not for Ursula Le Guins latest novel of whatever. Now Anne McCaffrey writes some nice stories set in a world called Pern.

The first 3 Earthsea books were good, especially 1 and 3, but Tehanu really, really jumped the shark.

Will somebody PLEASE think of the children?

What a yummy can of worms we've opened.
The issue of scantily clad women in game art is just an example of how you can't please everyone. Some people want to see it and other's don't. Which do you disappoint? Which do you offend? People seem to get so offended and bent out of shape over so many inconsequential things these days. With all the problems in the world, I just can't understand getting that upset over art.

*EDIT* Never mind that last statement. The previous post disappeared.

If they are intending to do porn, will Urizen please get in touch with them and explain how they are doing it wrong?

Charlie Bell wrote:

No, it's anything but a coincidence. You see, the Pern books are filled with subliminal messages that infect the human mind with an obsessive love of porn. And, in a vice versa move, all pornography contains subliminal messageas encouraging people to read the Pern novels. It's a vicious cylce perpetuated by our secret Robot Insect Overlords to occupy our minds and make it easier for them to take control of the world's supply of corn.

Sorry about that. I couldn't make my statement sound right, so I deleted it. Blah...

Anyway, I will say that assuming that racy art is inconsequential is a bad assumption. It does have an effect on society, whether we see it ourselves or not. All I advocating is to go for more balance in our game art. Can there be racy images? Sure, otherwise we have to get rid of succubi entirely and banish them to the dark space between the planes. But there should be more balance in what we depict, meaning less adventurers with breastplates that leave the heart exposed.

If only it were Scantily clad women we were discussing...

I'm talking about the depiction of children (whether as Kender or as naked young teenagers riding an 'Anne Macaffrey' Dragon through the Skies of Pern) in a fantasy setting.

One of the more sucessful and popular fantasy fiction writers goes on about Game of Thrones novel being about a young girl's sexual comming of age (as opposed to the Film miniseries). Ill go find the podcast.

I...really don't know about the pedophilia angle. I haven't seen that much of it in fantasy writing, but I also don't read a whole lot of it.

In the OP, though, you mentioned a manga artist being arrested, and on that topic I can tell you that it was probably not just an overreaction. They do have a strong tone of pedophilia in a lot of their works, so a little peeling back in that area could be a good thing.

String Theory invalidates porn.

A minor nitpick- it was not a mangaka, but a collector. Also, I must strongly disagree on the pedophilia tone suggested to be in a "lot of their works"- it is considered just as abberant in Japan as it is in most countries, and it is truly unfortunate that a few serious deviants are seen as representative of a particular art style. I've been following japanese stuff since I was 5, and neither myself nor the host of people I regularly associate with who are also into it are pedophiles. I would suggest better education on the part of those who are concerned about pedophilia before any doors are kicked own.

G-String Theory validates porn.

I agree there does need to be more porn in the world... although maybe not so much with the halfling human stuff >.>

Porn's great, but it doesn't usually lead to people getting born. I think that one IS a coincidence.

You might be right there. =)

The porn must flow and suffocate the lolcats.

This thread is totally unnatural. Adults discussing porn without someone coming in to preach.

Note, if I preached, I would be considered a hypocrite.

Second, I've done gun porn before.

Third, Chicks in Chainmail Bikinis go back to the days of Pulp Magazines and Pulp Publishing.

Fourth, this thread doesn't contain trolls.

Fifth, I'm rambling on just so say something on this thread.

Sixth. If America were chockful of nudist families, Porn would be considered snake oil and everyone will laugh, laugh, laugh, laugh, and laugh, and laugh . . . did I mention that they'll laugh?

Therefore, Porn requires a society like ours to thrive. Who's got popcorn?

I don't know the story on this one, so you've got me there, but there really is a nasty amount of pedophilia in the material that most foreigners never see. It's not indicative of the style and it's not going to brain-wash people into being pedophiles, but it is there. However, you are right on the doors-kicking-down thing. That's not the best response.

You are suggesting that people in America get more education about something before they begin grabbing their pitchforks and torches?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I tend to straddle the line between royal fool and village idiot. I can never quite make up my mind.

As author of the 'Cheesecake- Too Much?' thread, I feel obligated to weigh in on this one. :)

Is RPG artwork sometimes in poor taste? Yes, sometimes it is.
Is D&D brimming with pornography? NO, D&D IS NOT PORN.
