Omaha, NE - Gaming Community

Gamer Connection

Soooo...what's it like to be a gamer in Omaha?

There's a real possibility that I may relocate there in the near future, and I wonder if there's anything out there? From my research, it seems that for a city Omaha's size the prospects of finding a good game store and community is kind of bleak. Is this true? Anyone have any input on this?

Omaha has plenty of gaming opportunities. There are 4 places I know of that sell games and provide game space, as well as a local gaming club. In addition, there are a quite a few people who play their own campaigns in the comfort of their homes.

Could you elaborate a bit?

Game Shoppe, in Bellevue, sells a wide variety of games, and has a lot of table space, which one group I play with uses.

Ground Zero, one in Bellevue and one in Omaha, is a comic store/gaming store that focuses on CCGs and roleplaying games, and both stores have game space available. The Omaha Cavaliers meets at the Bellevue store several times a month, and play a number of systems; I don't play with them anymore, but they are a good group that introduced me to people I later played home games with.

Dragon's Lair, in Omaha, I've never actually been in, but from what I understand it is similar to Ground Zero, a comic book store/game store.

A wide variety of systems are played, Omaha Cavaliers plays Living Pathfinder, as well as Witchhunter, Rokugan, and at least one other one; I regularly see a mix of systems, ranging from 4th ed to Pathfinder to various other smaller systems, played at the Game Shoppe. CCG's, board games, and miniature war games are also well represented in the various stores.

There is also a annual convention in the fall that is well attended.

This is encouraging. Thanks for the feedback. My google-fu initially revealed that there were a lot of comic shops, but not much for pure game stores.

The Game Shoppe is the only pure game shop, and is the focus for most of the war miniature stuff and board games, but roleplaying and CCG venues are plentiful. Each one has its own strength and pulls a different kind of crowd, and all have advertisement boards, so finding a group that works for you should be pretty doable.

Unfortunately the BEST store to game in Omaha (PhantaC) closed some time ago. Dragon's Lair has two locations, though the Blondo store > the Millard Store, and is solid for buying cheap, used material of past game editions of all varieties, and keeps up to date with newer material as well. Krypton carries a small handful of recent gaming goods, but seems mostly focused on comics anyway (I avoid it though; I've been treated poorly by employees in years past). I seem to remember a store called Colliseum, or some such, where regualar gaming events were held but haven't been there in years - it seemed frequented mainly be a pretty tight clique in those times, so I couldn't really comment on it these days, if it is still around that is. Other than that you have the previously mentioned Game Shoppe in Bellevue. I've only been there once since it is pretty out of my way, but it seemed solid, and I know a couple who game there every once in a while. Haven't ever been in Ground Zero, so I can't comment there, but I hear good things.

If you end up in Omaha and need a D&D / PF table to game at, there is always room at one of mine (I'm always running at least two a week and of various editions).

To get an idea of the types of games at The Game Shoppe, they have a fairly active forum at www.thegameshoppe.com It's a good shop and the crew there are very friendly. Flames of War, Hordes/Warmachine, and the various GW core games seem to be the most active as far as miniature gaming.

Dragon Lair (Blondo) has a very small gaming area, but as was mentioned, it's a great place to pick up used material.

If anyone needs another player for PF, I'd be glad to give it a go. I'm not overly crazy about 4th Ed. Due to my work schedule (work evening shift) I'd only be available on weekends though which may cause a problem.

Currently playing in PofPotts Serpent Skull PBP (Shisa).

Right now I'm DM'ing three games; a Pathfinder campaign game that meets on Tuesday nights, a Pathfinder RotRL's PbP on another messageboard that is currently sinking due to a couple players disapearing without word and a lack of a replacements, and a 2E Night Below game that runs every other Saturday evening (which alternates with another DM's 3.5 Shackled City on off weeks). We meet at a friend's apartment around 90th between L St. and Q St. If anyone in Omaha is interested in any of the above I can talk to the group about adding another member (most of the groups are the same players with a couple in each game that aren't in the others).

I might be able to help with the PbP game if you need a replacement; the others would be nice, but my schedule is full enough finding time for anything other than PbP is not an option.

Same problem I have. work schedule leaves little room for other than PbP, which by the way, I'm having a blast at. Good group in this one.

Maybe we should start our own 'Omaha PbP' heh.

I certainly wouldn't complain with an Omaha PbP, mix it with the occasional face to face get together and it could be a lot of fun.

That'd work for me. Willing to play any class / race / gender.

No no..that's the other half elf. Honest.. *innocent look*

I'd like an all Omaha PbP - always looking to expand my gaming circle of locals and wouldn't be adverse to the in person game every once in a while. If a group starts up I'd be in, though I'd prefer to play if possible (I almost exclusively DM these days, so it would be nice to see the other side of the screen). As far as my PbP game in progress goes, it looks like it is on a hiatus while a couple of members work out some scheduling conflicts.

Just checking to see if we have any new Omaha gamers around on the Paizo forums; always looking to expand the circle.

Poke.

Always looking indeed, everyone likes some fresh meat.

You'll scare away the fresh brains, Flash.

Mmm corn fed brains.

I'll take mine with ranch dressing.

Hi!

I have fresh brains!

Well, pickled anyway. :P

I'm fairly new to the Omaha area myself, having just moved here last summer. I've been lingering in gamer limbo this whole time, so I"m definitely down for getting in with a game. Personally, I'd prefer face to face rather than PbP. I also haven't GM'ed in a really long time, but I'd be willing to give it a shot if everyone's either unwilling, unable or too burnt out to be the GM! :D

and I hadn't even heard of that Game Shoppe. Here I thought I'd been to every game store in this town so far! I'll definitely have to check em out!

Feel free to email me at Colt2020@hushmail.com. Hope to hear from you all soon!

For some reason your email is not working when I try.

And to introduce myself, I regularly game with Ringtail who posted above. Give me a shout at constitutionaldefender@gmail.com.

I'm still around as well, and while I would love to play in a face to face campaign, my schedule right now is simply too erratic to allow it on a regular basis.

How do you feel about ranch dressing?

But seriously; I'm thinking about throwing together a game for in several weeks to a couple of month when my current campaign ends to meet some more local gamers. Anyone who may be interested either reply here or email me at mhawkins1116@yahoo.com.

Will there be brains?

Isn't there always?

Grand Lodge

Woops! Looks like I screwed up on my email there... should be @hush.com, not hushmail!

Told ya my brains were pickled! :P

I'm one of the regular players at Ground Zero in Bellevue. I play and sometimes GM Pathfinder Society down there, though you'll also find Arcanis and occasionally Rokugan. We meet on the first and third Saturday each month. You can find the current gaming schedule on warhorn. We try to get two slots in, and usually get 2-3 tables per slot.

Additionally, the local Pathfinder Society Venture Captain has just started up PFS at the Coliseum on Monday nights, at 84th & Park Dr.

While this Saturday would be the normal game day at Ground Zero Bellevue, this weekend is time for PretzCon. It's a small-ish local convention in its second year. There will be board games as well as PFS and Arcanis there. I went to PretzCon last year for board games and got hooked on Pathfinder. I fully expect it to be just as awesome this year as last. Come down and check it out!

I'd also recommend checking out the Cavaliers yahoo group. There are people who play 4e (and other stuff?) as well.

Grand Lodge

Yeah, I was quite surprised to see that Omaha had a Society presence. I tried emailing Clint about the Monday game at the Coliseum, but haven't heard back yet.

And I have a question for you regarding the PretzCon games... can I just "who up and jump in" or do I need to preregister or how does that work? I have to attend a funeral this Friday and I work on Saturday, so I'll only be able to attend on Sunday, but I was curious.

You can definitely just show up and jump in. Looking at the schedule for Sunday there are two tier 1-5 and one 5-9 tables scheduled. Bring a PFS character if you have one; if not, no problem.

I hope to see you there. :)

Society info if you're not familiar:
All characters start at level 1. There is always the option of playing a pregenerated character (level 1, 4, or 7 as appropriate to the scenario) and applying the credit to a "real" character. I would recommend this over rushing to build a character you may not end up liking (there are no rebuilds in society play). Most material is legal for Society play, but make sure to check the additional resources page.

Two people emailed me from here within the last few weeks. Something odd happened with my email and I lost them entirely; they're not even in my trash folder. Please email me again so I can respond properly. mhawkins1116@yahoo.com

I'm up for a good face-to-face RP game or PBP either one in Omaha.

Feel free to PM me and I can send contact info.
