I was fully dressed for the following conversation with my daughter earlier today...
Me: Hermione, before you speak, I'd like you to think, "Is this essential?"
Hermione: But MOM! If human beings only said what was actually essential, they'd hardly ever talk!

I was going to come in here and rant:
Right now I'm still at work, 4 hours after I was meant to log off, trying to fix issues that I and my team identified weeks before the customer that is now booked for an angry meeting at 10 am tomorrow morning converted to our new system from our old.

I was going to rant... but then I remembered LM upthread. It's a low moment for me right now; the ahole in my brain is pretty f-ing loud. But LM went for a run.

I can't... we can't let the crap this quarantine is heaping on us win. Its not much, but I just did the first crunches I've done in months. I'm fat, and tired, and there's an ache in my body that I don't ever remember having before.

But, I did something. And tomorrow I'll do something else. And eventually, somewhere down the road, I'll be doing whatever because I want to, not because I have to.

Thanks again LM and all of you for just, I don't know... being human. Freehold, I really hope your team appreciates the genuine care and work you're putting out there for them and as you look out into the universe I hope that karma comes back to you seven-fold.

Now, back to the FaWtL thread already in progress.

Early voting started today here, at the 3-weeks-to-election-day mark, and I probably should have gone by because I got off work early today, but I forgot that it was open. Stupid me.

I'll definitely be swinging by sometime later this week though. Probably Friday, because I have a doctor appointment that day anyway so I'll be in the area.

I'll vote on election day.

First step is built.

Each of the two steps are about fifteen feet long with two different angles so it's actually more impressive then it sounds, especially because I had to install a U-Base base block underneath the step.

And I did it all myself as co-worker has been focused on digging trenches for some reason.

About to go home. Good night, everyone.

Is it because he is a dwarf, and he is digging a hole?

My favorite childhood memory is building sand castles with my grandpa. That all stopped when Mom hid the urn from me.

I used to sell alarm systems door-to-door. I was really good at it. If no one was home, I'd just leave a brochure on the kitchen table.

The other day, my blind friend picked up a piece of sand paper and said "How am I supposed to read this? The font is so small!"

For me, the same as always. I stay away from the stores.

Same here I don't do black Friday shopping but I'm curious are they going to just cancel it, will some places do so and other not, will they continue as always, Will Godzilla Show up half way through? 2020 is a roller coaster man.

Oh, they're not gonna cancel it. Why would they? It's not like there's any reason why masses of people shouldn't be shoved together in confined places! I'm sure that the various stores will announce all kinds of new rules, regulations, stipulations, whatever in order to ensure that people keep proper distances and whatnot. And I'm also 11,000% positive that it won't matter, and people will push, shove, punch, kick, bite, and trample each other to save on a slow cooker that they could buy right now for $30, but can get for $25 on Black Friday.

No, no, no! The price is $24.99 NOT $25!

Doom wouldn't expect that one to be competent enough to do a simple task such as "Open a cage" let alone the sort of cage your in.

Question for Nobody in particular.

When frying meat (or whatever) in a frying pan, is there any trick that helps turn the meat pieces to the other side easily, or do I need to keep turning individual pieces, like a (fire-using) animal?

So you're asking the wrong guy, because I'm the kind of guy who considers cooking a form of Zen art, so I don't mind spending 3.5 hours making a curry just so I can use all-fresh ingredients and make sure that every step is done properly.

So I wouldn't want to flip all the pieces at once because each piece cooks at its own individual pace.

For fairly uniform meat (such as beaten chicken breasts for katsu) where the cooking time is pretty even, I use a large metal spatula, but even then I do one breast at a time. When I'm browning meatballs for the spaghetti I use tongs and lovingly individually flip each one.

I'm a weirdo.

Im hungry now.

As I've said before, I don't idle well, and this week is now nothing but "sit around and wait":
- I've wrapped up my development for our 4th-quarter release, so I have no "real" work for the next 8 days
- I've finished the paperwork on the refi, so now I have to wait for the credit union to finish whatever the heck it is they're doing
- I've prepared the house for the bathroom remodel, so now I'm waiting for the contractors to show up
- I've voted, so now I'm waiting for the election to be over and done with
- And I'm sure there are many more

I just asked my manager for Friday off, not because I need the break to relax, but because sitting at my work computer for 8 hours with no work to do seems like tedium incarnate.

Ah, well, she's known me for 18 years now. She'll probably find something interesting for me to do...

I've never held a job anywhere near that long. My record is 9 years, at the job I just left so I could move to KS. Before that was 3, from 2006-9 and lost because the office I was working at closes when the AZ economy took a nosedive.

Neither had Nobody, if I remember correctly. As far as I recall, they know each other from previous work.

Nope. This really is 16 years (not 18) at a single job.

In June of 2000 I resigned from a tenure-track teaching position with no employment prospects because of the toxicity of the department. Within 2 weeks a tech company had picked me up as a technical trainer. From June of 2000 to roughly March of 2003 I enjoyed the best job I've ever had, until the most incompetent manager I've ever seen took over our department, drove us from a 43% profit margin to a 28% loss in a single quarter, and we all got laid off. I spent an amazingly enjoyable year as a contractor from 2003-2004, where I didn't make much money but I got to spend HUGE amounts of time with Impus Major as a toddler, then in May of 2004 a former co-worker from the layoff recommended me for my current job.

I got hired in June of 2004, and I've been at the same job ever since, with the same manager.

We did get acquired by Global Megacorporation in 2006, but we're still doing roughly the same work we were before. I just don't get to teach any more, which is sadness. But a stable job that lets me work from home 100% of the time and that pays the bills? That's priceless.
