Pat is a little bit outside of Boston. I'm not sure who else on the boards is in that area.

<censored> and now FB angered me with unasked for idiotic user interface change just as I want to check who else of my friends might be living in Boston area...

<censored again> And now I got my pressure leaping up after reading an article about some ******* imam in Denmark proclaiming that by not covering their faces European women are asking muslim to be raped. When I hear such BS I would really like to be 6th+ Sorcerer just to be able to smoke such sh** with a fireball barrage...

Sorry, had to vent but I am really getting angered when I hear anyone excusing rape. The only rape I could ever accept is done on rapists themselves to let them feel how their victims felt. Just before being drawn and quartered or impaled on stake...

<- looks like we had the same idea.

Very cool. I've always been curious about playing in a steam related setting. I think the trick is melding a magical world with a technological world. Why have technology when magic can accomplish more? However, if magic is confined to a small elite, then there would be a natural tension between the elite who have magic and the masses striving to achieve equality through technology.

Ok, trying to get some sleep.

I've always pictured it as technology helping the non-magical folks play catch up so society can be more equal and based less on an unofficial caste of sorts.

My point exactly.

It is a setting idea rich with campaign hooks, as the haves seek to prevent the have nots from reaching equality.

Technology could be outlawed, breeding a black market in tech. The elite could use propaganda to extol the virtues of continuing the agrarian way of life.

I see a dozen or more paths the world could take.

Turns out a constrictor this size would generally eat rabbits and squirrels and probably not go much bigger than that.

probably

Hey All,

Been a while since I have posted here. Just saying hello after a shocking day yesterday, I live in the Boston area. Fortuantely no family or friends were hurt by the bomb blast though I knew more than a few who were there and close to the explosions a block or so and in some cases where there only had left the area just recently. Anyway it is good to see my faith in humanity renewed with the various stories I have read and heard about people opening their homes to displaced people, donating blood and those who ran towards the blast when the explosions happened. As has been said by many already the person or persons responsible make up only a very small portion of our society most are good people who care about others and want to do good in the world. Sometimes great good can come from tradegies perhaps just being reminded of the oppertunities people have taken here to help with in turn pay forward to others to do better in the future and we can continue towards living in this small world together in peace. Hope springs eternal. Just my humble ramblings thanks for listening.

Glad to hear you're okay, man. Stay safe up there.

Probably less dystopian. I see those books as having Victorian technology in a context of 20th century political turmoil. (New Crobuzon to me has a lot of echos of early 20th century Fascist political thought.)

Also, less creepy aliens.

But there are definitely comparisons to be made.

More thoughts on my campaign world:

Spoiler:
There were a few seeds that inspired the idea. One of them was a comment on the asinine "are halflings offensive" thread. Someone shared some regret that 3e had gotten away from the more hobbit-like halflings of earlier editions. It got me thinking not of Middle Earth, but of the world Tolkein was idealizing when he created hobbits - a clash between the old ways and the new (and he evidently did not care much for the new).

I got the idea of what it would be like to have a world where that conflict is central. Where the old ways really are magical and some folk are feeling like they have been "left behind" by the most recent advances.

Other thoughts:
I would have to take a close look at firearms. I think military/combat technology would have to lag behind some of the other technologies, to keep other weapons and fighting styles relevant. Sword-fighting still went on in the 18th century because guns were a pain. I think I will go for that sort of idea so that an old guard of chivalrous sword-fighters still exists, and is much idealized by those enamored with the old ways.

Today's monster brings the feature back to the sea. This one is a little nicer than the previous undersea monsters, though.

I don't think it would be too difficult to come up with a compelling reason for the lack of firearms, but you will want one. Considering the gap between the invention of gunpowder and its use as a weapon in our world, I think you can easily make a case for it in your campaign world.

I think there will be some, particularly if someone wants to play a gunslinger, but I don't think they will be pervasive. It should be workable.

YOW!!! 12d6 bonus damage AND paralysis on a CR7 critter's basic attack? It's a good thing PCs shouldn't be fighting this guy....

Oops, I had this monster at a higher CR at one point and forgot to adjust his damage output. I will fix that. :)

Okay that's slightly less scary now. (Though paralysis on-hit is still nasty! I don't take back the bit about being glad PCs shouldn't have to fight this guy.)

I think I'll put a few of these in Savage Tide somewhere when I run it again.

It reminds me of the sequel they made to 'Avatar, the Last Airbender', where the bad guy was inventing all of these weapons to make 'normals' equal to those who could bend. (use magic)

They had stun batons, (Powered by a backpack) and taser gloves, and the car had just recently been invented.

But the conflict between the old and new was there, with some loving the new technology (even magic users) and some not trusting it (even non magic users)

I like the idea of your different countries reacting to the new tech in different ways. Some embracing it, some banning it, etc?

And God bless anyone living or even knowing anyone in the Boston area!

Glad your OK Pat,

I agree that paralysis is scary, but CR 1 ghouls have three chances with a full attack. :P

At any rate, if the PCs decide to fight one, hopefully they'll back off when one of the party is paralyzed.

If you end up using a monster or two in a game, I'd love to hear how they worked out.

That was definitely the role I intended for them, either to help with a negotiation or prompt/help the party to fight aberrations or chaotic monsters.
