Two of the most infamous outlaws to sail the seas of the RPG world have signed articles, and are setting out on a joint venture of danger and glory! Open Design is launching a new adventure design project for Green Ronin's campaign setting Freeport: The City of Adventure.
Patrons of Dark Deeds in Freeport will work with Wolfgang Baur, Chris Pramas, and lead designer Michael Furlanetto to create a 72-page adventure that blends swashbuckling derring-do with supernatural horror in the Freeport tradition for the Pathfinder system.
When kobolds and ronins team up, who knows what will happen? Get in on the action and find out! Patron slots for the project are available at the Kobold Store starting at $24.95.

Wow - that sounds really cool! I could play all my Pirates of the Caribean soundtracks back to back!
Is this for the Pathfinder RPG?

We've posted our first preview material - check it out, and if you like it, join our motley crew!

Hey fine folks and fence-sitters! I wanted to let y'all know that I'm giving away one of my author's copies of the Freeport Companion: Pathfinder RPG Edition to a random patron that signs up between now and when the projects gets enough patrons to get the greenlight.
So, if you want to board this ship....clicky here. (There's even a handy link in that link that describes what a patronage project is.)

The book sounds really interesting, and I think I may be toppling from the fence soon.
One question I have- I've heard of Freeport, but I've never used the setting. What makes Freeport awesome? ^_^

![]() |

Recently on the KoboldQuarterly.com forums, Chris Pramas, of Green Ronin and creator of Freeport, wrote this in regard to the origin of Freeport (way back in 2000):
"I began to think of the features I wanted the city to have. First, I thought it should be on major trade routes, a place where adventures from far flung lands might come together. Second, I wanted it to be easy to drop the city into existing campaign settings. Those two factors argued for a port on an island. That would let a GM just drop the island in any convenient place on the campaign map and be ready to roll.
At its core the city had to be built on the assumptions of D&D, but I wanted to add a twist or two. The first element, pirates, came naturally once I determined it was a port city. Who can say no to swashbuckling after all? The second developed as I was working out the plot of the adventure. Basically, the investigation focus of the story made it like a Call of Cthulhu adventure for D&D. I thought it only appropriate then to add some cosmic horror to the mix. I did not want to be so blatant as to actually use Cthulhu but this is what led to the idea of an ancient serpentman empire destroyed by the Unspeakable One."
I'm sure others can chime in with more tasty bits. :)

For me, what makes Freeport awesome is the snake people, and the use of the Cult of the Yellow Sign. Because Mythos elements always make me happy.
Oh, and the project is 70% of the way to meeting its funding goal. Once that happens, design starts and the price to join goes up, so... It's worth jumping aboard sooner rather than later.

Green Ronin has posted another (patron-generated) preview for Dark Deeds - you can find it here.
I'm trying hard not to spoil the plot of the adventure, but this preview does a really good job of capturing the mood and some of the themes.
Check it out!

We're having so much fun in Freeport that we couldn't resist doing another preview.
Take a look at what Steven Robert - author of fan-favorite PFS scenarios Tide of Morning and Citadel of Flame - did with Freeport traits here!

We're at 73% with a week left. Don't debate on this one-- if you want to see project launch, we need to hit 100%! Sign up and enjoy months of interaction, design and discussion with Chris Pramas, Wolfgang Baur and Mike Furlantetto! If you're a fan of Freeport or looking for some swashbuckling goodness, this is for you.
Also note, patrons get the PDF and access to playtesting. (Zuxius, I'm looking at you.)

Come on and join our crew of scalawags and ruffians! I've been on a bunch of OD projects, and I can honestly say that this crew is one of the most interactive - we've got lots of friendly and constructive back and forth, as well as lots of great ideas, both crunchy and with Freeport flavor.
Even if you know nothing of the setting, though, it'll still be a blast - this is really shaping up to be a unique and memorable urban adventure, and it will easily fit into most any setting!

How much input do the patrons actually get? Do Pramas and Baur actually listen to opinions and take input, or are the patrons just watching over their shoulders and kibbitzing?

![]() |

Patrons get a lot of input. There's a forum where Mike, Chris, and I post materials (like the outline for the adventures), where patrons can add their own ideas, and it's a collaboration.
Now, the final call may be up to the lead designer, but it's extremely rare for a designer to ignore a good patron idea. Individual monsters, items, and plot points are all subject to patron review and criticism.
There's also a playtest manuscript that goes to all patrons for review before publication. Things get shaken out pretty throughly.

The folks over at Kobold Quarterly have put up a Last Call for Dark Deeds in Freeport, with a message from Chris Pramas discussing the origins of Freeport. The whole thing- Freeport-based, Pathfinder-compatible, Open Design project- is very cool. Patronage is worth checking out, even if you're only the slightest bit interested in seeing how this process works- and you get to chat with the game designers and other people who are quite passionate about the game. ^_^

good I have a few days left, was planning to upgrade to a Major donor, hope that will help!

The project is currently 97% of the way to the funding goal!
The price will go up when it hits 100% or on Friday, whichever comes first.
Well hopfully it does not happen before I get home tonight, paypal is blocked at work. Talking about that, you guys need to work on a means to pay without going through PayPal.

I hope so; I decided to buy into my hype and upgraded from my senior patronage as well. ;)

I am penniless at the moment, but should be able to become a patron in January. Will the option still be available in Jan?
Yes, this project will be in brainstorming and some pitches in December, but with the holidays and general end-of-year merriment, there will absolutely be design in the New Year.
So please do join up in January when finances recover!

Mike Furlanetto |

We have indeed met our goal and we're starting design. We'll be working well into February, though, so join when you can!

FenrysStar |

As someone who has been buying Freeport products since the first adventure getting in on this as a patron was a no-brainer. I may not have everything for Freeport but I have enough with companions for D20, True 20 and now Pathfinder. I also have the Creature book that I would probably get if it were redone for Pathfinder. I also have the hardcover Pirate's guide and the book on Cults. Now granted if I am going to run Freeport I'll be using Paizo's snake people and more than a little bit of the current Serpent's Skull AP but the cults and other Lovecraft brand horror elements will be firmly in place. I'm glad I got my ticket as a patron and I look forward to setting sail under the black flag.

Sorry Harry, the patronage period is over and the playtest reports are streaming in for the project. We'll be moving toward a final manuscript, editing and layout in the spring and summer months.
However, I'm happy to say that Dark Deeds in Freeport will be released later this year and will be offered for sale here on the Paizo site in print and PDF.

Good news for the cash strapped! :-)
