Magus vs. F / W / Eldritch Knight

Round 3: Revised Magus Discussion

Curious how the magus stacks up against the classic eldritch knight

Lets go with 17th level, where most campains end.

F1/W6/EK 10 BAB 15 Saves: F 9 R 5 W 8 HD 1D10+6D6+10d10 average 86

Magus 17 BAB 12 Saves: F 10 R 5 W 10 HD 17d8 average 80

Not a ton of difference there. Its the spells where there is a lot off difference and of course the class abilities of the magus.

How do they compare?

( I wish we had epic rules to know how to handle things like EK at that level. in 3.5 I used to let players continue the class ...or take something like abjurant champion after they finished EK...but only after they finished )

To me the appeal of the magus over the EK is spell strike/spell combat where as most of the time the EK is deciding between hitting or casting, although EK is still my first love, the magus' abilities and availability as a base class has somewhat won me over.

+1

Also, I like that idea of abjurant champ as a last 5 levels idea.

One of the main reason I liked the spellsword for 5 level so much was for the spell channeling ability that lets one fight AND cast. The magus does a better job of it then the spell channeling but is much more limited in fighting style and spell list/spell level (the fighter 1/wizard 6/spellsword 5/AC 5/wizard 3 had BAB of 15 and 9th level spells...albeit I usually did the last 3 levels of EK for max 8th level spells and a BAB of 17). And of course doesn't allow for a no save magic nullification(spell channeled AMF made the critter hit be affected by AMF...no save...also solid fog based spells were also mean to do this with) or the ability to "cast" personal spells on others by hitting them :P . Anyways, karl is right, the magus can do both in a round and that is a BIG deal. However from a pure power perspective, your giving up 9th level spells...there isn't much to compare to 9th level spells. Also the EK kinda sucks to build up at low levels. Yeah they can be fun at high levels...but the low ones suck for them.

just like to remind you that:
EK stacks with and as fighter lvls.

magus at lvl 10 counts as half magus lvls as fighter( which means at lvl 10 you can get weapon spec)

Why not have both. I think Arcane pool should be tied in with caster level not class level that way going with a prestiges class wont totally gimp the Character. So instead of Half Class Level it should read Half Caster Level plus int mod.

So how well would the Magus prestige as an Eldritch Knight?

Magus 10/EK 10?

as far ais it goes, you loose everything magus above lvl 10 abilities.

treated more or less as a lvl 15 fighter.

extra fighter feats + magus spells.

Unless you are willing to change all the other casters class abilities to be run off caster level too...umm no.
