How much does a Mithral Chain Shirt weigh?

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

I posted a note at http://forums.wolflair.com/showthread.php?t=11680 and Mathias at Haro has an interesting point.

Page 466 of the Core Rulebook has a Mithral Shirt weighing 10 lbs. Page 155, however, says that Mithral items are 1/2 their normal weight and page 151 has a chain shirt weighing 25 lbs, which would imply that a Mithral Chain Shirt would be 12.5 lbs.

So how much does it weigh? Thanks!

Whatever the ref says it does. Since the one in the magic items section is an example of a 'specific magic item' one can use the excuse that it's slihgtly smaller weight is part of it's specific creation.

In the end the game ref should choose which weight they use and stick with it.

Glifalas comment is right on, but as a ref I would lean toward the 10#. The rules should be generally applied unless an exception is specified somewhere else. This would seem to be one of those exceptions. I would also extrapolate that for small characters, making a small mithril chain shirt 5# instead of 7.125#.

I'd say it's pretty clear. Specific over rides general. In general Mitheral armor is 1/2 the weight for this specific armor it is 10lbs.

That all makes sense to me. Thank you for the input!

This was clarified by the v3.5 devs in the v3.5 days.

A mithral shirt weighs 10 pounds, despite being a mithral chain shirt (which should weigh 12.5 pounds according to the rules).

10 lbs

Been that way since 3.0 and every time it comes up WotC (and I'd expect Paizo too) says 10 lbs.

It is explicitly intentional, pick your reason for the difference. I personally go with 12.5 is "ugly".

According to Mr. Baggins it's "as light as a feather".

I just figured it was 2.5 pound lighter due to it usually being made by elves.

Continuing with this line of thought (which I agree with), how much would a +1 Mithral Shirt weigh? I would assume 10 lbs since you can just upgrade the 10 lb Mithral Shirt to +1. Right?

Back on the wolfair forum I got this:

Quote:
The magic items in the specific weapons & armor sections are, in my opinion, specific items, constructed as-is, and not available for further modification through the bonuses/special abilities rules that are separate sections in the armor and weapon rules. Otherwise, the "of luck" ability would have been given an equivalent bonus and be in with the rest of the armor abilities, or Elven chain would be identical to a suit of chain mail with the mithral material applied.

Basically this means that +1 Mithral Chain Shirts weigh 12.5 lbs.

Does that make sense? Anyone have a thought about this? It's only 2.5 lbs difference, but it's interesting.

It's a masterwork item, so a spellcaster can craft it into magic armour, yes.
