What do you get from a strip club that you can't from the internet for significantly less money? I was always under the impression clubs were very "look don't touch" and that's the only reason I can fathom someone would want the in-person experience enough more so to pay for it.

YMMV. Different clubs, different rules. I know of several in this area that have a strict "hands off" policy. I know of others that don't have such a policy. I have never been to one where what NH describes is the expectation. Different regions, different clubs.
For instance, around here, the cops will go in undercover looking to bust a dancer for prostitution.

Well, you have to remember that I was in San Francisco and Freehold is in New York, so the blue laws are a lot more lenient to begin with, and enforcement is essentially non-existent unless someone complains. I'm sure in Tennessee the laws are a lot stricter.
But I was in a club in the heart of San Francisco's smut district with a bunch of off-duty cops who were showing off their badges and saying, "Yeah, we're off-duty, so don't sweat it."
I suspect I saw the loosest behavior you'll see in this club.

Don't forget the "factor of 3" from being a Bay Area tech worker. Take any number I type and divide by 3, and that's more like what you'd see in your area. So yeah, that's still $300-$400 you'd be paying for your birthday dinner, which is a lot, but isn't as utterly insane as it sounds.

Usually for us during your birthday, its usually your friends and family who bands together to give you your birthday treat. So down here, getting Shiro to pay wouldn’t be seen as odd. But we’ll put it as cultural differences. If you buy/order big ticket items, you’ll get their attention. Also if you try to reserve on a major holiday the restaurant may also need to pay special attention as they may have other groups to juggle. Reservations are best done a week in advance here, though I’ve heard from you before that a longer waiting time is required in US.
Been there, done that.
I’m my family’s party organizer so anything to do with catering for a party, finding restaurants for family parties of 10-12 people, finding foods to BBQ and occasionally cooking beehoon for a party(our version is waay more elaborate featuring pounded dried shrimp, fried tofu skin, and sh*take mushrooms, shredded eggs, with chili and spring onion garnishing), it all falls into my paws.

depends on the club and club type.
My batchelor party, for example, was a private lounge- you got to hang with the girls and talk with them(they were friendly and liked to talk) and there was not much music. There was also an all you could eat sushi bar and a cold cut platter with soda- in order to get around New York law, you could bring your own alcohol, but you had to pour your own drinks and you were being watched the whole time- get too drunk, get escorted out. Here you can look and touch, but those touches had better be innocuous unless you are in private. Even technically illegal carnal pleasures could even be had for a premium fee, but I was there for the lap dances and sybian show(!!!!!), and I would not make friends pay for THAT level of debauchery(it would take things from "lets chip in to pay this 200 dollar lap dance for our friend Freehold" to "Freehold, that guy over there says he is going to break our legs if we do not pay that girl 2000 dollars for that rather loud hour you two spent behind the curtain").
Most strip clubs are just that- clubs. Loud music, frenetic dancing on poles(do not get too close, the ridge of the foot of someone who dances for a living will shatter bone even by accident), and lots and lots of alcohol. Not much food, though. The girls there are VERY obvious about the fact that they are working and while they will have a kind word, they are not being paid to sit around and do nothing but talk with you and will find other people more fiscally interesting if you are not forthcoming with liquid. Here you can look for free, but only the ladies will be doing the touching, and only during a song, which can get pricey.
There are also revues- a girl doing their own thing to their own music. I have yet to go to one, but have heard they are pretty awesome- increased artistic license for the performers, who you MAY get to hang out and drink with after the show, sometimes there are even autograph sessions with pictures and memorabilia if they have a following. However, noone is touching anyone here, these are usually for fans only who want to see what their favorite performer has been up to. Places that have a regular strip club show before and after the revue, so there are things for non fans to do.

So, there's no cultural difference there. In the U.S. you are supposed to be feted by your friends. But I have a rather unique background:
This year I'm willing to take the financial hit to make my birthday enjoyable for all my friends, no matter their income level. And since moving to tech, I'm making a salary that's comfortable enough that I can occasionally drop $1000-$2000 on a piece of silly furniture or a memorable dinner, and not cry about it.
Consider it Lisamarlene and Whingey's going-away party! That way I can justify paying for it!

Fair enough. If you want to pay, you're welcome to, since I view it as freedom of choice. Well except Hi, because we're working and he isn't ^^
I've never been to a strip club either, but what NH described was what I expected. I occasionally get to see people nude in the changing room in the gym because they can't be arsed to go to a covered up place to change.

And I don't actually believe that women enjoy watching men strip the way men enjoy watching women. Men stripping is just damned goofy.

The "break room" at work (not that we actually get breaks) has been very hot lately. In fact yesterday when I went in there to clock in, the thermostat was reading 88 degrees. I figured that was way to hot, so I started the fiddle with it. I don't know why no one else had noticed it, but the ac was set to "fan" not "cool". Switched it over, and voila! it is now comfortable in there. I must be magic.

Sure, but people have complaining about how hot it was back there for weeks and apparently no one (including maintenance, who said he couldn't figure out why the ac wasn't working) bothered to check if the ac was actually on.

It's incredibly frustrating to have family that, while they understand introversion, see it exclusively as a flaw or difficulty to be overcome rather than a welcome or even desirable part of one's self identity.
I've lost count of the times I've been told that, as the introvert, it's my duty or responsibility to adapt and overcome my natural inclinations and learn to be more social to meet extroverts' expectations and desires, and that not doing so is rude and disrespectful. And of course at no point has the opposite ever been considered, much less offered.
Ah, yes, the good old you are different in some way so you must work harder to set aside your preferences and conform for the comfort of the rest of us attitude :/
Sucks when society does it, sucks more when your family does it. Then one must practice the zen of not listening and then doing what you were going to do anyways....there may be a reason I’m the black sheep of my family....:PJust a Mort |
