The fact that dealerships can make significant amounts of profit by upselling interest rates (as in, the bank approves you for a loan at 4%, but the dealership tells it's 6%, you sign the papers, and the dealership gets to keep the extra 2%) is one reason a former car dealer suggests you imply that you will finance, even if you are planning to pay cash. If they think they can make an extra $2500 off you by upselling your interest rate, they may be willing to knock $2000 off the price. Then, once a final price is agreed upon, you say "Know what, I think I'll just pay cash". He also suggested that when the finance manager says "Great news! I got the bank to approve you for only 6%!", that you say "Can I see the approval form?". They don't have to show it to you, but if they refuse it suggests that they may be trying to rip you off.

Yeah, I've heard exactly the same thing -- dealerships love financing for the reasons you mention, plus they can add thousands of dollars to the cost of the car with "rust-proof coatings" and "fabric protection" and easily hide it in the monthly cost. Geez, when we were leasing the Echo the entire conversation was, "Well, how much do you want to pay a month?"

He wasn't amused by my consistent response of "$50. Now what will you actually let me pay?"

But when we're walking in ready to pay MSRP, it's amazingly annoying we still can't buy the car. Just like my McRib example: "Well, we know the menu says $3.69, but *YOU* have to pay $4.09 because you're paying in full up front."

And 4%? 6%? It really has been a while. My friends were living in Sacramento and getting car dealership loan offers and routinely seeing interest rates in the 20s.

EDIT: To clarify, their fax number was one digit off of a car dealership's finance office, so they were getting contracts sent from the dealership for financial approval, and the loan rates ran from 12% up to 30%.

20%+ on a car loan?! I was just throwing out random numbers, but when I bought my car (used) about 7 years ago, I think my rate was around 3.25%. And I know a local credit union is advertising a rate (2018 or newer, no longer than 75 months, 730+ credit score) of 2.2%. The highest rate on their website (2015 or older, 64-75 months, no credit score requirement listed) is 6.2%.

When I got into the finance office, and they started going over all the extras, I just said "I'd like to see the details on the extended warranty, but just scratch off everything else". And the finance manager handed me a brochure for the warranty, took her pen and x'd out everything else on the page, and gave me a few minutes to read the details on the warranty. When I said "No, thank you" to the warranty, she nodded, crossed it out, and said "If you change your mind, you can always call us and we can set it up." No pressure, no problem.

You sure there wasn't a second pair of boots inside the first?

Possibly a pocket plane, or similar extradimensional space. That might explain the price.

Has anyone seen the new video for Sabaton's "Race to the Sea"?

I watched it last night and I couldn't stop laughing, not because it was funny in the way that some Foo Fighters videos are funny, but because they looked like they were imitating Instagram models doing the "mermaid hair flip".
Over and over.

(1) Looks like you went through a bank, not dealer financing. Your example of the dealer getting 4% from the bank and then charging 6% is likely significantly off. The dealer gets 4% from the bank and then charges 14%.

(2) New cars vs. used cars is a different world. Plus, the fact that your dealer was willing to remove all the extra charges without a two-hour argument means you were *gasp* dealing with a far more honest dealer than I've ever met.

(3) The rate depends on your credit rating. The people who finance through dealerships are typically people who can't finance through banks. Remember the whole thing on, "It's expensive to be poor?" The poorer you are, the lower your credit rating, the higher your interest rate. So yes, poor people pay more for the same item, especially when it comes to cars.

EDIT: And also don't forget this was in the 90s, far before the Fed reduced interest rates to essentially 0 for a prolonged period. I'd guess you can knock 7% off all my numbers just from that.

1. The dealer arranged the financing through a local credit union (the same credit union whose rates I mentioned earlier). If you were talking about a Buy Here, Pay Here type dealer, then, yeah, rates are going to be much higher.

2. Yeah, they have a pretty good reputation. Or did, anyways. I assume they still do.
3. Also, yeah. My credit score was 805. So...pretty good.

Not sure why, but Sabaton has never grabbed me. Granted, I haven't tried listening to them in a couple years, so I should probably give them another shot.

Back from adulting for today.

I had to go to the power company to clear up the mess they made with the prognosed usage (and corresponding bills) that I made in December because of the breaking water heater (just two days before it finally broke, reducing my usage to 60-something kW-hours instead of planned goal of 90 kWh per month.

The lady in the physical customer service took some 20 minutes trying to understand and undo the errors someone did when proceeding my prognosis.

It should be cleared by now, and I should have excess balance for a few months.

Until the late May, early June when the new bill arrive based on prognosis from the last year when the water heater was using more than it should.

On the other hand, there is some chance that I will have a new water heater by then.

We got top-of-the-line Sabaton tickets for their concert here in April(?), including a $60 VIP room with its own bar (meh) and bathroom (hooray!).

And even with the top-level tickets and VIP room, they were still cheaper than general admission tickets for any "big name" bands.

Not naming names, but when a friend at another company mentions that their executive leadership is being compared to Zap Brannigan and Prince Farquaad in the public All Hands chat, then maybe, just maybe, that company has an employee morale issue...

LOLOL. OK. THIS should be "fun". A recruiter from a rival global megacorporation finally got back to me. With a laundry list of, "These are our corporate ideals, and this is our employee philosophy, and this is how you should approach all of our interview questions, and here's the line to the Kool-Aid."

I'm so tempted to just blow them off and say, "Yeah, I'm already in moronic acronym Hell, thanks," but I'll be polite, fill out their questionnaire, do the 90-minute interview if they're willing to do it after seeing my responses, and then move on, feeling better about my current job.

Work this afternoon is hard. It's a holiday in India, so those team members are out. The rest of that team took today off as well. My manager took the day off. So it's me and one other guy, and he's already out for the day.

Should I really be doing anything?

And is it a bad sign that my response to the megacorporate recruiter stunned him into silence?
"I refuse to move, and plan to work from home forever. And here's my current salary, so at a 10% raise this is the minimum I'd consider to change jobs."

Brutal, but honest. I'd rather not waste their time. Their whole, "You must drink the corporate Kool-Aid," in their initial email to me sent up so many red flags that I'm looking for a reasonable exit strategy already.

I love "teenagers".

NobodysHome: Hey, Impus Major! For tonight's play at DVC we figure we'll drive out there and do dinner in Pleasant Hill. Can you recommend a place for us to eat, or should we look one up?
Impus Major: The only places I know are the food court at the mall and In-n-Out Burger. You should probably look something up.

Ah, to be of an age when a mall food court was "good enough".

You mean 42?

There is a nice food place that serves more-or-less East Asian food by weight (I think it is $10-12 per kilogram) some 20 minutes by bus (or 45 minutes walk if I want to walk—I often come back on foot if the weather is nice, in fact). They are 50% off after 8 pm and my nearest cinema is nearby.

I have to say I prefer Prince Farquaad's Polish voice...

While I generally avoid Polish dubbings, Shrek was a real masterpiece in that matter, involving some of the best Polish actors, and rewriting a lot of jokes within the cultural context of Polish pop-culture, the actor's past roles (Donkey was voiced by one of the best Polish comedic actors, and got some references to his old roles, his comedy style is quite different from Eddie's one) and fairy tales.

True story! My character for Kingmaker was a lawful neutral halfling cavalier named Zap Bramblethorn. During the tournament he got blackout drunk (-4 penalty instead of usual -2) and still won the joust.

It was probably the most 20s I've ever rolled in a row.

The guy actually got back to me with an extremely enthusiastic response. I think he checked up the food chain, and someone said, "We've got a grognard, reel him in!"

If they're happy giving me a 10% raise as I ignore their"corporate values" and just give them their money's worth, then it's a job worth pursuing.

We'll see how the next interview goes, but it's obvious someone in the field looked at my resume. So now it's just measuring fit.

Indeed, people just don't understand exactly why scientists perform these experiments.

On a slightly brighter note, I was watching a YouTube video about a review of an old board game that I used to play: CD Adventure, Search for the Lost City! Grumble. I am on laptop now. The other computer is acting weirdly unable to enter some websites while others work fine.

I reset the router and flushed dns. Is the time to do a full antivirus scan?

Ok, seems the dns flushing helped.

And it sounds like the laundry is finished. Now I need to hang it to dry.

BTW: connection issue happened just in the right time to prevent me from correcting a typo in my post in editing time window.

A silly thought that comes and goes to my mind from time to time...

If I scrapped windows from the laptop and installed Linux would the laptop work faster than it does now? It's over eight years old now.

Of course it would involve doing work that I am too lazy to do, like finding the right suitable ready made Linux compilation (or however it is called), learning how to put it on the laptop (making an installation usb flash drive, I guess? does my laptop support booting from a flash drive? I have no idea). Possibly learn how to make a boot selector between Linux and windows to avoid losing windows...
