In other news - I greeted Jeff (the new airman in my flight) this morning by throwing a soft plush softball at his head. I then convinced him it wasn't me, but a much higher ranking sergeant. Ahhhh new guys.
Also - the war with my cat continues. Mildred Percival Wexley ended a month-long truce by deciding that, sometime in the dark hours of the early morning, it was time for feline mardi-gras.
grumbly groggy nathan stumbled out of the bedroom, stepped on one of the sets of beads left over from the kitty bender. I jumped, because it was unexpected and a little painful, and landed on another set. I tripped. DOWN GOES THE NATHAN.
As I looked up, groggy, hurt, and angry, I see Mildred. She trotted into sight with another set of beads in her mouth. There was a twinkle in her eyes, as if she was saying "neener, neener, neener", then she spun around in a circle real fast in what I can only assume was a victory dance before bolting into the bedroom and curling up with my wife.
This means war.

You’ll be glad you’re not trying to get your driver’s license in Australia. These are the current steps (as I understand) in my state:
To get your learner driver permit you need to pass a written test and pay a fee.
After holding your learners permit for a minimum of 12 months and logging 120 hours of supervised driving practice, you can take the test for your P1 provisional driver’s license. You need to pass a road driving test to get your P1 license. P1 license holders are restricted to a maximum speed limit, can’t drink any alcohol and drive, and I think are restricted to the number of passengers they can have in the car.
After having your P1 license for 12 months you can take a driving simulation test to get your P2 provisional license. P2 license holders can have a 0 blood alcohol limit and I think have other limits.
After holding your P2 license for 2 years you can take another written and driving simulation test to get your full drivers license.
There are of course fees to pay at each stage.
This all applies to people under the age of 25. I think if you are over 25 you can skip some of the steps or time limits. Luckily I got my license 15 odd years ago when the whole process was quicker, simpler and cheaper.
O.O congratulations, it is a rare thing that any country manages to design a bureaucratic procedure more complicated than the german system, but wow, you did it australia :-)
german system:
you take driving lessons at a certificated driving school
around 10 therory lessons of 45 minutes
12 practical lessons of 90 minutes including:
- 2 overland drives
- 2 city drives
- 2 autobahn drives
- 1 night drive
than you take the theory test if you succeed you can take the practical test
you are on probation the first year, any violation of driving laws and you lose the licence
the whole thing costs between 1.500 and 2000 euro, every practical test costs 180 euro, failure rate is 25 %

Aberzombie's Really Grim Fairy Tales:
The Princess and The Dragon
Once upon a time, in a far away kingdom, there lived the beautiful Princess Marigold. One day, Marigold was kidnapped by the evil dragon Vexendyn. The dragon took the princess back to his mountain cave, and threatened to eat her unless the king paid him his own weight in gold.
The king, not having that kind of money, decided to appeal to the heroic Prince Max of the neighboring kingdom, offering Marigold's hand in marraige if Max would rescue her and slay Venedyn. Max loved Marigold, and was very brave, charming, and skilled with a sword, so he agreed.
Prince Max journeyed through the Forest of Doom, fought past the Swamp of Eternal Frustration, and finally arrived at Vexendyn's cave on Mount Gump. The brave prince called out his opponent and prepared for battle.
Vexendyn killed and ate him.
Then, for good measure, he killed and ate the princess.
Then, for further good measure, he flew to the king's castle, killed the king and all his friends, and burned his damn castle down.
The end.

You have been reading the original Grimm's haven't you?
No, but they were the original inspiration. I used to do stories like this years ago, and for the life of me I can't remember who I did them for. But I recalled them yesterday while the wife and I were watching Once Upon A Time, so I thought I'd revive the practice for my fellow FAWTLies.

Spill man spill!!!!!
well, let me start with the Grimms, they where (like me) born in Hanau and lived quite some time in Steinau an der Straße (that is Stone-Meadow at the Street) both are in the Kinzigtal Valley, where I live. In their times that where the lands of the Dukes of Hanau (Grafen von Hanau), the Baron Hutts (yes, realy Baron von Hutten) and the Princes of the Holy Empire at Ysenburg (reichsfürst von Ysenburg.
One theorie of Schneewittche (SnowWhite) places it in Lohr am Main they have a talking mirror which meant a mirror with writting on the frame (most people could not read and thought written words where magicmuch cooler is the nearby Castle Mesplebrunn
North of Lohr (and south of me) are the rolling hills with deep dark woods called The Spessart (Woodpecker Woods), in older times home of robbers, rebels, ghost and werewolf tales and a lot of medival cole mines.
In the cole mines worked childern (everyone else was to big for the shafts) they looked like old man from the hard labor and are the possible source of the dwarf legend
the red hood is in german a red hat and part of the Tracht of the Schwalm north of the Vogelsberg (Bird Mountains) and south of the Habichtswald Mountains (Goshhawk Woods, see a trend there?)

Either or.
I used to enjoy it. But his constant use of OOC verbal diarrhea from his characters to explain plot points, plus the overuse of fortunate circumstances (read: Ass Pulls) to save characters has made it so I just read it out of habit.
Examples being Dies explaining to Fox about her destiny, and Dies surviving the demon, respectively.

I am going to take this step by step here.
First Stone-meadow is a bad assed name for a village in a game. Stone-meadow at the street seems like a mouthfull. Are many places named such or do some of them have simpler names. Are they sometimes shortened by the locals?
When looking up the Dukes of Hanau, they are listed, at least in wikipedia, as Counts. Is there much of a difference or is this just a translation issue?
The princes of the holy roman empire? Where is Ysenburg. Burg means city, is that correct? If so what does Ysen mean?
Words are magic. :) literature is wonder. It is why I like the Grimms, the Red book and the Arabian nights.
Yes I do see a trend, what other interesting names are there in the region?
The red hood being part of the local garb. Does this mean she was wearing this outfit at the time, and as such tries to date the red riding hood story to this time period, or does it rather point out an anachronism, and as such is a part of the story that someone not knowing the region might be missing?
I am assuming you mean Coal mining. I have heard of that theory before. It does give an interesting idea for dwarves in a setting. For rather than digging for gold and gems. They are hard working coal miners paid for not by the crown but by everyday working people for their labors.
If I ask too many questions, I apologize. You're just a great resource. :)

First Stone-meadow is a bad assed name for a village in a game. Stone-meadow at the street seems like a mouthfull. Are many places named such or do some of them have simpler names. Are they sometimes shortened by the locals?
If Names are shared by Towns they usually have kind of a "last name" to separate usually with the name of a nearby River like "Frankfiurt am Main" and Frankfurt an der Oder" or "Rothenburg ob der tauber" and "Rothenburg an der Fulda". Steinau is at the old Via Regia, the Empireal Trade Route from Frankfurt (Main) to Leipzig, that's where "at the Street" comes form
When looking up the Dukes of Hanau, they are listed, at least in wikipedia, as Counts. Is there much of a difference or is this just a translation issue?
Wrong Translation, it's Counts. Dukes are much higher ranking nobles. Duchys where Bavaria and Saxony. Our Neighbour Luxembourg is still a Grand Duchy
The princes of the holy roman empire? Where is Ysenburg. Burg means city, is that correct? If so what does Ysen mean?
Prince of the Empire is a Title similar to Duke in rank. the English Wiki entry is under the alternate spelling "Isenburg"
entry
german entry with pics and coats of arms
Isen is very old maybe meaning Iron
Words are magic. :) literature is wonder. It is why I like the Grimms, the Red book and the Arabian nights.

hmm, good question, I think the story is very old but the Brothers Grimm used a garb that was in use at their time to make it resent
I am assuming you mean Coal mining. I have heard of that theory before. It does give an interesting idea for dwarves in a setting. For rather than digging for gold and gems. They are hard working coal miners paid for not by the crown but by everyday working people for their labors.

I'm seriously considering it. I went to the '10 con and had a blast. If you haven't been before TOZ, make sure you hit up the meet and great and get with Timitius for the tour of Seattle if you haven't been there.
You'll want to make sure you stay at the hotel the Con is at, it's way easier then trying ot commute about.
