Would you be abkle to elaborate on that please? If I was playing any game I imagine it may be during a PF or 3.5 game that someone was most likely bring up 4e (be it to say how good it was or how bad it was) purely because of the fact that they are all effectively "D&D".

I've been playing a Pathfinder game for quite awhile now. Warhammer has been brought up (because some of the guys are in a Warhammer game), but 4E has never been brought up. Nobody plays it - they prefer Pathfinder.

NYEEEAAARGH ! Can we have a "good things about PF" thread without somebody raising an argument that 4E gave him herpes, killed Gary Gygax and Adolf Hitler, burned the kittens, helped establish American hegemony over the universe ? And finally can you guys stop flamebaiting using arguments pulled out of a local dung heap, because it was briefly fun 2 years ago, but now it's just beating the dead horse again ? Thanks.
Could we have a discussion about "good things about PF" without somebody trying to sell 4E?

*blinks* Who is trying to sell 4E in this thread ?

Ah gotcha, its more a best thing about your group rather than the RPG. I was thinking in more general terms probably because I play in so many different places - conventions, different meetups etc. I imagine you could play a Warhammer game (or Savage Worlds or Traveller etc) with the same people and not have someone try to sell you on 4e

That's not "selling" anything. It's a statement of a person that enjoys both games.

It's selling 4e and it's just as out of place as if I were to say "4e sucks" in this thread.

Then, we're in agreement. The reason I didn't say "4e sucks" in this thread is because it'd be out of place - just like selling 4e is out of place.

Umm, I think it is safe to drop it. I think we can all agree that there are many great games out there, and that the subject of the thread is Pathfinder. Let's just leave the "you meant this" stuff out of it.

I also really like these message boards. There is disagreement, occasional rancor, and every once in a while a good old fashioned flamethrower war, but for the most part it is a good bunch of smart folks. I would also add a +1 to the person who mentioned the staff having the patience of 1,000 owls to put up with all of us. I hope that whatever (topic for another thread) added all the hostility to the playtest gets resolved, and we can go back to our healthy, nerdy debates.

Bottom line up front: Pathfinder RPG is not 4e…..Thank God

Pathfinder products are rich with content. I hated 4e when WOTC got lazy and created books with a bunch of stats and nothing else. Pathfinder histories, monster ecology, race flavor, and classes are spot on. When I pay money for RPG products I want content, not a watered down stats listings that make me do more work. If the content is not what I am looking for then I either change it or create it but Pathfinder gives me options. 3.5 did this somewhat and 4e not at all.

Maps: I love maps. Pathfinder maps are great and I love the smaller maps found in adventure paths that contain an area with greater detail. Again I want content for my money, don’t make me do all the work.

Art: Pathfinder art is the best I have seen. The art along gives me ideas as a GM to tell a story to my players.

Flavor: I think that the GM’s main role is as a story teller and that the PC’s get to play a part in developing the story. Pathfinder helps me in the story teller role. Pathfinder doesn’t have the video game feel of 4e and it’s scalable to any age player. I GM a group with my kids and their friends and I also play in a group of adults made up of high ranking military officers…..most of us played 1e in the early 1980’s. Pathfinder fits all the things I am looking for in a RPG and it is the best system I have ever seen.

+1.

I personally have a complaint list about 4E a mile long, but I'm pretty sure "I like 4E too" and "I don't particularly care for 4E" (factual statements about a person's opinion) can sum up everything we want to say about 4E that is relevant to this thread about PF. I'm pretty sure 4E isn't a taboo topic unless we start another edition war battle over it, something the people in charge around here asked politely for us not to do. 4E's not relevant to this thread though. The awesomeness of Pathfinder RPG is.

On that note, I really love that Paizo is letting 3PPs reference the APG. The only thing more awesome than great design is letting other people build on your great design. Standing on the shoulders of giants, as it were.

Something that seems to me to be truly in the spirit of the open source computer movement (the one responsible for things like Linux) that inspired the OGL.

Liking an edition - literally the same thing as me stalking LilithsThrall in real life, finding their real life game, breaking down the door, marching in, and demanding they buy said edition.

Or maybe you're just obscenely over-sensitive!

The thread has plenty of people going NURRR NURRR I HATE 4e. I'm allowed to go NURRR NURRR I LIKE 4e in return. Especially when mine was a one sentence statement where all I did was say it's fun.

If you can't handle that, you might want to leave the internet entirely, because you're allergic to things that aren't you. And the internet is more or less 99.99% things that aren't you.

ANYWAYS. 4e owns, Pathfinder owns, 420 play D&D every day.

-Nobody- said that when you are selling 4E in the Pathfinder board, that it's the same thing as you literally stalking me in real life. Hyperbola much?

One thing I like about Pathfinder is I don't have to hear somebody selling 4e while I'm playing Pathfinder. It would be nice if these message boards were the same way.
As for being "over-sensitive", the fact is that rabid 4e advocates often crawl out of the wood work when I express my opinions on that system. If I'm going to not criticize 4e here, show the same respect by not selling it here.

The best thing about Pathfinder is that I can play it without anyone trying to sell me marbles.

Marbles are just a giant, corporate money grab. They don't even come with setting information. And they keep producing new, different-looking marbles that we're supposed to think are cutting-edge, but at the end of the day, all of these "different" marbles play exactly the same. The only difference between one marble and the next is color.

I can't believe you dismissed the difference between red swirly marbles compared to solid blue-green marbles. They clearly spin much faster and work the way marbles are suppose to work. ;)

The Exchange

Three reasons I like Pathfinder are;

1) Souls of the Smugglers Shiv
2) Stolen Land
3) Howl of the Carrion King

They write better adventures than I have ever seen before, adventures I cannot wait to read and play in or run.

One way that Pathfinder has taken advantage of the internet is the RPG Superstar competition. Rob McCreary, Neil Spicer, Jason Nelson etc they all had there big break from this and now look at the work they produce.

Well done to everyone involved, even this community.

Cheers

The best thing I like about PF is the support products. They are well written and useful. In previous editions of D&D you had tons of books that looked cool but turned out to be crap. 3E did less of that but 2E was filled with stuff that looked cool that turned out to be poorly written and useless. It happened a bit with 3E too from what I heard, I didn't buy much 3E stuff so I can only go by what others say.

It's versatility. You can pretty much create anything that your imagination conjures up and its workable within the system.

I agree with most of the other things that have already been mentioned.

A funny little thing I like is the "chapter-starters", the small scenes with the different iconics and others, setting a scene, creating an atmosphere that scream out "Adventure! 'Ere I come!"

That is one of the nice things, yes siree!

What I find interesting by reading this thread and many other "sell me on Pathfinder" threads on other forums, is how many of the reasons people like Pathfinder RPG are actually nothing to do with the RPG mechanics itself.

For exmaple, people like Pathfinder because...
Paizo releases the rules under the OGL allowing 3pp to suport it
Paizo offer product up for playtest
Paizo people actually chat and answer questions on the forums
Pathfinder has great scenarios, adevnture paths, maps
Pathfinder supports a popular Living campaign
Pathfinder isn't 4e
etc

It makes me wonder whether Paizo could have had the same success if they had used a completely different system (e.g. FATE, Savage Worlds, Mongoose RuneQuest (which is OGC) or perhaps M&M). Imagine if Paizo had instead of developing Pathfinder RPG had simply started churning out Adventure Paths etc for Savage Worlds?

Of course many people moved to Pathfinder because it was 3.x and so somewhat backwards compatible with D&D3.5 - but interestingly that seems to be only one of the many reasons why Pathfinder is great now.

No, by a long shot.

Considering that D&D 3.5 was and perhaps still is THE most popular RPG system on this planet AND that the RPG industry is one of the least profitable industries in existence, if you want to take a shot at living out of RPG publishing, you aim high. So, you do stuff for the World's Likely Most Popular Game System.

That, and the fact that after doing Dungeon and Dragon for several years Paizo staff is made up of D&D people, and their freelance bank is also D&D-focused.

Yeah, probably not, initially it being 3.5 like was important but now it seems less so. Still, I wonder whether Paizo could have been just as successful if they hadn't revised the rules though, just stuck with 3.5 for Pathfinder RPG and used their APs, new supplements, setting, PFS, open playtests (of supplements) etc as encouragement to buy it.

I think "I like the game system" is implied in most of the responses so far.

The thing that really drove home my newfound love for Pathfinder was noticing how many staff members were posting during the weekend. The dedication to the community and the game that I've seen has been outstanding in the few months I've been playing, and that's what keeps me coming back and losing paycheck after paycheck to them.

Wait until you see the CEO post in the middle of a night during a holiday :)

There is no best thing about Pathfinder. It's made completely of Win!!!

Seriously, and without hesitation - best game on the market, best value for the dollar, best artwork, best setting... Right now I'm just wishing I had more time to play.

M-hmm.

For me, it's the availability of PDFs. The majority of my gaming is play-by-post, so I'm on different computers at different times; sometimes the PDF is enough; I live in England so shipping times are lengthy on the hard copy. The fact of a free PDF with subscriptions is icing.

(Also, I like the campaign setting.)

the best things about pathfinder are the company and community behind it.
i loved 3.5 d&d and decided after 2 sessions of 4E not to switch, and i now love pathfinder just as much. i can keep playing the game i want to play, the way i want to play it. with pathfinder, it really feels like the people behind the game care about it just as much as i do. people > profits i guess.

the other thing is the community. i lurked on these forums for a long time, and only recently began actually joining in on the fun. there's a real sense of community that i haven't seen anywhere else. less flame wars, really helpful people, it's good stuff. this is the best place on the internet, hands down.

The best thing about PF is that they made the core classes playable all the way to 20th. Beyond that, they did not get trigger happy with all the prestige classes, instead they allowed you to further customize your character with the APG!! Way to go!! Keep up the good work!!
