It is the Face-cam/chat-room/voice-chat app that skype dreamed of one day becoming. it is all three rolled into one. (I've not used the face-cam option yet, but the other two are just better than Skype for many reasons, but if you join to many discord servers, your computer will sound like a phone that dings all day.)
[Edited]
I just have the dings turned off =)
I will contest one thing - Discord's voicechat constantly drops a third of all conversation between Scint and me, making carrying on an extended discourse somewhat annoying. Skype never did that unless our connections were shot to heck by something like weather.

Ever used Skype?
Edit: Discord has had consistently less problems for me than Skype.I am usually the one it voice drops when I voice chat, but I don't mind repeating myself if I only have to do it once or twice every half-hour.

See my post just above yours. Yes we did and we never had that problem unless there were outside extenuating circumstances.
Even on the best of days Discord voicechat is constantly losing words.

To be fair, we play with people in about two to three different states, and in various parts of those states. Someone was going to have poor weather. Discord doesn't get worse with the weather, and while it's problems don't go away, not getting worse was still better.

The main reasons we switched to Discord were:
1. Our friends were getting locked out of Skype for various reasons, and because Skype is now owned and managed by Microsoft, they made getting back into your account a hell and a half, so they started one by one ditching the program and moving to Discord.
2. Other people we wanted to stay in touch with either didn't have Skype or had abandoned it for other reasons and Discord was becoming the place to keep in touch with 90% of people on the internet we knew.
3. Skype's mobile app has become all but unusable.
4. I already had it for keeping in the know on other communities - mostly games I played or Patreons I follow or support - so ditching Skype was just one less program I needed open on my computer.

Those are all reason I would list as things that make discord automatically superior to Skype.

Pretty much. Like I said, my one complaint about Discord has been the constant dropping of voicechat. In every other respect it's much more convenient.

Just on a larger scale, with a mini bobcat (and your family doesn't give you weird looks).
Have you tried using a mini bobcat to mold a mixture of mashed potatoes and peanut butter?
While nekkid, of course.
I don't think they'd blend very well.
But, yes, given enough of it, I can sculpt it with a mini bobcat.

My friends and I use Discord for gaming these days. We used to use Skype, and there's a couple of us that still do, but it's mainly Discord now.
I found it far more temperamental than Skype. I haven't had the word dropped issue, but we did set it up so that it's constantly transmitting, so it never stops to drop words. I'd still prefer Skype, but the migration is well underway, so *shrug*.

It'll melt chocolate, and give you (possible) skin cancer (twenty-fifty years from now) [you know, like ultra-violet light].
So you really need to microwave every bit of you body and insides, so that you can become deadpool!!!
Or it could just make you go blind if you expose yourself to long...
But then your dare-devil!!

No one uses google hangouts?
Only when forced to.
It's not as awful as Skype.Today in the car, Hermione was commenting on the subject of unicorns. I was only half-listening.
"...but not pink," she concluded with withering scorn.
"Oh? What color should a unicorn be then?"
"Either pearly white, or sparkly black with a pearly white mane and tail."
"So, a drow unicorn?"
"What's a drow unicorn?"
"Hmm? Nothing. [changes the subject]
Now I need a drow unicorn npc.

Just another rant. One of my players was asking for live chat for PBP. Sure I'm active beyond the norm, but I can't have a live chat on at work, since all those flashing lights and beeping sounds are going to attract unwanted attention and get me caught for skiving. For me if you want to communicate, that's what discussion and PMs are for.
As such I also will not open things on roll20, since you can't unless on premium membership, which I refuse to pay for.
Can't you just appreciate your GM for what she can do rather then make her do things she can't?

I helped!
(See, the backstory is that you used to be a drow, but rolled that one percent chance to come back as something else... and now you're all itchy and chaotic good for some reason!)
NOTE: that is not necessarily the back story... also, don't be upset if someone named "Drizzt" teams up with the MLP lawyers...

The only people I know who use google hangouts are from another aspect of my life that I am only distantly/indirectly involved in now and would misunderstand what we use the term "roleplaying" for.
And oh yeah, the people in one of my games. But thats because phone service is spotty in that neighborhood and hangouts is FAR more reliable.

We've recently started using it for between session communications, but only the chat feature. Not the voice or video options. We had been doing it all through email, but it wasn't always easy to go back through dozens of emails to find what someone had said at some point. So we use the chat to handle all that stuff now. The GM also uses it to share pictures of NPCs, maps (with all the GM only stuff scrubbed off, of course), and other things like that. It works fine for that.
