So it's pretty sad.

I've been tasked with finding examples of excellent online training that I can provide to our division heads to help them rebuild our own inscrutable training web site into something navigable.

And I'm very quickly learning that nobody in the software industry seems to know anything about creating a navigable training site.

No, I don't want to have to select a role, or scroll through 223 different offerings trying to figure out which one applies to me. I want to be able to type a search term into a search box (for example, "JavaScript") and get the relevant training offerings returned to me. It's not rocket science. w3schools does it just fine, as does Khan Academy.

Yet the moment you move to enterprise-level software (which is where I'm supposed to be looking), ALL of the companies are horrifically incompetent at making a navigable web site.

What the heck, people?

Freehold, my only regret with your venting is that I'm not in a position to help.

You can always move to Wisconsin and become a plumbing god but then you'd have to leave CH and NYC behind.

An actual conversation in my classroom today...
Kindergartner: "Ms. LM, I'm just tired and bored."
Me: "Are you Bruce Springsteen?"
Kinder: "Huh? No. Why?"
Me: "Bruce Springsteen wrote a famous rock song called Dancing in the Dark, in which he sang, I'm just tired and bored with myself. When you're Bruce Springsteen, you can get away with it. If you are not Bruce Springsteen, I'm happy to help you with some work choices."
Kinder: "You're weird, Ms. LM."

I will not k--l my cat! I will not k--l my cat! Dratted cat ate through my monitor's power cord. Now I will have to order a replacement from the maker of the monitor.

A proprietary cord? Those suck. And if you leave the monitor on, the next time it chews through the cord you might not have to worry about killing the cat. The monitor might do it for you.

(1) I haven't seen a monitor in at least 10 years that didn't take a standard power cord. Want me to mail you 5 or 6?

(2) I have to give it to this IT guy, he really knows his stuff. After making me update my firmware and my BIOS and still having the issue, he swore it had to be my ISP. He said instead of testing on my Mac I should try another Windows 10 machine. Yep. Exact same symptoms. I'll be abusing my router tomorrow morning while everyone's asleep, since no one likes firmware updates while they're gaming.

About to go home. Good night, everyone.

Monitors or power cords? Sadly a standard power cord plugs into the ac to dc converter block.

I was supposed to go to PaizoCon this year. I don't get to cons often, but when I do I like the gaming, and I like to hear from designers, etc. Plus, it's always fun to see Paizo folks.

All the online cons I've been doing this year have been mostly about the gaming, but there have been a few panel discussions that have piqued my interest.

We were planning on going to paizocon again this year (we went one time before in 2017).

It was just so relaxed. Everyone there to do some gaming, talk gaming, hang out, paint some minis, get tormented by cosmo. Do the silly quizzes. It was real cool.
I was there in 2017! And I remember there being a young woman from the Netherlands in one of the games I was playing. I wonder if we actually gamed together?
There certainly were no other dutch people, except for MrT, and he is not young. Or a woman. So it must have been me! Was it at MrSlankie's game? With Pirate Rob and the gang?

I wish I could remember!

That game doesn’t ring a bell. Were you in the Leshy game run by badger/Mike Welham?

Yes! I was in the Leshy game! I even have a picture of it!

Dammit, and I have only meet Gorbacz. Whom I will see next weekend by the way.

Y'know what's really refreshing?

To get an IT guy on the phone, have him talk to you for two minutes, and then have him just say, "Yeah, OK. You know the drill. Go ahead and run the manufacturer's update software to update your BIOS and firmware drivers and let me know if that doesn't fix things."

In other words, "I have spoken with you and determined that you have a brain, and I am therefore trusting you to take care of this on your own and then let me know how it goes. Thanks for saving me time."

Yeah, I've run a few BIOS updates in my lifetime, dating back to the old, "Put it on a 3.5" floppy and boot from the floppy" days..

Yeah. That is my MO as well. There are a few users I trust to do things and I'll give them free reign.

Other people not so much.

I don't think I have ever dared to run BIOS update. Screwing up motherboard if something goes wrong wasn't really an option for me as I rarely had capacity to replace it.

I don't think I've ever seen a monitor with a power brick. But I haven’t had a desktop for like 10 years.

I worked straight through Spring Break in March to prepare for Home Learning. I got no summer break because of committee work to prepare the Covid mitigation plan for our school.
All I have to do next week is write my progress reports for next month's parent teacher conferences.

FYIF!

There is something frustrating about having a map of a greenway system that shows all sorts of ways to get from where I am or where I am likely to be to one of my long bike paths only to dig further and see that every branch that gets me from A to B has a closure on it. And that those closures will be until mid to late 2021.

Grumble.

https://raleighnc.gov/home/content/PRecDesignDevelop/Articles/GreenwayRepai rs.html#paragraph--259031

In less grumblesome news, online gaming, while not a patch on the real thing, does scratch the itch somewhat.

We fell down the hole in Harrowstone and explored. Not sure if anyone still needs to play Carrion Crown, but will avoid further commentary.

Not sold on all the 2E mechanics yet, but they don't get in the way of fun (at least as far as I can tell yet).

Need to finish up my Black Company world arc, then can run plaguestone.

And after Plaguestone, will open floor to discussion by my group as to what, if anything, i should run. Given my preference for DF terrain, I imagine it will be home-brew to some extent. So few of the AP are DF friendly.

That reminds me. Need to check if vorpal board is up and out of beta yet.

We all cope in different ways. FH, I've pulled up a therapy couch here on these forums, and you've all been very gracious, letting me rant about my personal life. You deserve no less from any of us.

The company I work for does virtual pulse checks of the business. Currently I'm listening to a talk from a psychologist speaking to the company about dealing with the stress and anxiety of the business so far this calendar year. Her first key takeaway is when stress and anxiety increases, we need to intentionally increase connection.

Freehold, if this is your default community for those connections then its a good thing you're decompressing here.

Now, on a lighter note, a buddy of mine is a teacher for middle school and he's going to be stuck on hours of virtual parent conferences next week. For those of you in this thread that are facing the same challenge, I work for a company that sells leg bags and other uro devices, just in case bathroom breaks won't be an option.

Just throwing that out there.

I'm on a roll now.

Is that your final answer?

My mystery 5-minute disconnect is no longer a mystery, and I have to give credit where credit is due:
- An unbelievably diligent IT support person
- A user willing to try everything to see what worked, and to communicate clearly with said IT person
- Cisco for continuing to produce the most bug-ridden, incompetently-made software and hardware known to man (outside of Adobe Flash)

After I pointed out that my Mac was running rock solid and both my Windows 10 machines had the 5-minute bug, the IT guy immediately recognized a known issue between Cisco VPN and Windows 10 IPv6. He had me disable IPv6 on my laptop and voila! Everything's running perfectly.

Thanks, Cisco, for burning 4 hours of my life! Ah, well, at least they were paid hours. That's something!

Wait, you can get banned from these forums? I didn't even know that was a thing. I REALLY gotta step up my game.

Grand Lodge

I backed off from my usual bad behavior. Been walking a line since then, but I've had a warning before. I don't recall if I had an actual timeout yet, but I don't think so. Mostly now I avoid getting too out of line so I don't interrupt my PbPs.

Silver Crusade

I’ve never been banned, or even gotten a warning, and that’s saying something because back in the day I liked to push buttons. I was also responsible for this thread.

Edit: Reference point

And a post where I claimed Dick Cheney had been hired by Paizo (which Lisa Stephens actually replied to).
