Male Human Fighter 6 (Polearm Fighter)

Remembering his command to guard the door, Fredrich attacks the creature directly in front of him.

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28Lucern Hammer Power attack
1d12 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24LH Damage

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21 LH Power attack
1d12 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20LH Damage

Frederich makes large rents in the mounds surface, the plant creature burbles with what might be pain.

Female Human (Dunael) Ranger/Rogue/Fighter 3/2/1 (Ra, Ro, Ra, Ro,Ra,Ft)

Targeting the creature that presents the most immediate threat, the archer releases two more quick shots

Rapid Shot:
Attack:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
Damage:1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Attack:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
Damage:1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

And damn! That Friedrich is a pulverizing powerhouse!

I just realised that William has miscalculated his attacks with brass knuckles..the +1 magical bonus does not stack with the masterwork to hit bonus

William steps up to the badly damaged mound his fist assuming a coating of frost as he swings at the verdant creature.

Elaemental Fist(water)1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

Damage 1d8 + 3 + 2d6 ⇒ (7) + 3 + (6, 5) = 21

The mound slumps into dormancy.

Layjiani's arrows sink deep into the other mound which is looking distinctly tattered now.In reply it lashes out with a single tentacle at both Frederich and Kegmar just as Eltariel buffs the dwarf

on Frederich 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19

on Kegmar 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17

However it fails to connect with either target.

Well waited long enough for the rest

Once again Kegmar swings his Dorn Dergar with little effect.

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

Round 3
Frederich 20
Aude 18
William 14
Layjiani 14-
Eltariel 9
Shambling mound 6
Kegmar 2

Female Human Cleric of Pharasma 6

Seeing the combat going well , Aude does not thinh necessary to waste her spells

Male Human Fighter 6 (Polearm Fighter)

Fredrich repeats his performance, stepping 5' to his left to bring both creatures within reach of his hammer. If the one on his rights dies he will save his second attack for the one on the left.

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14 LH Attack
1d12 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25 LH Damage
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25 LH Attack
1d12 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17 LH Damage

Female Human (Dunael) Ranger/Rogue/Fighter 3/2/1 (Ra, Ro, Ra, Ro,Ra,Ft)

Stepping agily to allow for the movement of her allies, Layjiani continus to provide support with her bow, and two more fast arrows fly into the melee

Rapid Shot:
Attack:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29
Damage:1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Attack:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Damage:1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Fredericks move causes his first blow to go slightly awry but the second smashes into the still active mound and it too slumps into dormancy.

FIGHT OVER.

Female Human Cleric of Pharasma 6

'Anyone want some healing ? '

Since Aude will check , please tell me out of game how many Hp you are missing

Male Human Fighter 6 (Polearm Fighter)

Fredrich takes a moment to catch his breath. Sighing he wipes his brow with a cloth, then taking his boot tries to clean the vegetable matter from his Hammer.

"Salad anyone", he states with a wry grin.

Female Elf Druid 3 / Wizard 3

"I do not think any of us took any blows," Eltariel responds. "Fredrich, that was very impressive. Let's see what we have in here."

800xp each for the mounds

Searching the hut you find the following equipment:

2 wheelbarrows,
11 long-handled shovels
8 short-handled shovels
6 rakes,
4 rock pickaxes
7 hoes
20 ceramic pots in good enough condition to be used for planting
8 bags of cave soil
a rusty pair of shears
6 small gardening shovels
4 trowels
A 15-foot pole with a serrated blade lashed to the edge, used for pruning high limbs

You expected Gold and Jewels in a Garden Shed?

There is an unlocked door leading into the other portion of the shed and after taking the normal precautions you open it.

This room contains eight figures lying on mats of straw. They are a group of haggard-looking human males, with scrubby beards and filthy hair. They wear dirty rags, and have the half-starved look of prisoners. They barely stir when you enter.

Female Elf Druid 3 / Wizard 3

"Oh my ... we need to get these poor people out of here," Eltariel murmurs. She will use the wand of lesser vigor to help revive them and distribute her trail rations - not too much food each, as they probably cannot handle much. She'll use her heal skill to assess each one.

Heal (prisoner #1): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Heal (prisoner #2): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Heal (prisoner #3): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Heal (prisoner #4): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Heal (prisoner #5): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Heal (prisoner #6): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Heal (prisoner #7): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Heal (prisoner #8): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

Then see if any of them can give us any further information ...

Prisoners 3.6 and 7 recover sufficiently under your ministrations to be able to converse with you.

They readily admit to having been memebers of a smuggling ring who occupied these caverns until the bugbears took over 3 months ago.In addition they tell you that they have seen a Treant in the Garden but do not seem to be aware that he is the leader.

Finally they promise you riches aplenty if you will rescue them.

Female Human Cleric of Pharasma 6

Aude will assist Eltariel in her healing
Assist 11d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Assist 21d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Assist 31d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Assist 41d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Assist 51d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Assist 61d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Assist 71d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Assist 81d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

"Just to check, did your guards have any problems with the mounds of vegetation when bringing you food and water and do you have any samples of this food or water left ? "

Just in case : Sense Motive 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17

Aude's assistance helps restores prisoners 5 and 8 to a semblence of health

Female Elf Druid 3 / Wizard 3

"We can and will get you out of here, but I would advise you do not attempt to leave yet: There's a treant out there somewhere who is less than friendly and has poisoned the well of a nearby village, and the current occupants of this cavern have yet to be dealt with."

She pauses a moment, pondering how to deal with the smugglers as her duty as a dignitary of the city would normally be to arrest them. On the other hand, they have suffered badly at the hands of the monsters, and may be encouraged to pursue more honest professions.

"We'll deal with them, and return to escort you out of here when we return," she adds.

The prisoners accept your words though yopu get the feeling they are not entirely enamoured of staying here any longer.

My posts will be slightly curtailed as my PC died this morning..hope to be back asap with full function but for now I'm reduced to my laptopand posting from work

where do you wish to go from here.

From outside the shed you can see two distinct patches of vegetation to the south west between you and the grove of trees.

Female Elf Druid 3 / Wizard 3

Clarification: Are they trees or mushrooms, given that we are underground?

Female Human Cleric of Pharasma 6

Once outside :
'Eltariel , I saw no sense of infection in them. It is strange they were left alive while the villagers were transformed '

You'll need to get closer to the vegetation to see what it is.

The Prisoners it should be said show signs of repeated poisoning and curing..on a daily basis you would think.

Male Human Fighter 6 (Polearm Fighter)

Fredrich stands by waiting for the next action. He knows little of healing beyind a tourniquet or field dressing.

Female Elf Druid 3 / Wizard 3

"All right ... let's approach with caution. Layjiani?"

The scout nods her understanding and moves off towards the patches of vegetation stoppiong to observe them once she has a clearer view.

Layjiani.

To your Right

Spoiler:
This is one of the several patches of underground vegetation. The purple light makes the foliage alternately look black or blue. You see a stand of large, odd pine trees covered in moss, a small garden patch that might be herbs, and a small group of odd cacti towards the southeastern edge of this plot.

To your Left

Spoiler:
This patch of vegetation is dominated by a stand of oversized poppies, they are as large as sunflowers and resplendent with shades of aquamarine and blue. There are a few other odd plants, including a tall palm tree dotted with green coconuts. There is a strange smell here, an unpleasant musky scent of decay. The ground is dotted with what appears to be guano.

Female Human (Dunael) Ranger/Rogue/Fighter 3/2/1 (Ra, Ro, Ra, Ro,Ra,Ft)

Concentrating Layjiani looks closer to determine all she can about the various plants she sees.
Knowledge (Nature):1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 Unless you already rolled this for her and that's what she saw?

She then calls back just loud enough to describe what she's seen and then proceeds to move cautiously to her right, determined to investigate the strange cacti further. She keeps wary of all the plants in this strange place though and keeps and arrow knocked in her bow.

Don't know why I never thought of this before, but next item Layjiani wants Eltariel to make is an continuous item of the Message cantrip. Don't think it would work the same if Eltariel cast it on Layjiani, no?

Female Elf Druid 3 / Wizard 3

I like that idea ... maybe make several for the party!

Female Human (Dunael) Ranger/Rogue/Fighter 3/2/1 (Ra, Ro, Ra, Ro,Ra,Ft)

Sounds good to me. But what's the delay on the game? Everyone all good?

Male Human Fighter 6 (Polearm Fighter)

Good question. It does kind of drag a bit. Wellard what can we do to pick up the pace a little?

I'm waiting for you guys to tell me what you are doing after Layjiani gave you the info in the spoilers.

I will not dictate party actions so it's up to you guys to set the pace

Female Elf Druid 3 / Wizard 3

Eltariel will lead the group forward, staying a respectable distance behind Layjiani as she heads toward the cacti-plot.

Male Human Fighter 6 (Polearm Fighter)

Fredrich follows closely behind. His hammer might be needed.

I really wasn't complaining I like this game, and don't want to see it go away due to lost momentum. I was really asking what we, as players could do to make the game better :-). I think sometimes, especially in PbP when there is often a lapse in the action, we as players think we're waiting for you and vice versa. Maybe a gentle prompt that you're waiting on us to do something might help?

You move towards the strange underground garden wary as ever . Nothing leaps at you from the darkness and you make it to the area you were heading for without incident.

More details when I am at home.

You arrice at the cacti and find them to be completely unremarkable..

What are your intentions?

I'm assuming we've checked both patches of cacti?

"Let us move towards the grove of trees", Fredrich suggests.

Female Elf Druid 3 / Wizard 3

"Very strange."

Eltariel examines the subterranean vegetation carefully.

Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (8) + 15 = 23

Male Dwarf Fighter1/Alchemist5
Fredrich Mustenburg wrote:

I've been real bad on several of my PbPs over the holidays, having a little trouble finding out where to make a meaningful post besides "Kegmar follows the others" or similar...

Kegmar follows the others, his eyes widening as he observes the giant poppies, wondering what kind of taste they might add to a dwarven brew, before he finally realizes the high odds they would be poisonous.

Eltariel spends some minutes examining the assorted flora in the right hand patch.

Theres a herb garden..the cacti and the similarly unremarkable pine trees..unremarkable that is if were not for the moss growing thickly upon them..

As she bends to inspect it something makes her look round just as three fat, bloated bird like creatures fly clumsily out of the gloom that surrounds you. They give a piping call as they home in on Aude, Frederich and William.

Creatures 24
Eltariel 23
Aude 18
Layjiani 17
Kegmar 15
Frederich 13
William 11

On Aude 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 vs touch AC10

on Frederich 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14 vs touch AC13

on William 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18 vs touch AC17

All three creatures succeed in grappling with their targets sinking strong claws into their clothing.

Female Human Cleric of Pharasma 6

Not panicking yet , Aude will attack with her dagger
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 191d4 ⇒ 3

Male Human Fighter 6 (Polearm Fighter)

Not to be a pain...but no perception to notice the birds, and allow for Attacks of opportunity? Also even if they hit, shouldn't they have to make a CMB roll to complete the grapple? May be a special attack, but just wondering

Fredrich shocked at the birds sudden appearance attempts to throw the creature from his body.

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22 CMB

Female Human (Dunael) Ranger/Rogue/Fighter 3/2/1 (Ra, Ro, Ra, Ro,Ra,Ft)

An arrow already knocked, Layjiani silently takes aim on the creature attacking Aude and tries to sink two quick arrows in it.
Rapid Shot:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 111d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
Damage:1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 121d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

At the same time she looks closely around her for any other sign of danger
Perception:1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20including Favored Terrain bonus

Female Elf Druid 3 / Wizard 3

Wellard normally makes perception checks for us for this kind of thing - you should hear the nasty things he says about our perception scores sometimes as well when he doesn't surprise us!

Eltariel takes a step clear if she is in range of the bloated birds and with a word and gesture unleashes flight of glittering bolts of unerring accuracy at the one holding Aude.

Casting magic missile, damage = 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (3, 4, 2) + 3 = 12 force damage. How big are they?

The combination of trees, the low light and the size of the creatures(tiny) would have made perception difficult to say the least

Eltariel

Spoiler:
you recognise the creatures as stirges

Eltariel's spell annihilates the creature on Aude who then stabs the one attached to Frederich.

Layjiani swiftly changes target sending a shaft through Williams attacker which loosens it's hold and falls twitching to the ground.

Waiting for Kegmar

Female Elf Druid 3 / Wizard 3

"Stirges!" Eltariel snorts with contempt.

OK waited long enough

Kegmar swings from the shoulder...

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26

and smacks the stirge out of sight into the gloom from whence it came

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

From the south towards the poppy patch come the sounds of numerous whirring wings and a veritable swarm of the loathsome blood suckers hoves into view about 60 feet away.

Female Elf Druid 3 / Wizard 3

Eltariel readies the wand of burning hands.

"If you have anything that can effect a swarm, Kegmar, now is the time to use it."

Female Human (Dunael) Ranger/Rogue/Fighter 3/2/1 (Ra, Ro, Ra, Ro,Ra,Ft)

Quickly snatching out two alchemist's arrows Layjiani rapidly aims and lets fly
Attacks:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 121d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 261d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Plus Alchemists Fire damage. Although nothing has been said about it before, I have now included a -1 arrows for the specialty arrows to hit. Just seemed to make sense to me. Plus the -2 for rapid shot of course.

I said a veritable swarm..just meant a large number not a swarm as defined by RAW. There are 15 stirges present

You retain your initiative

New stirges initiative is1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24 ^^ second time in a row..Thankfully you get a free round of actions against them and they wont be able to attack till round 3 due to their relatively slow airspeed

Round1

Stirges 24 ..moved into visual range
Eltariel 23
Aude 18
Layjiani 17
Kegmar 15
Frederich 13
William 11
