Rules Questions

Another simple question probably from this idiot lol...

ok so my char has Headband of Mental Superiority +4. Could I also buy a Tome of Clear Thought + 1-5? Would they stack since they are comming from different areas or no just the higher one like usual? Also can you keep buying Tomes of Clear Thought to keep increasing your IQ/CHA/WD? Thankyou in advance for the help I know it probably says it somewhere in the book.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

The headband gives an enhancement bonus, while the tomes give an inherent bonus. Different bonus types always stack.

Do note that inherent bonuses can only go up to +5 total (barring some sorcerer bloodlines.

The tomes don't stack, only the strongest apply.

so if you read a +1 Tome and then a +3 Tome, you get a +3 inherent bonus, not a +4.

Really? Why not? Wishes 'stack' in this fashion for the purposes of adding inherent bonusus, and price wise buying 1 +5 book is the same as 5 +1 books....

Not really.

You can cast some Wishes in immediate succession in order to get a higher bonus, but that's because one wish can't grant higher than a +1. A Wished inherent bonus doesn't stack with a tome inherent bonus or even another Wished inherent bonus that was cast more than 1 round apart.

Wish: "Grant a creature a +1 inherent bonus to an ability score. Two to five wish spells cast in immediate succession can grant a creature a +2 to +5 inherent bonus to an ability score (two wishes for a +2 inherent bonus, three wishes for a +3 inherent bonus, and so on). Inherent bonuses are instantaneous, so they cannot be dispelled. Note: An inherent bonus may not exceed +5 for a single ability score, and inherent bonuses to a particular ability score do not stack, so only the best one applies."

So you're saying that if a character finds a +3 book as treasure he would still have to cast 5 wishes to go from +3 to +5 later? wow.

I think my group will just keep our rule that books and wishes are actually changes to the stat in question. We don't allow temporary inherent bonuses to stack with permanent inherent bonuses, but allow 1 wish = 1 permanent point to a stat stack with a book = variable permanent points to a stat.
