Absolutely. In my game thus far I've used a lot of diffeerent tracks. Right now, the group is heading through a jungle in Sargava, so I'm using tracks from Apocalypto. I've used Pirates of the Carribbean tracks for ship travel and combat. I'm using piano tracks like Beethovens Moonlight Sonata for areas like Castlevania and Alkenstar for later in the game. Right now though my favorite tracks that I use for combat and such are from the soundtrack for Angels and Demons. They are fing AWESOME!

I've always used the "Conan: The Barbarian" sound track.

Final Fantasy 7 battle music comes to mind...

Quite short, but maybe the best piece of epic music of all

Stardust Soundtrack-Septimus

Sczarni RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Midnight Syndicate

You could do worse than looking up Sonic Legends in the Paizo store. They have atmospheric background music for a variety of settings and locations.

Go to youtube and search for GRV Music and Immediate Music.

I particularly like this one!

There are lots of places online where you can download youtube videos as mp3s, its all pretty solid stuff.

You could go to listen Ellectronica palladium and other works from Epica, Death of a Dream comes to mind, or go Nigthwish.

There is an odd leaning towards metal and its subdomains...

National Public Radio = NPR

Station and schedule very by area, so you might want to look them up on web. (record them off the airwaves, by CD or Tape, what i use to do)

Look up the programs (each has its own web site now) <linked them below>

Echo's
Heart of Space
Thistle & Shamrock

The Thistle & Shamrock is Celtic/Keltic/Irish music, great for elves, druid's, and bard's.

The Hearts of Space, is slow outer space music. Great to mood setters for Wizards, aliens, the old onces, and sometimes elves.

The Echo, cover the range in-between the other two. It is the most varied in different stuff, so dig around a little in this one. Some shows are great, some are slow, some are just strange. So keep an open mind, and explore....and you will hit different styles.

Enjoy :)

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Heavy Mithril, when metal is more about Sauron than Satan, was invented by Tolkien and/or DnD geeks.

Also, Symphonic Power Metal and Gothic music quite capture a Lord of the Rings' Battle for Minas Tirith feel.

Two Steps from Hell

Eluveitie

Bal Sagoth

These are some of the bands that get played at our gaming table

What computer video games do you have? You can often find Modder tools for extreacting audio/music files from games. I use the the older Neverwinter Nights music off and on, as well some from other sources.

However I generally find music a distraction at my table and mostly just use groups like Van Canto as inspirational music while I work. I still need to build an adventure around Last Night of the Kings

Chaos Rings iPad/iPhone soundtrack was on sale in the iTunes store a while ago,
its 7.99 last I checked for 29 tracks of techno video game fantasy, considering the music isn't locked anymore you could convert the m4a files to mp3. *edit and by video game/techno I mean by the same people who bring you Final Fantasy games.

"Halo" and "Halo2" Soundtracks are pretty amazing, they have a mystic feel to them, not a space/quirky feel.

"Ecco the Dolphin" SegaCD doubles as a music CD, I could see it being perfect for aquatic adventures. You can also find the MP3s on the web I believe, being how old it is.

EDIT: I would be cautious using popular themes... Zelda, Castlevania, etc. You may just end up derailing your game as player's then ramble on about nostalgia. (This applies to movie music too.)

Scarab Sages

Ok if you have a computer just log on to groveshark http://listen.grooveshark.com/ and search for the above mentioned bands/albums create playlists for different moods (dungeon, suspense, battle, aristocratic... and so on)and just let er go. you can then play a new (different) playlist when your PC's walk into their next cathulu inspired doom. I like apocalyptica, amorphis(elegy), Tom Waits (his instrumentals mainly)some select classical (grieg is good)stuff by danny elfman??? sp? and galic, welsh and irish folk music.
