And I love it when life has a way of working itself out.

Years ago, we bought some really beautiful folding doors for the entrance to WhimseyShire. Over the last few weeks we've been painting them and prepping them, and today I tried to install them...
...only to find that they're 1/2" too tall. GothBard suspects the house has settled in the years since we bought the doors, and I'll admit I've had to plane down the door right next to where they're going, but 1/2" is a heck of a lot.

It's beautiful wood, so the only reasonable solution is to get a table saw with a really fine-toothed blade to cut off the extra 1/2".

Oh, wait a minute! I had to do my own hardwood floors just before COVID hit so I just happen to have a table saw with a hardwood blade sitting in my studio shed... the absolute perfect tool for the job!

(GothBard asks about planing or sanding it down, but it's a full 1/2". I'm not dedicating my shoulders and wrists to planing that much wood... and I think the table saw will do a better job.)

EDIT: And when life gives you lemons, cast off your clothes and folic naked on the grass...

I don't think that naked sanding down half an inch would be advisable.

My brother tried to force me to learn by driving me about a mile from home, parking, and telling me that the only way to get home was for me to drive. I tried a little, but since his teaching method was to call me stupid, tell me to do better, and not give me any advice, I got out and started walking home. I got almost halfway before he pulled up to me, yelled at me some more, and told me to get in the car. Since I suspected that he might just drive us farther away and tell me to drive again, I just kept walking. He then proceeded to insult me for the rest of the weekend until he left, and then for years he would bring it up.

My brother tried that but I don't think he realized that by that point I'd already been walking 7 miles to town anyway so a mile or two home wasn't a big deal.

I'm having a really hard time this weekend. Yesterday would have been our eldest's eighteenth birthday.
Except for WW, my family has largely forgotten, or pretends the day doesn't exist, so I got a text from my mother on Friday asking if I had anything fun planned and a snarky text from WW's stepmother this morning, chiding me for not calling his dad yesterday (it's his birthday, too).
And I didn't quite tell her to f*** right off, but it was a close thing.

Half an inch would be a LOT of settling or wood swelling. Did you measure the doors and the doorframe or just go by the listed height? When I had that problem with screen doors it turns out that they were a "nominal height" like a 2 by 4 isn't 2 by 4

I would use a table saw myself. When I did something similar with a cheap door folks recommended a circular saw instead. It's going to be half an hour of set up for one cut either way. Just be sure to brace the side of the door and NOT (the sides and the top) or you can pinch what you're working on into the saw and send it flying back at you. **rubs snout** only make that mistake once...

I gave them the exact measurements. Obsessive-compulsive, remember? And even the metal rails that go across the top of the door frame are 1/8" too long. So, 1/8" of settling in width, 1/2" of settling in height, or they just done messed up...

...it's OK -- easier to cut things down than if they were too small. But it's still a PITA to have to cut them after I painted them so I'll have to re-paint that side after the cut.

The weather in California is well and truly broken.

Normally, we're infamous for our utter lack of fall as a season. The highs hover in the low-to-mid 70s through late September and even early October, then we get a few days in the 90s just to remind us how unpleasant it must be to live anywhere else, then the highs drop into the 50s until March or April.

So a week of mid-60s weather with scudding clouds and mixed overcast isn't something we see here in the fall. And yet here we are.

The weather fundamentally shifted for us this year. A far wetter winter. A far milder summer. Our reservoirs are doing well, and we've had no massive wildfires to speak of. For almost all of us it's been beneficial.

But it's still bizarre.

Did I mention Karma?

The body shop just called.
(1) They told me not to buy a couple of parts because they could get them. I bought the parts anyway, figuring I could return them. Turns out they needed them.
(2) They told me to get one strut. My brother said, "Always replace them in pairs." The body shop said, "Nice job on getting two struts. We'll replace them both."

Thanks to my and my brother's foresight, the body shop has everything they need. Thanks to my long-term relationship with the manager, she's got a dedicated guy on it, and she expects to have me my Celica back by Friday of this week.

It's fun to burn bridges.

Amazon Recruiter: Hi NobodysHome, I hope this email finds you well. Let me introduce myself, I am a Sourcing Recruiter support the Training & Certification organization. I understand you interviewed with us in 2022 but we were not able to move forward. We are currently hiring for this team and I wanted to check in and see if you would be open to considering opportunities here.

NobodysHome: Thank you for reaching out. I actually chose not to move forward in 2022 because of Amazon's restrictive time off policy. Now that they've added mandatory in-office work to that, I feel you can safely remove me from your potential talent pool.
Thanks for your consideration.

EDIT: The absolute joy is that I'm a "critical fit" for them. I deliver training, I write training, I write certification exams, and I'm a very close match in their industry. I'm in the, "We should outbid Global Megacorporation and grab this guy," category of candidate.
So, "No, I won't work for you because your company's work-life balance policies suck," actually carries some weight coming from me. And if I can save one less-senior employee from the kind of abuse Amazon heaps on its workers every day, then I'm a happy man.

Ever since moving to the state of Iowa, one thing that continues to stick out to me is the absolutely mind-boggling number of custom license plates.

Probably about half of them are sports-related, revolving around either the Iowa Hawkeyes, ISU Cyclones, or Chicago Cubs-- variations on "Cubs Win" being a favorite theme. Some notable examples: CUBSWIN (got there first, apparently), CU85W1N (for the numerically inclined), CUBSWN (ambiguous), CUBSWYN (a baseball-obsessed medieval bishop?).

Then there are the pop-culture references, such as GRYJEDI (I'm assuming this stands for Gary Jedi) and KANG (cue myself and two coworkers pointing and shouting "KANG" in unison, then separately shouting "from Marvel," "from The Simpsons," and "from Star Trek" in non-unison)

And then there are the "clever" ones, my favorite so far being "OUDODOU."

But the peak of irony was from today, when I got stuck behind a truck on the highway, going at least fifteen miles under the speed limit, with a license plate reading "MOVE4WD."

Cranky Calico started going nuts at the back door. I got up, walked back there, saw two pairs of fuzzy eyes, and there, standing on our back deck, were two young raccoons, standing on their hind legs, front paws and noses pressed against the glass, looking at me pleadingly and with no concern for the cat.

Yeah, "wildlife" indeed.

I wonder whether there's ever been an evening where that "cute twosome" trick didn't get them some food...

Well, feh. The Celica wasn't quite ready in time.

We had the first rain of the season last night, which means that today's going to be an idiot demolition derby on the freeways, and Impus Minor's going to be joining them in the "I can skid on a wet piece of bubble gum" Prius. Fortunately, he's such a cautious driver I think he'll be fine. Unfortunately, he'll have to deal with the rest of the world and plan at least an extra half hour to get to school.

For those who don't know how car service in major metropolitan areas works, there's a list of standard labor times. For example, "Replacing a strut should take 3 hours."

From what I've heard, a rural mechanic may do it in 90 minutes and they'll charge you for 90 minutes. An urban mechanic will charge you 3 hours, whether it takes them 90 minutes, 3 hours, or 10 hours.

So, the listed labor on the Celica's estimate is 40 hours, meaning it won't be ready until Friday. But the work seemed extremely easy for an older car where everything is designed to be accessible and easy to repair, so I'm hoping they can pull it in a bit.

Time will tell...

Shadow Warrior 3 finished...

It's not a bad game. But it veers between very entertaining and dynamic to frustrating on a moment's notice. It is also feels like a step down in certain areas from the previous Shadow Warriors—especially in area of barebone character upgrades, compared to second game.

Weapons feel sort an uninspired. I really feel there is a lot of wasted upgrading potential. Platforming feels better than in Doom Eternal (a game very similar in many ways) though still has occasional issues with dying due to disorientation in air and not knowing where should you jump (which might be intentional) to grapple points glitching and not highlighting or even outright failing to appear (which likely isn't). The game is very-very short. The first Shadow Warrior (well, the 2013 one, I haven't really played the first—original one), which was similarly linear game, took me 22 hours while this one was mere 9 hours and I had to repeat a lot of sequences and arenas due to dying...

The music is great, I am happy that I paid one złoty less* to get the version with OST that I can download from Steam (which I am not really likely to actually do, unless in the future I get a decent phone/tablet to pair with portable speakers and use for a session or two).

The bright point is Zilla, which is much more fun than in the previous game, in his role of cranky old straight, who nevertheless snips a rather caustic barb or two at the goofy main character (which feels somehow even more goofy than in the previous games, though it might be him dealing with destroying the world).

I don't like the design of most demons, being more surrealistic than monstrous like in the past games... Though again, the way Lo Wang perceives them, might be the sign of his growing mental breakdown over the world thing.

I ended switching the difficulty for both of the bosses to Easy, after multiple tries. I found them too fast and very tedious at the same time.

*yes, the Definitive Edition that included OST costed 35.99 (80% off), while the standard one was 36.99 (again, 80% off).

Alsoalso, inquiring barbarians want to know: has anyone printed tights in the reconstructed patterns for ancient statues of Thracians in national dress? Several of my friends and I would be on that like a ferocious cavalcade riding down some poor schlubs intruding on our territories. :)
