I have more stories than I care to remember on final straws that made me leave a game. The most vivid is the last time I ever went to a con. I know not all cons or people at cons are bad. But things like this seemed to happen more at cons than anywhere except the backroom of gaming shop pickup groups, which was on par.
Anyways went to a con, was wondering around checking things out. A guy comes over and asks if I want to play in their DnD game they wanted to add another, as someone has canceled he said. So was a bit leery but he seemed nice enough so i said ok. There is him a player, 2 other players and the GM. Game starts off fine, escorting a merchant caravan. Few combats etc no problems. I was playing a female elven wizard.
Then we arrived at the first town, some social stuff in the inn. Not to bad but some of the stuff on how the other PC's treated the female NPC's was a bit much. After a bit my PC heads up stairs, then bam my PC is knocked out. no roll's no saves nothing. Just told you are hit from behind and knocked out. wake up in her room the next day, bruised, sore, clothes mostly missing, spell book gone and needing to eat twice as much. It was narrated to me the next morning on what my PC did. Including going down to eat like it was not a big deal.
I was just a tad stunned, the GM while never saying what happened made it clear with relish, the other two guys seemed to be amused. The guy that invited me to join never said anything but he at least looked ashamed. I didn't say a word, just gathered up my dice, got up and walked away.
Anyways that was kinda a double straw for me, to make me walk away and stop going to cons.

Her version of events.
Oh man, I was running this sweeeet game at a con and just when I was getting to the good part of the adventure, this chick just ups and walks away. I had 3 more pages of flavor text for her "morning after" and they were just wasted. I guess we were just lucky to find a real woman to play the elf chick, if even for a little while. No worries, Doug filled in just fine for the rest of the session.[/sarcasm]

Score one more for the creeps who live in their mother's basement and have never had and probably never will have a social life.
I have to agree that some of my worst gaming exeperiences have come at conventions, when who you end up gaming with is kind of luck of the draw. Ditto for pickup games at the local gaming store. It's kind of like blind dates. Occasionally you find a gem, but have to deal with a lot of desperate psychos to get there. Of course, what do I know about dating? I've been married seventeen years.

Man if I was at that table at a con I probably would have punched the DM. Who the hell acts like this around people they dont know? Does the DM guide need to have a section on basic human behavior for guys like these?

To be fair, the guys that act like that are a tiny minority. But as the old saying goes, it only takes one. To make it into a bad experience.
I know, but the problem is it's a very memorable minority that frightens lots of people away from the hobby. I am quite happy that RPGs are less of a boys club then they once were. And each time something like this happens its potentially a step backward.

I always went as part of a team; It's been a while since I went to one but you are pretty much encouraged to come as a registered group - I suppose it's more casual these days... scary to think that finding such whackbag players who want to live out their lurid fantasies is actually reasonably common!

Wow...some of these stories are amazing in many bad ways...
I've only walked away once. It was my first time playing any type of tabletop role-playing game. It was also the first and last time I've played in a 3.5 game.
Background Time: While I never played until this point, my girlfriend and I did hand out with a group of friends who did game every week. We were often there during the meetings, so we did know some of the rules. After about two years of us watching, the DM decides to let us join his new campaign he was having with different players. We agree and got to work making characters. I made a Lvl. 1 Raptoran Ranger while she made a Lvl. 1 Elvish Rogue.
The Event: The first thing that got us thinking that this was a bad idea was the first thing out of the DM's mouth. Even though we were supposed to start a new campaign, the other players were allowed to use their Lvl. 17 characters. We decided to run with it. We started the campaign in a bar. The first thing one of the player's decider to do (he shall be named "A") was go a w***house. The DM then spent the next HOUR explaining the events in great detail. At this point both me and my girlfriend are really creped out. But we still go along with it.
After that fiasco, we finally got our first fight...against an Elder Red Dragon. Since both me and my girlfriend were under-leveled for such an event, we were both made unconscious somehow (instead of outright dying) when the dragon attacked us. After the party defeated the dragon, "A" decides that he will now proceed r*** my girlfriend's character. The DM begins to describe while "A" begins to wink at my girlfriend. At that, my girlfriend slapped that a**** across the face and we left.
Thanks to this great introduction, it took me 6 months before I got back into Tabletop Role-Playing (my girlfriend and I had a falling out between said period. We're still friends). I have yet to reach a game were I just walked out ever since. But then again, I am still relatively new to this so...
(Sorry for the long post)

Before I launch into my final straw story, let me extend my condolences to Dark_Mistress. As you'll hear in a moment, I feel your pain.
Alright, so it's the first session of an Eberron game that a friend of mine is GMing, who I admittedly always had misgivings about when it came to his ability to adjudicate fairly and create level appropriate challenges. Still, he's a friend and I wanted to be a player, so I figured, "What the hey, I'll give him another shot".
My half-satyr bard/sorcerer from the Twilight Demesne arrives in Sharn and ten minutes into the adventure, I'm attacked by assassins and I die. Not wanting to have me bring in a new character, I'm brought to life at a Jorasco enclave after discovered by the city watch. Ten minutes later, I die again. I'm again resurrected, this time thanks to a mysterious vampire NPC/deus ex machina. Thirty minutes later, after finally meeting up with the rest of the party, a group of five barbarians force themselves on my character after having keelhauled him (without warning) into the privy, resulting in an STD of his posterior (which, yeah, don't exist in Eberron!!!).
The fin-de-siecle occurred, however, when I was ambushed by an evil wizard in an alleyway whose ring of counterspells contained an obscure splatbook 1st-level spell that my character had learned and attempted to use:
Me: Alright, I can't negotiate? In that case I'll cast sonic sn-
DM: Nope, ring of counterspells.
I was then gutted by the wizard's +6 dagger... Yeah, +6. ::eye roll::

Well, just once so far. It was a group where the DM and players were getting successively more verbally abusive towards me personally over the months, until I didn't feel comfortable anymore in their presence and simply stopped coming. A few year later I heard that this caused the group to fall apart due to lack of members, so I guess even unintentional revenge is sweet.
I've now been playing in one group and DM'ing another for several years, both very happily and with a steady membership, so I am quite happy with the situation at the moment.

I never heard that saying.
"It only takes one. To make it into a bad experience." Sounds unwieldy. Is it so old it was invented before they discovered the fact that sayings should have a certain ring to it?
;-P
(Sorry, I'm terrible that way. I just can't shut up.
This reminds me of a mixed metaphor. "It only takes one apple to break the camel's back" or something. All in good fun!)

The fin-de-siecle
Wait wait, go back a minute there: Your character, after being killed off a couple of times arbitrarily, was gangraped in the game (and got an STD as a memento to boot), and that WAS NOT THE LAST STRAW?
Wow! That's quite extraordinary - unless you didn't quit because you had your hands full restraining yourself from beating him senseless with his own dice bag or something!

You know, all these "hilarious" rape stories remind me of one very weird incident we had in a game once.
It was the final session in this campaign, and we managed to bypass the whole final dungeon, including the end boss, about 10 minutes earlier, so this was already one of these days.
We decided that our characters would hit some tavern to celebrate, and that we'd play that out instead (one-hour gaming sessions are a big short).
As I said, it was already one of these days, and the (all-male) group knew each other well enough to get away with, let's say, "off-colour" shenanigans without offending each other.
So the whole party was in the tavern. One of the characters (elven male bladesinger, I think) was the latest descendant of a very important bloodline, which carried the power to safeguard a whole demiplane inhabited by one sub-race of elves (note: the GM in question is simply superb. He managed to pull that off without making the game all about that character, so it was not hero and sidekicks or anything).
The character did not have children, didn't have a wife, or girlfriend, or friend with benefits, or anyone. That made some characters decide that they owed it to those elves in question to make sure this very important bloodline lived on. They would make sure in this very tavern.
So they started with trying to get him drunk and then hit on anything elven and female in the tavern (I think there was some priestess from a novice adventuring party). Didn't really work (the bladesinger didn't get drunk).
So they decided to bribe the priestess with several thousand GP (peanuts for them but untold riches for a 1st-level cleric) so she'd seduce the bladesinger and bear his child, for the good of the star elves. Didn't work, the priestess didn't want to prostitute herself even for thousands of gil.
So they decided to engage into a bit of what I can only describe as involuntary elven husbandry. I'd call it "mutually enforced rape", but neither of the victims was willing, so I'm not sure it would apply. So one guy grabbed the (relatively weak) priestess to hold her down while two other characters jumped the bladesinger, with the intention to mate them forcefully.
I'm honestly not quite sure how they wanted to accomplish it, but it was moot, anyway, because such childishness was beneath my character. And since my character was a 5000-year-old master of psionics, he just tossed the offenders through the room with his psi powers, let them hit the wall once and then kept them suspended in the air, tsk-tsked them and told them in his usual quiet tones "Now, now, we're all grown-ups here, let these two in piece."
Again, the fact that we weaseled out of a final fight for the second time in a row put us all in a weird mood, and again, we all knew each other, so we were pretty sure we wouldn't do anything that would adversely affect anyone there, but it was still weird.

What is it with all thes guys and their smutty lurid fantasies?
Did I miss the introduction of 'Penthouse:the Smuttering' where every player must start any in game chat with "I never thought I'd be writing in to a magazine like this, but the other night me and this wood elf enchantress..."
Why does every session have to begin with Uncle Creepy and his Kidnap Wagon and end in the Rape Dungeon?
Please, get you pr0n fix BEFORE you leave home.

What an amateur.
Due to bad dice rolls, I've gone through four characters in ONE session!
HA!!! I've lost 50+ characters in the original Temple of Elemental Evil. Most were killed by party stupid. Examples: my rogue would point out a trap and tell them not to trigger it and someone wouldn't pay attention and trigger it.
We also played using crit hits/fumbles. One combat, my ranger was fighting a gnoll and the dwarf managed to get behind him and because he was out of movement, he threw an ax. Rolled a 1. Rolled to see if he could hit me. Rolled a 20. Rolled another 20 confirm. And then did max damage.
Finally rolled up a barbarian that lasted the rest of the campaign.
Our DM got busted selling coke and when we pooled our money to bail him out, he skipped. So we raided his stuff to get out money back. One of my friends grabbed the notebook full of my characters and uses them as NPCs.

For me the last straw in a 3.5 game came after i realized that one of the other player's didn't like my playstyle. First I made a Half-elf barbarian with the major titan bloodline from the unearthed arcana book. First session the DM didn't care that I was playing chaotic evil and would have probably killed the cleric in the party. Frankly speaking he thought it would be hilarious. Well one of the players gets the idea to trick my character then kill me in all the confusion. So I was pissed but I thought "Hey one character died but I can always make another." After perusing the books I settled on the warlock, picked the aasimar race and fenagled my way to a ridiculous bluff skill check. More or less she could lie her way into and then out of a paper bag with no problem and if anything got in her way she could blast it with eldricht blast. Well for some reason my CG warlock and the CE half vampire swashbuckler got along really well. We didn't care that they were opposing alignments so we went off on adventures together taking up small amounts of the dms time to have fantastic stories. Well on one of them the same player who killed my barbarian came along with us snuck up on the characters when they were asleep and coup de grace... worst part was he called it in from work. That was it I was done. We got our characters revived and killed the multiclassed rogueish thingy and then we left with smiles on our faces.

That really stinks. I encourage each of you that posted convention GM/player horror stories to come to PaizoCon this summer. I can guarantee that that kind of crap will not be happening at my table, or any of the other tables of GMs that I met and came to respect from last year. Come play and have fun. Put this kind of convention BS behind you.

The last straw I had was about 7 years ago. A long term 3.5 game. The issue was not with anyone in the group or DM style or anything like that. But the 3.5 rules.
I was playing the main fighter, a dwarf. I was killed and came back like 3 times. Each time I lost a level. By this time everyone else was around 10th level I was 7th because of the level loss. This was a combat heavy game and I was still the front line fighter. I knew I would most likely keep getting killed and brought back, each time losing a level. Then I thought about it and it was not fun for me anymore.
IMO one of the reasons I like to play RPGs is to play your character and watch them get better, stronger. I can't get better if I keep losing levels. So, whats the point I thought.
I not only quit that game, but all other RPGs for 6 months or so because I felt there was no point.

I generally DM but recall a few bad sessions...
4. This isn't mine, but a female gamer friend won't touch sci-fi after a prior DM announced females of the sci-fi universe wore skimpy outfits and were more-or-less slaves to men.
I thought that's how it was in all the game I've ever played.

I've noticed a trend amongst these story's involving a 4 letter word that starts with R. Anyway here's a story that looking back on it isn't really funny as much as it is sad. Its sad because as i look back the DM in question has done this several other times to other players of both sex's ( characters and players sex's alike )
this didn't happen to me, but i was in a group of people playing at our local gaming store and in this session the dm decided that we were all going to drink shrinking potions and go for a adventure in a world under a tree, in a swamp...
I'm not even sure why we were in the swamp to be honest, anyway.. This was one of the dms MANY side adventures ( in fact i'm no sure there was a main quest really ever to be had ). We go down into the tree kingdom world.
The kingdom is ruled by these rat people who ride Beatles, anyway we are taken before the rat king after being found in his kingdom. He begins telling us this and that and eventually gets to what he wants, yet another side quest i'm sure, but at some point the conversation slips to him letting us go, now instead of doing his idiotic quest that we don't wanna do.
He comes down to terms with us and it involves the only female pc in the group, of course. After a brief ( 20 minutes ) of "discussion " the dm has her very angry with his intentions of using her for a bargaining chip for us to leave.
She and her boyfriend left if memory serves me correctly, with good reason.
Now this dm has done so many things that you'd think i would have left so many times before, but i didn't because he was my first dm and i didn't know any better. Plus i didn't know anyone else who ran as on time as he did every week, sometimes multiple times.
I remember when he used to turn my human wizard into his were bear form against my actual wishes when i got angry or agitated during game play, and reduced my int from 20 to ten every time.
Another reason i should have left was the fact that if he didn't like your character, or you, he would force you to change it by ( seemingly ) randomly apply templates to your character as punishment, or in his eyes perhaps it was a gift, i don't know.
For instance i was a latent were bear, it kinda just happened out of no where, I could handle it though, just had to watch my temper. Our semi reoccurring youth at the table ( he came and went because of school, he was a cool kid. He was just being dmed by the wrong dm ) whose character was killed more times in single session that i care to remember had SO MANY templates on him that i don't know what race he actually started as.
The Kids character, at one point gained blind sight from the warped touched template, then his eyes fell out. He got himself killed by shooting a magic missile at the inside wall of a extra-dementional cage, the missile bounced back and forth off the walls hitting him over a hundred times until he laid bleed out. He got himself disintegrated by a trap on a drawer at the bottom of a dresser.
We used a ring of wishes to revive him, told him over a ten minute discussion to not touch the drawer, just move the dresser so we could get to the hole it was covering. He assures us he understands, then he says after me saying " Cody just move the dresser don't touch the drawer" i open the drawer" and dies again. ( btw he was the reason i kept getting agitated while he played with us, although looking back it was kinda funny. )
god its all coming back to me...
Lets see there was the time where we fell down a trap and the only cleric in the group got his hands cut in half down the middle. and couldn't cast anything.
The Endless side quest, that sometimes i didn't want to do but was rail roaded into over and over. The constant and long rules arguments over rules he would change to suit his needs and then when the benefited us change them again.
Or the obvious favoritism towards the female players at the table, when there were female players ( they didn't usually stay around that long )
The fact that dice rolls ABSOLUTLY didn't matter, your going to get hit and its going to hurt. But not enough to kill you.. oh no pc death wasn't a option unless you died and didn't say anything for a few turns and then when he finally got back to you and you told him you'd been dead for a few minutes and there's no way he can change the dmg to revive you. To get captured and... just slightly less so your character gets to keep living and experience the torture once again.
And how can i forget that moments when the dm would hold a grudge against you for avoiding or killing something without it really being difficult and completely go around something he had planned, just to kill your character for trying to be a stronger than the mobs we fight. The best example is when we are fighting a giant awakened druid tree with a scythe and tramples us, over and over and over making full attacks constantly and then a quick ling just appears and steals my spell components. Rendering me useless in a possible tpk. Cause i of course keep all of my Spell components in belt pouches.
In fact i just where belts, nothing else. All over my body each of them is filled to the brim with pouches that hold me spell components.
Its not like i have a bag of holding or something!
The Random encounters with walls that attacked us!
Hmmm what else... The ever constant threat of being one of his sexu@l fantasy's he would somehow play out in the game in a ENTIRELY inappropriate way. Grimlock slave who enjoys his job a little to much, drow dungeon, elf male prisoner ( pc ) you do the math.
I'm going to stop myself there and go get a beer.

Quit a group because the GM and one of the players are married.
This leads to him getting to create and apply a homebrew template to an overpowered character who keeps getting more overpowered the higher in levels he gets.
At level one, his strength was 23. My wife and I, however, had to make generic characters.
So many things I could go on with this particular guy and his overpoweredness about.
Now that my mind is on it, I think I'll split a beer with Hackett.

Yeah, whenever I run a 3.X game, my rule is that if your character gets killed, you may create a replacement character at the same level, with just as many XP. In fact, you get a share of XP for the battle in which your character was killed. That way you can keep progressing. My justification was that creating a character in 3.X is so much work, you EARN the right to keep your levels. Besides, most of the character deaths in my 3.X campaigns - and there were many - were my fault as DM for making the encounters so difficult. And when running a big adventure, such as Red Hand of Doom, the characters MUST progress or they'll soon be out of their depth and die.
Now energy drain, on the other hand...

I know I shouldn't, but I must ask, because I really have to know:
What's the appropriate way to play out a sexual fantasy in a roleplaying game? And I mean the kind of roleplaying game where a bunch of friends sit around a table pretending to be knights and elves and wizards, not the kind that involves lovers and pretending to be naughty nurses or schoolgirls and principals.
Because I just can't think of any way to play out sexual fantasies in Pathfinder or D&D that would be appropriate.
Maybe I'm a shy, prudish prude, but neither do I want to let any of my buddies know what my favourite perverted fantasy is, nor do I want to know theirs. And I really don't want them to roleplay it at a table. I mean, get a room! And a willing participant.
Sorry, what were we talking about? Ah, yes: Did you clean your eyes, ears, and brain with industrial strength disinfectant each time this pervert told you how much he'd like it to get spanked by strict drow priestesses?
Personally, I'd have a bucket of cold water nearby when the guy's around, just in case.

Player characters all split off to different rooms at the brothel and players proceed to play erotic Pictionary for the other players to guess what their character is up to.
GM has the right to roll on the random encounter table and amend final sketches appropriately. At least, that's how I'd play it.

Personally, I'd have a bucket of cold water nearby when the guy's around, just in case.
Well first keep in mind a sexual fantasy need not get to graphic levels of details. A example would be, a girl has always been the good girl. She decided to play a rogue. Her character is very much a bad girl, she uses her looks and body to get what she wants. Why climb walls and sneak into a house when you can be invited in?
Then there is also sexual and romantic fantasies can often have their lines blurred as well. What someone might call a sexual fantasy someone else might call a romantic fantasy or something else etc.

Fascinating. The differences between individuals and genders as to what constitutes sexual fantasy and activity continue to amaze.

I think the line is the need to roleplay out the specifics and minute by minute details of a night's conquest. That, in my opinion, does not belong at a gaming table.

And in that case I'm not sure a table is the best venue. (Lack of padding, and all that....)

We have different definitions of words, then: When I read "play out a fantasy" in the P&P RPG sense of playing out, I consider it to be in great detail. Otherwise it's "handwaving a fantasy".
To wit: "I accept the sensuous fey maiden's offer to follow her to her placid pool and make love to her, trying to be passionate, enthusiastic and creative." is handwaving it (though going into a bit of basic detail).
"I go with her to her boudoir and then I * her * and then tell her to * my * and then I * her *ily while I * her * and she * my * and then I * her and * her until she *" or something like that is playing it out.
I'm not saying I'm against characters with active sex lives, characters that live out their fantasies. But I'm firmly in the handwaving camp when it comes to how much detail I need or want for the actual proceedings.
Especially if everyone at the table is male (which is the case in our games). Not that I want women go into detail about what their character does to the strapping lad, but if a guy describes what his strapping lad does to some vixen, or, even worse, what his vixen character does to some strapping lad, it gets extra icky.

I hear bedrooms are perfect for that kind of stuff :)
That's mostly low-level stuff, or even for regular citizens with just NPC levels. For heroes, especially higher-level ones with PC and maybe even PrC class levels, it's not always the best encounter area. Not that you can't have great high-level campaigns there, but a lot of high-level characters prefer planar adventures.
(Insert obligatory wink wink nudge nudge)

Why the double standard?

I can't speak for the OP, but for me it's a combination of cognitive dissonance (the stereotypical male gamer not usually looking like the vixen in question) and sympathetic embarrassment (the stereotypical male gamer being *clueless* regarding non-porn amatory encounters). I remember one gentleman who, while playing a female cleric of Aphrodite, took great relish in describing how his character was carving a wooden sex toy, and how his character was going to be using it that night. (The DM gave his character splinters.) Fortunately, I was playing an LE Hecate-worshiping gish in the game, and was easily able to roleplay my disgust with the whole thing.

I was merely saying about great detail is explicit and graphic description. You can do a lot and then fade to black after the passionate kissing starts and they start to undress. At that point everyone knows whats going to happen next. That was what I meant by not going into great detail.

I was more referring to what KaeYoss said about sexual fantasies. A sexual fantasy does not need be explicit and or bad for gaming. You can add them to the game in a tasteful manner, was my point. Of course it depends a lot on how one defines sexual fantasy too I imagine.

I only have one word for that, Splinters... just saying, wood is not a good idea.

2) Doesn't matter, No murdering children in my games. You'd be a level 1 commoner with all stats at 6 or something like that. Sure, you'd be invincible, but you'd have no useful abilities. And nobody would listen to you, because you'd be a little brat.
Tell you what: I officially include you in my gaming group now, as the invincible child. You are a level 1 commoner, with 6 in every ability score. The heroes, who won't bother with children, have met you once and ignored you, and as a child you cannot influence the outcome of the campaign, or indeed anything that happens, in any way.
And of course, you don't earn XP for playing hide and seek or stuff like that. You'll get your first level of an actual class, and actual ability scores and all that, when your character comes of age, which will be about a decade after the campaign's conclusion.
There! Don't bother to tell me about what your character does, because it doesn't matter. And no, you can't get a dog who can, with a series of barks, communicate that there are people in trouble over in the old mines or anything like that!
:P
Ok, Ill just sit in the corner and play with Mr. Nixon. Wait, have you seen Mr Nixon? Where are you Mr. Nixon?

It's one of those things that really depends on the group dynamic...sometimes it can add a lot, other times it's somewhere the far side of creepy.

Skeezy goes both ways. I've DMed for more than my share of players who've played utter whores, sometimes very... ah... creative whores. And as the DM I get all the whining and pouting if I don't go along with it, then even more whining if I do anything that seems like punishment or retaliation. It's been enough for me to walk at least once.

Suddenly I'm reminded of the roleplaying scene from Family Guy :-)

Reddevil |

well its as simple as see the direction the players are interested in, and then letting it go. A little romance is nice in a good rpg, but once the characters/npc's get to the "bedroom" its time to handwave it. if the players want to decide "how" they did it, that can be done on there time. No campyness needed. any other weird stuff is left up to what it maybe, and if it offends anouther play because of it over the topness then it just isn't right for that table and it is stated then and there.

Whoa. Slow down there, big fella.
You only get one standard action, one move action, and one swift action per round in this game. And you don't get to automatically declare all of your ability checks, skill checks, and saving throws successful. That's what dice are for...
Now roll for initiative, nice and slow...
