Pathfinder's Version of 3.0 Savage Species

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I haven't really kept up with the majority of Pathfinder's releases, but does someone know if they released a book equivilant to Savage Species for the Pathfinder RPG? I know they never remade it for 3.5, but I don't know about Pathfinder.

Nope, and most of the folks at Paizo have commented that they are not really interested in setting up monsters as player races. There are some basic rules for it in the Bestiary, but nothing as complex as Savage Species.

All of our current and upcoming releases for the Pathfinder RPG line are here.

Sorry but no luck....

Closet thing you are going to get right now is page 306-310 in Bestiary. By applying types to a creature.

Scarab Sages

Sadly, the two bestiary books out don't even highlight those monsters which do already have proper stats for PCs, such as the Dhampir, Fetchling, Oread, Sylph, and Undine in Bestiary 2. I had to go through the whole thing entry by entry to compile my own list. On the other hand, I've noticed that the group I play with is not as into non-core PC classes as I am anyway, so perhaps it's not a high-demand product. I would certainly buy one if they put one out.

Thinking about it though, I suppose they could do a smaller 32 or 64 page Player Companion or Campaign Setting book with at least a few optional races. If they start with the bestiary races already out (with maybe some extra background) and toss in a couple new ones then it wouldn't be as much work as a full book like Savage Species to put out.

Bestiary 0-HD Races
aasimar
drow
drow noble
duergar
goblin
hobgoblin
kobold
orc
svirneblin
tengu
tiefling

Bestiary 2 0-HD Races
dhampir
fetchling
sylph
grippli
ifrit
ogrekin
oread

Also, to get the racial modifiers for any creature, subtract 11 from the creature's ability score if it's odd-numbered, 10 from the ability score if it's even-numbered. It's a good starting point for building your own PC races.

Ok, thanks for the info.

This is very useful.

Keep in mind that if you want to keep things balanced at low levels, you should use only races between cr 1/4 and 1/2. If i remember well, phb races are cr 1/3, so no big deal staying near...but a cr 1 could be too much starting at first level (in this case, no drow noble, svirneblin and duegar)

You might be interested in checking out Rite Publishings Races and Classes books. The most recent is In the Company of Minotaurs, but there are also Gargoyles, Giants and more. These books allow you to begin play at 1st level as a member of the chosen race, reducing each race to one equivalent to the Core Races (no LA or anything similar involved). They also provide a paragon racial class which allows you to level up as a stereotypical member of the race. Using the paragon class is optional however and you can easily use the race with a core class just fine if you prefer. So in some ways its like the ideas in Savage Species but more flexible and each Paragon class is a full 20 level base class.

there is a book called The Noble Wild, which gives you stats for playing an animal of legend. i would check that out. i bought the book and was very pleased.

Just a shameless plug. I plan on crafting more lesser races after the holidays. I for one loved Savage Species, but the flaws in the books designs cause people to shy away from it. A well executed version is sorely needed.
