I couldn't tell ya which is better tactic honestly. besides as you know giving advice is usually not helpful because we can't truly put ourselves in someone else shoes.

I can wish you the fortitude and willpower to hang in their tho. (I couldn't think of a reflex save. )

Oh their was the reflex save.

Since my mom passed away I only still talk to my dad, of course that's because he's the only one who will communicate outside of Facebook so there's that.

The General talks to her parents but her mom is a huge fan of gossip and strife in the family and it's only gotten worse in her old age so it's difficult talking to them.

The rest of her family considers themselves outlaw Nascar nationals so they cut us off when she got a job in government. Literally as soon as we walk in the door for holidays everyone stops talking and switches to awkward small talk, as if we care about the illegal motorcycle or moonshine still in the garage.

Funny enough, because the General's family is on Facebook, they know more about the current happenings of my family then I do. So, part of the awkward small talk is gossip about my family, but it's all hints and spoiler warnings "Have you talked to your older brother recently?" "No" "Oh, well was just looking at his Facebook page.." "Awesome!" I walk away.

Does anyone else see more ads on their news app than real articles? Or trash like "her bikini got her thrown out - click here to see!"

I need a recommendation for something free that gives actual news. Google got shifty in the last year.

For free, less-biased actual news, I tend to go with bbc.com/news or Reuters.

I also like Politico and the Guardian, but they do skew left and are less objective.

But, yeah, no paywall news is largely crap. (Looking at you, cnn and HuffPo).

The BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk (the British version is MUCH better than the U.S. version)

Reuters: http://www.reuters.com. Boring and dry, but news.

AP News: http://apnews.com. Similar to Reuters.

Al Jazeera: http://www.aljazeera.com. They're very opinionated, but clearly separate their opinions from their news. But the news is mostly Africa and Asia, but those continents matter, too.

I use Feedly, a very nice free RSS reader that many Google Reader users switched to when Google Reader closed.

You can curate your own selection of newspapers, blogs, websites, etc.

Unfortunately, Reuters shut down its RSS feed a few months ago, so I have to visit Reuters World News using a separate bookmark for the best international coverage, but my CBC and BBC feeds do a pretty good job of non-US coverage.

I've curated about 100 sources and get a well-rounded selection of factual information for my patience.

How do you manage to get to the UK BBC site from your browser? Whenever I tried to type it in that way, it automatically directed me to the US version of the site until I eventually just gave up.

Lisamarlene (and the BBC's web site) is right -- that's still getting redirected to BBC.com.

I'm interested in their reasons. "Rights restrictions mean that some content, mainly video, cannot be shown outside the UK."

I'd love to bring in a good old British barrister, wig and all, to tell us what's going on. Limey, any barrister friends?

I had to apologize for something I didn't do and kiss ass so my daughter isn't homeless.

The second we leave, my daughter has one grandmother only. This b$%!* is cut off. No visits. No phone calls. No photos shared online. Letters will be burned unopened.

I'm even changing my will to stipulate under no circumstances can she get custody ever.

I'm not letting her poison my kid with her manipulation and deceit.

I'd call her bluff, even if she does throw you out you're probably better off on the streets.

Besides, don't they have churches on every corner in Florida, surely they'd love to charity the s#!~ out of a homeless couple and their adorable daughter during such trying times.

Of course, you do what's best for you and your family.

I think that UK viewers don't see (at least that many) ads, because BBC is funded from UK tv/radio license fees and have legal restrictions on the number/timing of ads - for example Polish ruling party politicial propaganda tube public television is restricted that way.

None, I'm afraid, but my guess is that it has something to do with GDPR legislation (same reason why I can't access some US news sites)

Not your lawyer, this is not legal advice blah blah

Pretty simple- i make a video of some news worthy item. I license bbc to use it for 4$ in the uk. I then license fox news to use it in the us for $10. I then license al jazeera to carry it in the rest of the world for $50.

Numbers dont really matter. What matters is i own the video. I only gave the bbc the right to use in the uk. If they show it outside the uk they violated the contract and i get to punish them.

I am allowed to put geographic, specific markets, time or other restrictions on how people can use my video (property).

Same applies to textual material.

There have been numerous squabbles about digital video rights.

Many early contracts only contemplated broadcast television distribution and reruns of the same.

Along comes VHS/BETA/DVD etc. Can the studios put that material in these formats or do they need to acquire this right from the owners again?

Another revolution along same lines when it started moving to the web.

There are comparable parallels in the news media world where authors published in newspapers, and when the newspapers went to put their archives online, they found they did not have the rights from the authors to republish in this new format.

Yes, there is a bit of 'but common sense says' but such common sense is generally outweighed by our belief that authors/content creators should be able to control their content.

And we are left with the words of the actual contract - if something new comes along which was not prognosticated in the contract, additional compensation may be required to get these newly created rights - or higher dollars are paid up front for "all rights" to "all media, presently known or available in the future" and so on.

Also Nyarlthotep: being manipulated is never easy. KNOWING someone is attempting to manipulate you and then having to play along for your child is unconscionable. I'm sorry that's happening.

I hope you're doing ok today. No one who knowingly takes actions to threaten the well-being of a child, let alone their own granddaughter, is worth enduring any longer than we have to.

Please don't drink too much though.

I'm not saying this to wag my finger. I'm saying this as a person who, shamefully, was dealing with stress and manipulation from his ex, got drunk, got behind the wheel of his car with his kid in it, and by the sheer grace of the universe the worst thing that happened was that I fell asleep in a drive-thru line and my daughter had to wake me up.

I am not proud of that time. You have a support network. You have Tala and the step-dad. Use them and other resources. I'm sure you already are and if this is too preachy I'm sorry. Really, you don't need a guy on a soapbox right now.

Anyway, if you want to get more of it out we're all here. I really do hope you and your family are doing better today!

Did someone ask about health care in the U.S.?

(1) Took Impus Minor to his regular dentist. He has a minor crossbite, so they recommended he see an orthodontist. No; they don't have one in-office. No; they can't recommend one.

(2) Called Impus Minor's oral surgeon. No; they're not an orthodontist. No; they can't recommend one.

So later today I get to randomly pick an orthodontist out of a hat, because dentists, oral surgeons, and orthodontists no longer recommend each other because of somethingorother.

I'm sure it's either lawsuits or bad reviews, but FFS, having to do all the legwork myself because no one will recommend anyone else is maddening.

Sitting in a faculty meeting. We're in small groups in different classrooms, so our host teacher has the conference call on the projector.

Unfortunately, her audio cable is wonky, so everyone sounds like a chipmunk.

Combine this with the fact that we're impatient and voted as a small group to play the mandatory health training videos at 1.25 speed, and today has been cartoonishly surreal.

The email I missed earlier was a need to get a user credentialed as a user on our ordering site. I'm not actually IN that dept so I had to go through multiple people to find the right admin that could just punch some buttons and make that happen. Finally got the right person's credentials expedited.

Admin comes back and tells me the email bounced back. Turns out the person our customer wants rostered no longer works there.

Somebody's got to be the cranky old man of the thread.

Amusingly enough, yesterday morning our neighbor said much the same thing.

I was going off on

Minor political:
how in a recent poll 59% of Republicans said that even if a COVID-19 vaccine were proven safe, effective, and was offered for free, they wouldn't take it.

Impus Major cried out, "How can we have an entire political party in this country that is directly opposed to basic science?"

At which point our neighbor called through the open window, "I'm really glad we agree politically. I don't think I could live next door to [an opposing party-member]"

I had a conversation with a friend I've been gaming with for years. I even attended his second wedding. Regardless of all this socialization I don't think I ever got to really know him. Turns out he's got some weirdly conservative social views, bordering on racism.

Spoiler:
Like, arguing Redlining here in MN, an entire exhibit on which is featured in the MN History Museum, wasn't really a thing and people just need to move.

I got no problem with liberal or conservative, but I got a big problem with simply ignoring facts, on either side of these worldviews, when the facts don't support your narrative.

If life has smashed me in the face with one lesson, over and over again, its to be humble about the MASSIVE amount of stuff I don't know; to educate myself and grow from the learning. All I ask is that my fellow humans do the same, that's all.
