Driving 8 hours this weekend in thunderstorms? How can that not be fun! :)

Meanwhile, my son will be riding in a charter bus so he can go to Universal Stuidos in Orlando with the HS band.

How about you?

We took a HS band trip to Orlando. I forgot socks. It made the school paper. *rolls eyes*

Ah, a more innocent time. :)

Not dying. It's something I try to do everyday, but especially on weekends.

That would just suck.

How is Lady Solnes? Feeling better? Haven't seen much of you guys.

*Hugs*

She's feeling much better, about 80% up to snuff.

I've just been tired, been doing nothing but termite jobs the past couple of weeks at work, and not getting any sleep at night hasn't left me in much of a FaWTL mood. :/

What's going on with Solnes?

Sorry you're not doing well either. :S

She's had a nasty head cold, made worse by the tree sperm in the air, but she's on her way up again.

What is this Orlando you speak of? Oh yeah some news on my end. It will be another dual coast year for me. I will be heading to California for a cousin's wedding in May. Sometime in the fall I will be heading to the east coast. In October I will be applying for the apprenticeship at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

The effects were good for their time, the story other than being a bit predictable was still ok. I guess I went into it expecting Lord of the Rings instead I got Spaceballs. But I guess I missed the experience of seeing it as a kid when my expectations would have been much lower, and the magic factor would have been much higher.

I beg to differ, the script was based off of the Japanese classic Hidden Fortress. The special effect were cutting edge in fact nothing at all like it had ever been seen before. In context the movie for nothing more then special effects goes down in history as one of the greats. All other special effects movies since owe Star Wars a debt of gratitude for paving the way for inspiring effects above and beyond what had been done before.

THX sound systems was developed for Star Wars.
Pixar was Developed and spun off of I.L.M. which was made for Star Wars.

I like Space Balls, Love Mel Brooks. It is however not Space Balls, on the contrary Space Balls was the homage and cliche riddled movie making fun of everyone trying to copy Star Wars.

Dune, the book? (bleh)

Dune, the movie? (I loved it. People who read and liked Dune hated it)

Dune, the Sci-Fi miniseries? (Never saw it)

You loved the original movie with Kyle McLaughlan and Sting? Seriously?

Seriously. Admittedly, I was 16 when I saw it. :)

The book bored me to tears, so I never got past the first 50 pages, but I know people who read the books reviled the movie.

I read the book. I read it around the same time I read the first Wheel of Time book. It was interesting to compare the differences. My issue was that Dune characters weren't very well described. I had a really hard time figuring out who was who. Compared to Wheel of Time where every blade of grass seemed to be described in painstaking detail.

Now see I liked the movie. The Mini Series was much better. Loved the novel, Hated the sequels. HATED THE SEQUELS WITH HELLFIRE AND BRIMESTONE HATRED. I could not even finish the second book skipped ahead to the third and gave up. I at least made it through 4 books of the Wheel of time. Bleah to each their own.

If it makes anyone feel better I do wish I had seen it as a kid, if I had I probably would have loved it for pure nostalgia reasons. But I`ve become such a movie snob in my ripe old age of 27.

Well to be honest with all the drivel being produced by hollyweird it is not hard to get jaded.

I get what you're saying. I think that timing had a lot to do with it. There really wasn't much in the way of good science fiction on screen before the first Star Wars came out -- or quite a bit afterward. So you had that going -- so the world was waiting for another good science fiction film to come out and they announced ESB. AND THE BAD GUYS WON! How many movies before that were there where the bad guys won?

But then George Lucas got hit a little hard in the head with a teddy bear and it was all over. ;-)

I still remember the promo info they had traveling out for Revenge of the Jedi, and the prequel films back in the 80's. They showed what would have happened, Wookies not ewoks, and a hint of no final ending, for a possible sequel trilogy. I don't care what he says now, I remember the promos. I wish I had a camera and pictures now.

I'm not dragging politics in here, just emphasizing why this thread is so awesome.

Star Wars isn't politics. It's religion.

Well to be honest with all the drivel being produced by hollyweird it is not hard to get jaded.

The other problem is, of course, that Hollywood officially changed everything from that point forward in the Movie business. Before Star Wars, there was no "licensing" to toys, fast food chains and everything else. It was unheard of.

After Lucas made bazillions with the licensing, the Suits sat up and took notice. Gone were the days of A list and B list movies (Star Wars was a B movie), instead they became "Academy" and "Blockbuster" movies. I appreciate how hard it must be for Jeremy to watch the Original Trilogy and NOT feel jaded. After all the money Star Wars made, Hollywood changed their formulas for how to make movies and copied Lucas' playbook for the last thirty-plus years.

I mean, the only "real" blockbuster before Star Wars was Jaws. That was the first real summer blockbuster, and in two short years, Star Wars blew the lid off that record. Before them, movies like Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz were considered blockbusters (having exceeded $100 million in the box office) only because of regular re-releases in the theater (since there were no VCRs back then). With Jaws and Star Wars, the movie industry learned that special effects and "basic" stories could outsell "art" movies like Woody Allen's by the boatload.
