Guys.

Guys.

GUYS.

The mcrib is back.

Do not attempt to initiate communications with me for the next few hours.

As proof of the deliciousness of the mcrib, the messageboards ATE MY POST.

Oh no wait, it's right there. I'm just naked.

Naked in celebration for the mcrib.

Slather my black manliness in that mcrib sauce.

Yes I know how that sounds, it's why I said it.

Oh, and out of curiosity I looked it up (again) (because I forget) and I’ve been posting to fawtl since page 19 of the original thread. I’ve posted in every iteration of fawtl since. Y’all can’t get rid of me. :P

Saw several cyclists tonight bundled up like it’s the frozen tundra here. Wtf? It was a balmy 49 degrees Fahrenheit at the time. I’m not being sarcastic. That’s pretty warm really. Two blocks later drove past a jogger in shorts and. T-shirt and a guy out mowing his lawn wearing a T-shirt. And I was like, yeah, now there are the people who didn’t just move here from a warmer climate. :)

So this is one of those frustrations that I think every group runs into: Our immediate group has 7 games running right now, with a total of 18 players. Of those 7 games, I'm running 4 of them.

Yet now that 3 of those games are wrapping up, we're finding a remarkable shortage of GMs:

  • I've been running at least twice a week since 2012. I'm tired. Even after Crimson Throne and Jade Regent wrap up later this year or early next year, I'll still be running two games a week. So I'm not volunteering to run any games at all until at least 2019.
  • Gothbard is wrapping up Skull & Shackles, and she dislikes GM'ing so much she's said she won't do it again for at least a year or two.
  • Shiro's going to be doing a custom campaign in Fremont for exactly 4 players, so he's keeping things ultra-sekret until his 4 are decided on.
  • Trevor's already running Mummy's Mask on Wednesday nights.
  • Our old RQ GM (what do you think, lisamarlene? The Soviet Madman?) is running a homebrew on Tuesday nights and raising his daughter, so he has no time to even play in any other campaigns.

  • And that's our entire list of "willing" GMs, with the exception of Impus Minor, who really wants to GM, but doesn't yet have the organizational skills to keep himself going, nor the stubborn-headedness to herd recalcitrant players. Once I wrap up Serpent's Skull, I'm going to invite him to GM the kids' game and I'll co-GM for him.

Anyway, looks like I'll be having a free weekend day starting in January or February. I may be able to... *gasp*... work on my garage or something!

I'd rather go with The Russian Rapscallion, but I'm addicted to alliteration.

49 is on the low end of jacket weather/high end of coat weather for me. Jacket weather is 50s and 60s; above that I generally don't need one.

I certainly wouldn't be out in just a T-shirt in anything below 75 unless I was doing heavy labor or something else exercise-intensive.

And I never wear shorts outside at all >_> I'm just not comfortable in them, no matter how many times Pokemon tells me I'm wrong. Shorts are for sleeping in only. If I'm going outside, I'm wearing jeans. Or slacks if I have to work.

In my early 20's I learned that 48° F was "perfect T-shirt" weather for me if I was going to be doing any kind of exercise. As I've gotten older, I've gotten more sensitive to the cold, but it's still somewhere in the 50's.

I've actually become less sensitive to cold as I've gotten older.

As a kid I hated winter but now I kinda like it.

    (a) I love "The Russian Rapscallion". Just remind me a few hundred times!

    (b) Don't forget that we can still socialize... *gasp*... WITHOUT RPGs! There are board games, movies, bowling, mini golf, LHS, BADM, the Exploratorium, etc., etc., etc. We can figure whatever out.
And before you get on the "all those things cost money" thing, I'm well aware of your stubborn midwestern sense of pride and self-reliance. But Shiro and I carried Hi through four years of unemployment, cheerfully treating him to whatever we were doing, because his company was more important than the $20 we were spending to have him around. If we didn't have a lot, we proposed cheap things. If we were flush, we proposed more lavish things. So trust us to manage our funds, and please don't cancel social events due to lack thereof.

    We'll make it work.

Socialization can only occur at the gaming table or with mcribs present. Or both.

    Also, mcribs are surprisingly affordable.

Now I just bundle as much as I can, if I'm just tired, nevermind the temperature. Dang it. XD

No, but seriously, after, like, the first ten years or so, I was no longer able to handle the cold weather. Suuuuuuuuuuuucks. But I still like chilly weather, but it's harder on me, now.

I am sure lisamarlene has had a mcrib before. NobodysWife and I seem to be the only people on the planet who haven't (other than our kids).

And I only see lisamarlene once every 2 weeks. If she sneaks off and gets a mcrib, it won't be on me... Impus Major still hates McDonald's, so we eat there maybe once or twice a year.

Oh, speaking of really cool things, Shiro is doing something utterly stupid with his new Jeep (a snorkel, huge offroad tires, and all the other Zombie Apocalypse stuff) so that he can go stargazing.

Once he has the whole thing built, we should plan a giant stargazing trip, at which point I will take no end of delight in taking my 12-year-old Prius wherever he takes his Mighty Jeep.

I haven't. I barely go to McDonald's ever, and I certainly don't go there for ribs.

And as I just had my sparsely-occuring McDonald's visit this past weekend, it will be quite some time before I have the urge to go again.

So, you've all heard me tirading about UHC ad nauseum, until NobodysWife's work finally got us access to Blue Cross.

So we had our first "incident" with her gall bladder removal, wherein the hospital charged us $1132 for the second visit, even though we were certain that the first had easily hit our annual out-of-pocket maximum.

So once we had all the bills in hand a couple of weeks ago, NobodysWife called the hospital. "Yes, we owe you a refund. It's a credit right now, but you'll get it in a couple of weeks."

And yesterday it popped up as a credit.

No letter writing. No contacting HR. No cursing UHC to the masses. Just, "Yep. We overcharged you. Here's your money back."

Somehow, I'm not regretting leaving UHC. At all.

Fair disclosure: This was almost entirely on the hospital for charging us, but I've never seen anything get cleared up and refunded that fast. There has to be something about the way Blue Cross interacts with hospitals to get them to be that much more efficient for them.

To be clear, I do believe in moral responsibility, but we're neither omniscient nor able to shake off the myriads of other influences that we have flooding around us at all times. We can make decisions, but those are always going to be influenced. "Free" will as most people define it is merely well-concealed madness and chaos. Also stupid.

Sounds like we are more or less on the same page. On the practical level, I believe in treating people as responsible for their actions -- both good and bad -- in the ways that most people do, because doing so can create one of the many inputs which determine behavior.

(Although there are many ifs, ands, and buts.)

But on the philosophical level, the idea of free will has lost all meaning to me. Everything we know about the universe, including about the human mind and body, involves chains of cause-and-effect. We ourselves are incredibly intricate complexes of cause-and-effect, and we lack a lot of understanding of ourselves, both as individuals and as a species. But I've yet to learn of anything which points to us being somehow separate from the process of cause-and-effect; in fact I can't even imagine how we could be separate from this process, and what would motivate our thoughts and actions if we were.

    Spoilered for Religion:

    Spoiler:

And if we introduce an all-powerful all-knowing Creator to the conversation, it is the ultimate origin of every cause-and-effect chain in existence, including us. That Creator created us with perfect precision and clarity, and I don't see how we could somehow be separate from its creative intent.

I'm sorry, I just do not understand the fetishization of the McRib.
My college roommate adored them, but she was Filipina, and food she loved (and encouraged me to try) fell into two categories:

    A. "Oh my gods where has this been all my life?!?" (i.e. any pastry containing taro or purple yam, and also her mom's chicken adobo), and

    B. The things I tasted and tried to find something polite to say about while she laughed at me and said, "Yeah, I guess you've got to be Filipino to appreciate that."

Because she was the only person I knew who liked McRibs, I put them into category B.

I'm pretty sure the McRib source code involves mechanically separated pork, wheat (for the bun), vinegar-soaked cucumbers, onions, and a tangy tomato-based sauce.
