Quickest way to learn rules

Advice

Now that I am DMing two weekly games and normally 1-2 PFS games, I would like to know if there is any GM aids to help me learn the rules better. I currently own the Pathfinder SORD and it is a great product as I learn new stuff from it everytime I use it. However, I am looking for something more along the lines of a web based flash card type system. For me, this along with visual aids that depict the rules is the beast way to learn. Does anyone know of such a program or a program that I can make something like this? I am tired of feeling stupid for not knowing the rules.

Well playing that regularly is a good way to familiarize yourself.

Rule drills are another way to get to know the rules. Design encounters which utilize rules you might be shaky on. An encounter against a lot of grappling monsters for example will really get you familiar with the grapple rules.

Although I've played this game for a number of years, when bored and lacking inspiration to further develop my campaign, or just hanging out with friends. We sit around and think up scenarios and how they'd play out. This inevitably ends up with us going through the books and reading rules that we're not a 100% on, or unsure if they apply in said situations.

This is actually what spurred on my recently hotly debated light/darkness thread. The other thing I do in boredom is flip through the core book and I tend to stop only for things that catch my eye or are unfamiliar.

Sorry if any of that seems obvious.

+1

The best way to learn the rules is through experience.

I would also suggest sitting in on a game or two as a player if you have the time. I recently got involved in some games at a local hobby shop and it increased my learning curve considerably.

The boards are helpful too of course!

This isn't exactly what you're looking for, but I'll mention it in case it might be something you're interested in:

Seriously, there's nothing that gives you an understanding of the letter of the rules-as-written as fast as organized play does. In a home game it's surprisingly easy to get a rule wrong or inadvertantly houserule something by misinterpreting it and no one in the group picks up on it for years, if ever. In convention/organized play you're pretty well guaranteed to get corrected on something you're doing wrong fast.

Yes, I am a true believer in learning the rules correctly thru the PFS and have been playing since May. This is the major reason I want to learn and understand the rules as I now DM for higher tiers and am tired of having to apologize because I thought feat X worked one way and then to find out it does not. Also, with all of the magic that gets used quite alot at that level. However, I never thought to play out mock scenarios or flip thru the book and read a page. Both are very brilliant ways to use quick moments between doing other things or mental jogs. I am thinking though that I will probably make up some flash cards as well for the harder stuff like grapple and magic. Thanks for the responses!

I think it's great that you want to improve, but I wouldn't sweat getting it wrong too much, as long as you're not a dick about being corrected.

If you say something like, "I thought it worked X way but I may well be wrong, can you show me the rule?" nobody's going to be frustrated with you.
