Apparently there is no 29 mm simple wrench and 30 mm (which I found in basement) is too large for those nuts.

EDIT: There is 25×28 that I bought yesterday. There is 30×32 that I found in the basement. I am even looking on sets of wrenches and there is no 26 nor 29 (26×29 would fit the size progression)...

Oh, I know THAT pain. I have an old, reliable wrench set with both Imperial and metric measures... except for reasons I cannot comprehend it's missing a 14mm wrench.

So of course, everything I run into that I need to assemble/disassemble uses 14mm nuts.

Yes. Thats how things go in this universe

Meh. NH wins, I might be calling plumber to replace those damned taps.

Hopefully it won't exceed the money that my friend cut down from the price of the computer when I finally paid him a week or two ago.

Unless the guy on the phone tells me some really insane price from the start.

Aaand, the guy doesn't have time. Ah, whelp. I am not sure if I can find anyone else today :/

And the guy called back, he can be later today.

He might have been napping when I called at first because his voice sounded more coherent. Apparently, his wife took the car so he has to wait for her to return.

A math problem I can’t figure.

It’s a three dimensional puzzle and I just don’t have the head space.

I’m working out the dimensions of a sailing ship made of flat planes (yes, I know, I can’t even begin to hope to do the curved ones), but an stymied when you get to the front angles. Seems like it should be obvious, but just... isn’t.

Base is (and thus sides are) 130 ft long, deck is 205 ft long, 45 ft. from deck to base, and figuring out the intersection point of the triangles created by the two narrowing elements just baffles the daylights out of me in what seems like it should be easy-to-grasp triangles. I’m probably overlooking something obvious, but at this point outside of building a physical model, I’m stumped.

Weird.

I can't picture what you're describing, but it sounds like you need the Law of Cosines, an extension of the Pythagorean Theorem:

For ANY triangle with sides A, B, C, and corresponding angles a, b, c:
C^2 = A^2 + B^2 - 2AB cos c

Thus, if you have the lengths of the three sides, you can calculate the angle.

The lack of picturing it is a problem.

I know it should be incredibly straight forward to get t he length of most of the sides, but it’s not for me.

Basically, the top-down view of the ship is a rectangle (or at least two parallel lines) 30 ft. apart. The front (prow) of the ship and the back of the ship are both triangles, but if differing sizes (the front being longer and narrower than the back). The bottom (keel) of the ship is shorter than the deck. This is all relatively standard for boats.

My difficulty lies in finding the spacing necessary such that both front and back portions “seal” (that is, so that there are no gaps) - I thiiiiink they should all be triangles (two sets of flat equivalent triangles), but I’m just not sure if that susses out in 3D space. My imagination begins to break down and wanders off to various other nonsense when I try to rotate the 3D version of the model and even look at the shape of the planes I’m trying to figure. Stupid imagination. Always being interrupted by distractions!

All I need is a flat plane, but as it’s part of a larger 3D structure, I’m trying (and failing) to model that stuff in my head. Without a proper model, I can’t know how large the area of the plane is (presumptively a triangle, but not with perfect certainty).

It’s a triviality, ultimately - it’s part of pricing stuff for a game - but it’s funny how “nope” my brain is for figuring out that particular aspect of the model.

There was a rather ominous moment, when an ancient 1/2" to 3/4" adapter broke and there was non-zero chance that a pipe would need to be replaced. A pipe embedded in the wall...

Thankfully, the plumber managed to unscrew the broken part and replace it with a new one (which he wasn't sure if he had in his car in the first place).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The other tap was replaced smoothly and quickly - but it had its adapters replaced five years ago, so it wasn't a challenge in the first place.

I might have saved money if I started with that one. Or might screw it (wrong).

On the one hand, I understand that in the current economic climate, gig organizations (such as construction companies) want to get in as many hours as they can as quickly as they can to keep their employees afloat. And yes, Albany's noise ordinance allows construction and destruction from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Saturday, and 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Sundays.

But there's nothing quite like having a concrete saw start screaming into the sidewalk right across the street at 8:00 am sharp on a Saturday.

Seriously, guys? You couldn't think of anything else you could do for an hour or two on a Saturday morning? You had to start with the concrete saw?

(I ask because this construction project has been going on for longer than our eternal bathroom -- I think it started in early-to-mid December, so it's not like they're on hard deadlines to get xxx done by yyy am on a certain day.)

EDIT: And yesterday I pointed out to my contractor that he was going to end up taking 10 weeks to finish my bathroom. He thought for a moment, then responded, "Yeah, that's way too long! It'd be way better if I were allowed to have an assistant in here. I'd cut my time by a factor of 3."

The problem is that in a 48 square foot bathroom, there really is no COVID safety other than one worker at a time. (And it was THEIR decision to do the one-worker thing, not mine.)

EDIT 2: And on the mildly political front, he's a great example of why I have so little patience for anti-maskers. He's a COVID-denier ("It's just a media hoax"), but since I wear a mask, he puts on a mask. Since the city requires COVID measures, he adheres to COVID measures. "I don't believe in this and I don't agree with you, but since you're more comfortable if I do this I'll go ahead and do it because it's a trivial inconvenience for me. And I'll follow the city's rules because I like being licensed."

If anything, that’s an object lesson to demonstrate that encouraging people to do the right thing in a pandemic is not nearly as effective as having actual rules in place. There are too many people who will only wear a mask if there is a mandate enforcing it. This is probably a significant overlap with people who will only refrain from eating in restaurants or hanging out at bars if they are actually prevented from doing so.

Bittersweet moment: One of the older gay couples down the street recently adopted a baby. They're absolutely adorable, wheeling the stroller together every day, rain or shine.

But...

...I think about the fact that they waited until they were in their 60s to adopt, and I think about the fact that they're both men, yet their child won't graduate from high school until they're 80, which for men is no sure thing.

The child's going to grow up in an amazing, loving environment in an amazing, welcoming neighborhood. But the child also has a significant chance of being an orphan before they turn 18.

This is the problem with overthinking things...

EDIT: Of course, I haven't been rude enough to ask,"Hey, guys! Did you adopt or did one of your nieces or nephews go bad so you're looking after someone else's kid?"
It's possible that it's a temporary situation, but they've had the infant for several months now, so whatever it is, it's fairly long-term.

Sweden's such a beautiful example of this. "Oh, no! We're not going to put any restrictions in place! Our people are wise enough to protect themselves if we give them all of the relevant information...

...what's that? We have the highest death rate in all of the Nordic countries?!?!? What the heck happened?!?!?!?"

They're held up as both a shining example of letting people do their own thing (their death rate is lower than a lot of countries that put restrictions in place) and a shining example of what goes wrong if you do (other than WTF Belgium, they're near the bottom for northern Europe).

EDIT: Linky if people want it.

Okay, this is cool.

We got to my mother-in-law's house for the first time in a week and a half to discover water pouring from the laundry area in the detached garage. She hasn't gone out of her front door in a week so she didn't know.

WW tried calling his mom's plumber and got an automated message that they were full up well into March. He asked her if she had the special key for the shut-off valve down by the street. She had no idea where it was (she said, "Call your father and ask; he's the last one to use it" even though they divorced in the 1980s). So she called one of her neighbors, who said they had a water key and would come over.

But *that* neighbor called another neighbor who just happens to be a plumber, who, when he heard it was for Ms. P, brought his tools and came right over. So it's being fixed at this very moment.

Speaking of plumbers...

the only time my mother ever beat me in a game of Trivial Pursuit, she asked me this question for my orange (Sports) wedge: "Who are A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti?"

I said, "Plumbers?"
(This was before Nintendo; Mario and Luigi did not exist yet.)

My high school history teacher/basketball coach would have punished me for not knowing that one. He's a HUGE A.J. Foyt fan. And he lets you know it.

Just hit a big wall with Ms. P.

Probably TMI:
We sat down for "the big budget meeting" about us moving in this summer.
I offered my proposal, which was for us to take over paying household bills (utilities, internet, etc.) and also paying a set amount per month in "rent", which would go toward paying the annual property taxes, insurance, and maintenance/upkeep. Considering the fact that we will be paying more money for more headache and less autonomy, I think my offer was very generous.

She, however, had thought that "combining households" meant "combining absolutely all personal finances" and was asking me a lot of questions that were none of her business. Which, to make it clear, I absolutely did NOT say.

I was very, very polite, but firm.
She was miffed and reserved.
There was a lot of protracted silence, punctuated by an occasional "hmmmm".

She said, "But that means I'm going to be relying on you financially". Which she was *anyway*, since the pandemic forced her to finally retire from her home teaching (mostly Musikgarten, with a little Montessori consulting for parents and small schools). Her other choice is to sell the house and move into a small apartment. Absolutely NONE of which I said, because that would have been unpardonably rude.

So, once again, I end up being the bad guy.

You handled that far better than I would have.

About around circa 12 years ago, my mother-in-law wanted me to completely rearrange our house for her 2-week stay. I offered to put an air mattress in the garage as a counter-proposal.

Edit: That "2 week stay" also morphed into 6 weeks.

I stand corrected and pleasantly surprised -- my gas bill from November through February was only $320, and they gave me only $150 credit. It's still darned generous of them, but it wasn't $700 generous.

I didn't think I was that much of an energy hog, but it's nice to confirm.

(The reason the $700 figure arose was because they recalculated all of 2020 based on the bad meter so the initial communication showed $870 in gas. But that was for the entire year, not the period in question. Since the lion's share of our gas use is November-February, the $870 seemed high, but not impossible.)
