Male Human Paladin / Shelyn - 2

Quickly grasping the gravity of the situation, Sir Winston goes to the trap door. "Quickly everyone down". "I'll bring up the rear, and if necessary hold them off as long as I can".

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

Snuffing his pipe with a word, Professor Rokannon hustles after Janiven through the trap door.

Last thing Ranin needs is more bad publicity, So down the trapdoor he goes, but he make sure he is the last one down.

Female Human Cleric of Iomedae 1

Sati grasps her holy symbol in her hand and nods before disappearing down the trap door.

"Morosino knows the way, follow him," says Janiven. "I'll conceal our tracks with a few bits of furniture and a tanglefoot bag. Don't try stopping to fight - they'll just keep on piling in until you're killed or captured."

The secret tunnel under Vizio's Tavern is rough-hewn and leads down along a 20-foot-long, 5-foot-wide hallway to a simple wooden door. The opposite side of the door has a wooden bar; as you all pass through, Janiven bars the door to help slow the sure-to-be-following Hellknights. Janiven then lights a sunrod. On the other side of the door is a sewer tunnel running to the left and right - Morosino points out the mark on the wall - an asymmetric 6-pointed star with a sword through the middle - indicating they should flee to the left. He tells you to look for these marks at every intersection, should you get separated from the group — the sword always points in the direction of the safe house they've established.

The sewer system here in Westcrown is a marvel of ancient engineering. Individual tunnels are buttressed and rarely more than 5 feet high, forcing the taller of you to stoop but not otherwise hindering most activity. Most tunnels are 10 feet wide, with a 3-foot-deep trench for sewage and water taking up half that width — even at peak flow the water level is an inch or more below the level of the walking side of the tunnel. These ledges are made of stone, but tend to be slimy.

Before you set off on your flight through the sewers, Janiven pushes aside a rock near the entrance to reveal a small hollow in the wall and sighs in relief. "Good," she says, "They're still here." She gathers several potion bottles, explaining that they won't have time to stop and rest as long as the Hellknights are after them, and splits the potions up among you, saying that they are healing potions - cure light wounds and there are enough for each of you to get three!

While you walk, Janiven explains, "Arael and I made these marks a few months ago when we explored the sewers. We marked all the intersections so our people could find their way through the sewers to our hideout."

As you travel, the noise of the Hellknights back at Vizio's Tavern diminishes, but Janiven is sure they'll follow.

"They might take a few minutes to search in the tavern, but some are going to follow us down here after they grab a lantern or make torches. They might even try to infiltrate the sewers ahead of us if they can guess our route. We need to keep moving."

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

Professor Rokannon accepts the potions gratefully, knowing that it's better to have them and not need them than vice versa.
With a muttered word and a gesture, he takes a moment to cast a defensive spell; just in case.

Mage Armor-- Gives subject +4 armor bonus.

The smell is incredible. To Rokannon, it's a brand new sensation; for a minute he is powerfully tempted to light his pipe again, but since there is an outside chance the authorities could track them following the smell, he resists. For now.

He pulls out his Wayfinder and attempts to fix his orientation.
Survival: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 1 + 2 = 18
At least the Light feature works, he thinks, as he turns it on and carfully watches where he puts his feet...

Female Human Rogue 2

"Let's go, Estel says, nodding to the others and taking point at the front of the group. She quickly secretes the three potions about herself, thanking Janiven for them quickly, before heading off into the sewers.

Liberty's Edge

"Let me lead, I know the way," says Morosino. [b]"And, Sir, if you don't need the light, best not to give them anything to follow us by..."[b] The boy is feeling his way along, one hand on the wall, using the light cast by Janiven's sunrod.

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

"Is that right young man?" Professor Rokannon said archly.
"I had no idea that we would be invisible with only one light source."
Nevertheless he turns off his glowing Wayfinder and puts it away.

Female Human Cleric of Iomedae 1

Sati accepts the potions with a thanks, and rests a hand on her sword hilt as she follows behind Estel and Morosino.

"How far away is it?" she asks, glancing behind the group.

Male Human Paladin / Shelyn - 2

Sir Winston follows the group in the rear. He is not sure whether he is glad he is not wearing his armor in case he falls in, or upset because there might be combat. Oh well Shelyn will guide him.

Ranin takes his potions."...Thanks..."

Female Human Rogue 2

Standing just a little behind Morosino to let him lead, Estel turns her head to roll her eyes in agreement to the professor, before venturing forwards down the tunnel after the boy.

Sorry, a bit poorly and stayed in bed this morning...

Right, can I have a party order, please?

As best as I can gather from your comments, it's:

  • Morosino
  • Estel
  • Sati
  • Professor
  • Janiven
  • Sir Winston

And may I have an Acrobatics check from everyone, please? These ledges along the sides of the sewer tunnels are quite slippy!

Female Human Rogue 2

Can I have Ranindolf backing me up please?

Acrobatics Check 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

Male Human Paladin / Shelyn - 2

If it's possible to take 10 Sir Winston will do so. If not...

1d20 ⇒ 6 Acrobatics

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

People may take 10 with Acrobatics when just walking along, but not if you attempt to hurry or we get into combat.

And oops, forgot Ranindolf... if he's happy, he goes in between Estel and Sati.

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

Professor Rokannon proceeds deliberately.
Acrobatics: (take 10)+2=12

Ranin goes there without any fuss!

Acrobatics1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5

And Ranin's foot slips and he goes in with a resounding splash! No damage, but the stink... :)

Megan Robertson wrote:

Whaa?! Kersplash!...Opps...

Ranin tries to make his way back up to the ledge.

Male Human Paladin / Shelyn - 2

Sir Winston moves forward carefully to help Ranin up, wrinkling his nose at the smell. "Here let me help you". "Don't pull too hard now...easy goes".

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 Strength Check

Female Human Cleric of Iomedae 1

Sati takes a step forward, ready to give her assistance in case Sir Winston fails to pull Ranindolf up.

Sir Winston wrote:

1d20+3 Strength Check

Well thank you sir Ranin tries to wipe the nastiness off his arm but it doesn't amount to much, as he takes Sir Winston's arm as he helps him up...

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

Professor Rokannon pulls out his wayfinder and lights it up to inspect the damage.
"Tsk. Students pull such pranks all the time; fortunately I know a minor cleaning cantrip. Let us pause for a minute and let me get the effluvia off your face and hands at least."

Professor Rokannon mutters a soft word of power and waves his hand, and a number of small scrubbing bubbles start foaming their way across Ranindolph's face and hands, washing away the filth as they go...

Prestidigitation-- Among other things, can clean a one cubic foot area in a round.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

With Sir Winston's and the Professor's assistance, Ranindolf is soon back on his feet on the ledge and if not smelling much better, at least less slimy.

And the smelly trek goes on...

Quick question: Are you interested in playing out sewer encounters? The AP provides material for a good few and a fine long ramble around down here and I'm happy to run some if that's what you want... but to be honest if I was a player I would want to get out of here without further ado! What do you folks want?

Personally I find the AP's take forever on PbP's and would love to skip many encounters...unless there are some really flavorful one, and get to the "meat" of the story. As long as we don't fall behind on experience that is ;-).

Female Human Rogue 2

"Watch where you step, if we don't hurry up you'll get us all killed!" Estel whispers sharply, rolling her eyes at the clumsy oaf before following on after Morosino.

I would appreciate maybe one small encounter, I suppose the rest could be described over, although a sewer chase sounds fun I imagine it would work better on the table.

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

A maze/puzzle/chase works a lot better on tabletop than in a PbP. Go ahead and handwave it.

Estel Pantiel wrote:

"Sorry, Sorry..." Ranin rubs the back of his head in apology. He seems to have an air of being used to such treatment.

Whatever you want to do is fine with me Megan.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Thank you, folks. The objective of the exercise is to have fun!

After seeming hours of cautious movement in this dark, smelly maze Morosino suddenly calls a halt. Around a bend ahead you can hear voices.

"According to the last workman we met, there's nothing but an overflow cistern down there. We ought to turn back..." says one voice.

"Heck, you'll never make full Knight with that attitude. Attention to detail, don't you remember anything from your novitiate? They said check the sewers for rebels and that's what we'll do!" replies a second voice. Difficult to tell, but it sounds female.

"Who cares?" says a third voice. "I just want to get out of this stink, bathe and have a long, cold beer."

Female Human Rogue 2

Estel falls back into a crouch, waiting just behind Morosino, blade drawn and breath held in readiness.

Female Human Cleric of Iomedae 1

Sati takes a few steps back and covers her mouth with her hand. She places her other hand on the hilt of her sword.

Ranin stops and tries not to move. Its amazing that they haven't heard him coming already...

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

Professor Rokannon looks around for a hiding place.

Male Human Paladin / Shelyn - 2

Sir Winston takes a defensive pose, and waits for the next action.

Is there anywhere to conceal ourselves closeby. A side passage or a room we recently passed"?

I'll be out of the country on business from tomorrow morning till Thursday evening. Should have internet, but only later in the evening. don't want to hold up the game so post for character as needed.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

"Bah! It's too dark to see where I'm putting my feet," says the first voice. "And if you insist on going on, I don't want to fall in again!"

A flicker of light, then the steady glow of a lantern...

... and it is getting brighter as if whoever is holding it is coming towards the corner.

"All right, Grella. One more passage if we really must,"[b] says the voice that wanted a cold beer. [b]"But I don't think there's anything down here - we haven't even seen any rats for ages!"

Backlit by the lantern, a figure in a strange armour - all segmented and with flared shoulder-plates - appears, looking back at the rest of this group as she shouts "I still say we ought to do our job properly!"

If you wish to act now, please roll initiative, then state your intended action and provide necessary die rolls. Once everyone has posted (less Sir Winston, if he has not posted by my tomorrow morning I'll roll for him), I'll tell you what happens - and you have a round of surprise, so I'll not be rolling my initiatives just yet!

Still trying to stay still, Ranin whispers...
"Are they still there?"

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Baffled - I'm sure I posted here yesterday but it seems to have vanished! Oh well, try again...

"Oh, all right then," says the voice that wanted a cold beer. "If you insist, we'll check this next passage..."

Light flickers around the corner, then settles to a steady glow.

The female voice is heard again.

"We have a job to do, so we should just... do it!"

Still talking to the people behind, back around the corner, a figure in segmented armour with flaring shoulder plates appears, looking away from you.

OK. Initiatives, please. She's not paying attention to where she is going, so you get a surprise round. Please state what you wish to do and make appropriate die rolls. Once everyone has responded (or it's tomorrow morning my time, in which case I'll roll for anyone missing) I shall resolve actions.

Female Human Rogue 2

Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Assuming she's within 30ft Estel will sneak attack with her crossbow, otherwise she jumps them with her rapier. The attack rolls is the same, and as far damage goes I'll assume crossbow for now.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 61d8 + 1d6 ⇒ (7) + (4) = 11

Fail...

If these are dottati, Ranin delays his action till someone else attacks.

Then he moves forward between the enemies and the party, I assume blocking their path (or at least forcing them to jump into the...water.)

If Ranin is already between the party and the enemies he readies an action to attack anyone that tries to get past him.

Initiative 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

Attack:
Warhammer 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13/Damage1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Acid splash attack (ranged touch): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12 for a possible 1d3 ⇒ 3 points acid damage.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Ranindolf: The armour is the distinctive style worn by Hellknights of the Order of the Rack, not that of regular dottati.

Hmm. Better roll for my friendly NPCs:

Janiven: Initiative 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Morosino: Initiative 1d20 ⇒ 9

Initiative order so far for the surprise round is:-

  • Ranindolf
  • The Professor
  • Janiven
  • Morosino
  • Estel

I'll wait a bit in case anyone else wants to chip in, but will probably resolve the surprise round later today...

Male Human Paladin / Shelyn - 2

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 Initiative

Note: Any answers to Sir Winston's above question?

Female Human Cleric of Iomedae 1

Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Sati draws her sword and waits to see whether or not healing will be needed.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Sir Winston: This is a straight bit, with a T-junction at the end, it is from one side of this that the Hellknights are coming...

And let the fun commence...

Ranindolf steps forwards and catches the armoured figure a whallop with his warhammer. Rather to his surprise, the armour is nowhere as resistant as it looks... you reckon shaped boiled leather rather than the metal it appears to be!

The armoured figure stumbles and falls into the water, struggling up just in time for...

The Professor and his acid splash. She screeches and falls back into the water. The stench gets even worse as she thrashes.

Janiven looks aghast. "This isn't good..."

Morosino turns and bolts.

Estel fires her crossbow but the bolt flies wide of the mark and clatters off the wall.

Sati draws and stands ready...

Now for the first full round of combat

Hellknights initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 20

Initiative order is:

  • Ranindolf
  • Hellknights
  • The Professor
  • Janiven
  • Estel
  • Sati
  • Sir Winston

Please post action & appropriate die rolls, I'll resolve the round on Monday morning my time unless everyone's posted before then. The Hellknight in the water will be getting up, those round the corner will be scurrying round to join in the brawl... Note: you don't have to POST in initiative order, but I'll use it when summarising events.

Female Human Rogue 2

Estel will draw her rapier and move up to flank a Hellknight with Ranindolf.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 102d6 + 1 ⇒ (3, 6) + 1 = 10

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

Professor Rokannon will look for an opportunity to drop a Sleep spell on the Hellknights if they bunch up in a convenient two by two pattern.

Sleep-- Puts up to 4hd of creatures into magical sleep. Will save DC16.

If they don't, he will use an Hand of the Apprentice attack with his staff.
Hand of the Apprentice (Staff): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 for a possible 1d6 ⇒ 2 points of bludgeoning damage.

Female Human Rogue 2

That should be 12 there for Estel, missed the +2 flanking, not that it's likely to make much difference.
