No way - Belkar needs to face Durkula again.
Because that's gone so well for him the last couple times.

Exactly. Belkar needs to fulfill the prophecy

1 person marked this as a favorite.

What prophecy? You mean the one about him dying and staying dead? Because killing the High Priestess of Hel is currently the surest route towards that.

I don't think Belkar is destined for a big final noble showdown. I think the best he can hope for is one last slightly noble act to make Roy and the others go, "Huh, I guess that's sort of sad."

Silver Crusade

Belkar's too major a character to die fighting a minor character. He has to go down fighting in a more climactic way.

Oh snap!

The character might be minor, but the significance of the act isn't. Belkar has always only ever been a side character, and not a heroic one.

I agree Belkar is too established and major a character to end like that, likewise the internal narrative between Durkula and Durkon has to also resolve itself. The group may find itself with a new healer though with the favoured soul?

There's also two new tweets about how memory in the afterlife in OOTS works. Mostly it's what we already knew from strip 666, but it does confirm that Roy remembers what happened on the elevator in strip 600 (which wasn't indicated in the comic).

I just realized V messed up. You'd think the smartest member of the team would remember that there IS a healer on board the ship. Elan might not be a high level cleric, but he can cast Mass Cure Light Wounds a few times on all the wounded animals, which would make sense to do before heading in to find the tiger's mistress.

In fact, with Durkula's betrayal revealed, Elan just became the sole party healer.

Fair assumption.

Or maybe Vaarsuvius just happens to be the smartest member of the team and is taking the tiger to a room filled with a small army of the world's highest level clerics including the tiger's loving mistress. And is trying to get to the bottom of the shipboard snatch and grab at the same time.

As for leaving the entirety of the healing to to be Elan, I trust Rich Burlew to create solutions before problems even arise, nor for him to be that cruel.

One thing I have learned from reading The Order of the Stick, Trust Rich Burlew.

The clerics in the godsmoot can't leave until the voting's over. So none of them can come along while the Order goes chasing after Durkula. On the other hand, I'm sure many of them would be happy to help if they come back wounded (or dead). And maybe even provide potions for the Order to bring with them, so they don't have to rely on their bard as the only healing.

That's fair again, my understanding was Veldrina was the representative of the Western Pantheon, and was there for the initial part of the ceremony but is no longer required to be there in her official capacity.

I also like the continuity that Rich had three of the background Creed of Earth npcs become vampires.

Proves that Roy, even as the Fighter, is probably the most level headed and pragmatic of the group.

Which is why I love Elan. Trust in Banjo!

Damn you false god of pragmatism! Your Domains suck!

I'm a little surprised Roy was able to get out before other members of the Order burst in. He'll probably meet them on his way out.

I wonder how long Rich was waiting to use that one.

And that letter was long ago.

Rich plans his plot points and story arcs waaaaaay in advance.

I can't even get my players to agree on the next session.

Also, No Cure for Paladin Blues is now available as a PDF.

Also also, for those who forgot and don't feel like digging through the archives, here was the letter to Durkon that Miko dropped.

Interesting tidbit in that letter was that apparently Durkon's grandfather had passed away. And yet, we have seen no mention of him in all of the memory flashbacks that Durkon has had while talking to Durkula. Lots about his mom and "uncles"; no mention of other family.

Oversight on Rich's part or something else going on there?

With other authors this may well be valid, but kindly show me one example where Rich has done this previously.

As far as these comics are concerned, we are watching a grandmaster of chess play against himself.

Maybe, but he's definitely going to lose.

That is a great strip that makes me want to comment on it as we do the new ones.

And I realize that I find it more enjoyable than the recent ones because it was more biting and in the action while most recent ones, especially in the current book, are more convoluted and in the plot :-/

Well, it's hard to say if it was plot important or a one-off joke - since apparently grampa died after both his livers failed (dwarves apparently have two of them in Rich's world) from drinking what maybe is whiskey. It could have been a joke about the dwarven stereotype of being humungous drinkers as much as anything. Or maybe a joke that's worked into a plot point (we've seen that happen before). TBD, I suppose.

And how many people reading that will recognize that it's a eulogy for Wrecan?

ETA: I wouldn't have, but for 137ben's post.

What is that yellow cloud in the last panel? I'm sure you're right that it's deadly, but I'm still a little confused on exactly what's up.

Isn't that the barrier around the moot?

Did Wrecan just give Roy an actual copy of the 3.5 book Weapons of Legacy?

It also might be a reminder that death is often unexpected. Wrecan's death from heart failure was a surprise to many (at least to us and the Giant). Much as those attending the Moot weren't expecting the possibility of the world ending during the meeting.

Goodbye, Wrecan:(

Oh c'mon, if you're going to post a link about the Weapons of Legacy book, you could at least link to where it is actually sold, since that has a picture of the cover as well.

At least, it looks the same as the first time we saw the barrier.

I'm pretty sure the title of the strip, "Mark of Distinction," is also part of the tribute to Wrecan. Wrecan's real name was Mark, and he was certainly distinct:(

No, but they had a racial +1 for using thrown weapons.

That was what I figured. Also their dexterity bonus and their balance, jump, and tumble helped them overcome more difficult terrain a bit, I'd guess.
