Agh, up too early.

Good morning FAWTLY Folk! Happy Friday!

Scarab Sages

I hope everyone has a great day.

Silver Crusade

Morning, all. What did I miss?

Scarab Sages

Took the day off work. I only had 4 hours to go anyway, so I figured I might as well use up some annual leave, take the day and get some work done around the house.

Scarab Sages

Incidentally, my work will involve power tools.

I can never remember:

Is it "measure once, cut twice", "measure twice, cut once", or "measure around 10 times, cut once, then cuss up a storm because you f$&$ex up anyway"?

Well, Steve's hoped for good night of sleep was cut short by an invasion of male dogs casing after a female in heat. Meanwhile, Patrick's attempt to make the donuts was cut short when it was discovered that the bakery had been robbed of all it's rolling pins. And, across town, Scott's home repair project ended in disaster when......No, wait! That's my soap opera.

Scarab Sages

The weird part about doing work in my house involving measurements is that the house is so old (about 67 years) many of the walls/floors/etc are rather crooked.

Scarab Sages

Ah well, short and sweet today. Gotta get busy. Plus, the computer is f%%~ed up, so these posts are from the iPhone. Stoopid Internet explorer.

Finally figured out the right name for my Tengu Gunslinger.

At least I'll get ONE weekend out of the boon before they are fully legal for play.

Zombies have more style. And more hp. And break less.

So, my boss wants us to let him know if we're going to log more than 45 hours in a particular week.

I'm at 47 before today even starts. I think I'm going over.

Hell, I'm going to be in a car with you for 3 hours. How bad could it be?

The bank I worked at from 2003 until 2007 started laying off employees about 9 months after I quit. I know the feeling :)

Had a new hire come to a job I was at because she was unhappy at her old place. That Wednesday we watched the FBI raid her old company on the news, and found out the CEO killed himself... O.o

That sounds like it must have been a fun company to work for. O_o

Sovereign Court

Heh, I and my coworker on a doomed project were on our way out, which is why this poor girl was hired. It was an ISP, and the owner (I don't think he was technically a CEO) was stealing cash from it. They literally had a "server room" they showed visiting clients through a window that was a darkened room with boxes that pretty much had flashing LED lights and nothing more.

Our job was horrible, but she was right, hers was worse.

I left that job for my next one, and that company was bought by a public company. About 3 months after we were purchased we were called into an emergency meeting on September 11. the new COO, who'd been there a week, informed us that our CEO and his brother, who was a VP of something or other, had both been arrested by the FBI on securities fraud.

...

Hmmm. You know? I'm surprised I'm not more jaded and cynical than I am. Strung together like that, it's kinda crazy.

Are you sure you don't live in Sicily?

Sovereign Court

Hmmm...maybe that's it.

the owner of my company before he sold it to the public place was a good, concientious owner. Some jobs have been worse than others, but in general I've been pretty happy with my moves. The only one that really hurt was the company I loved being closed down by the public company that bought us. That was a cool place to work. But moving to Houston hasn't been all bad either.

:)

Er...I mean, Sicily.

Wow. As much as I gripe about my job, at least I have one!

(I keep telling myself that.) ;)

I had to get up early this morning. (Compared to Summer hours) It's the kids first day of school!

YAY! Get out of the house and learn something! :D

Sovereign Court

Yeah. I've graduated from hanging onto a bad job out of fear until they eject me (so far, it's generally been for my own good), to starting to look before it all goes to hell, but not finding one until a month later, to getting out before it all goes to hell.

at least I"m learning, right? :)

My job is monotonous and sometimes frustrating but I like it.

What I love about it is that our boss pays all our insurance payments in full.

While my job frustrates me, it is rather secure, and I definitely like that about it.

  • I am directly responsible for managing relationships totalling around half a billion dollars in assets.
  • My department is adding headcount. They are having difficulty finding qualified applicants, so we have 3 openings.
  • We are all so busy we work a ton of overtime.
  • They've shifted additional client loads onto my department.

All of those would seem to indicate my role is expanding, not being made obsolete.

While it is not always worth the stress, it is working well for me right now, and if I get too sick of it, I can look for something new while staying on until I find it.

Sovereign Court

Yeah, switching jobs was tough. I went from the guru who knew everything to the freakin' noob again. I hate that.

But same thing. We're busy as hell. the only thing that might make this job untennable long term is the stress, but I've taken steps to change that for our whole team already, and the boss and coworkers were cool with my suggestions.

I can't wait until I get insurance! COBRA is killing me.

Mostly I'm doing database and common sense when it comes to data management and troubleshooting. I hope to get some development projects soon as well. :) We're mostly a Microsoft shop (most of the place I've worked have been). It's one of those "breadth of experience" kinda jobs instead of "depth of experience", if that makes sense.

Grand Lodge

Pathfinder Adventure, Rulebook Subscriber

If we end up in Houston, I'll have to see if there is an opening. And study databases. Which I need to do for my shops trouble ticket system anyway.

Sovereign Court

mess around wit mySQL. It's free and will give you a good basis. try to write some tables to store rpg character information or something. That will give you lots of fun practice with tables. Look into normalization, always an important consideration.

Google is the best programming reference ever.

:)

So close to the end of the page, I might as well...
