I am building a party-aiding character and I was looking at the "Order of the dragon" cavalier's abilities. His second level ability "Aid Allies" says the following:
At 2nd level, whenever an order of the dragon cavalier uses the aid another action to assist one of his allies, the ally receives a +3 bonus to his armor class, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check. At 8th level, and every six levels thereafter, this bonus increases by an additional +1.
Does this mean the +3 bonus is on top of the +2 aid bonus already given? Usally with replacement abilities it specifically states "rather than the normal" when referring to replacing a bonus.
Thanks
Matt

With "Swift Aid" I figured the bonuses from that replace the ones from the core when used. With a class ability increasing a bonus I always assume it replaces the core ability since its designed to improve it.
Makes sense. For sure, could have been nice if the feat stated "half the usual bonus" or something similar.
In this way, one could use a Order of the Dragon Cavalier to buff as a swift action with a +2 at level 8 and a +3 at higher levels.
I guess I will houserule it this way.

I had a rules question about the Order of the Dragon's 2nd level ability. Is it +3 to all of "armor class, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check" or choose one? For example, you use aid another on an ally, and the ally gets +3 to whichever in that list applies first?
RAW isn't as clear as it could be.

It replaces, which I thought was pretty clear tbh.
I wouldn't say that it's obvious at all -- the text doesn't sat "instead of" or "replaces" anywhere, and unnamed bonuses stack.
If I'm going to give up an entire full-attack to buff one of one ally's attacks (or AC versus one hit), I sure as hell better be getting more than a +4 bonus.
-- With a full-attack while Hasted at 8th, I could make three trip attempts versus the baddie to grant a +4 bonus to everybody in the party making melee attacks against it.

Bold mine.
It's safe to say the bonus applies to whichever ability applies to the action you are aiding. For example, if you are aiding your ally while he is attacking, the +3 would apply to his attack roll. It wouldn't make sense to apply the bonus to any of the other options. (Although it would be nice if I could aid my ally by giving him +3 to his AC while he attacks).
I can see what you're saying, as it may be unclear what check to apply the bonus to if more than one of those categories applies to the task at hand, but I honestly can't think of a task that would combine multiple checks in a single round to complete. If it ever came up in my game, I would allow the bonus to be applied to any and all checks that are necessary to perform the task the PCs want to complete.

First, I don't see any bold. :)
Second, can you normally aid another a saving throw? How does one do that? That is part of what is making me think that this use of aid another would apply to the first of any of those things to happen...

or
there it is.
you pick what you want to aid another with, "I will Aid _____ with their to hit" "or I attempt to protect _______ giving them a +_ to their AC"etc.
Aid another versus saving throws are a bit weirder, but with Heal you can do it for disease checks, or Aid another to help the rogue jump out of the way of a trap, etc.
also: derp necro, disregard, was looking for info on Dragon Cavaliers.
