Tables are always good too. I had to buy a d16 because of my random gem table (the DMG just happened to list 16 types of gems).

I can't get d16 in my country :(

I've finally found a store with d30 though.

Paizo used to carry them. (That's where I got mine)

They are fairly hard to find, probably because outside of my own custom chart I've never encountered anything that uses them. Talk about dice that get less love than the d12.

If you really want d16 you would probably have to order it online. I know Noble Knight Games in the US and The Dice Shop in the UK (I believe) carry them and have international shipping. Your local store might be able to order it, but if they need to order minimum quantities they probably won't order an odd die that no one else is likely to buy.

Yeah, this IS online. There's a single internet store that has them in my country, otherwise I have to import (= have to kill orcs, as my WBL won't allow me)

I use d12s all the time, actually, to randomly determine direction. Just roll a d12, and then treat the result as if you rolled an hour on a clock. The direction something goes is in the direction of the hour.

Hey! I do the same since AD&D!

A few years ago, I was DMing an AD&D game and had a player who's really a lunatic kind of guy. Had to roll a 13 to hit on this crucial moment.. rolled a 12 and was whining about how close it was. Turns out it was a d12. He never quite lived it down.

But I don't remember the d12 being used more in earlier editions..

I like the clock idea, never thought about it.

Since when do Katanas not just instantly kill upon a successful hit? There goes that Terrasque hunter Ranja I pointed out...

Since the edition change.

It's sad when they remove death effects just because of "game balance" when it's so clearly unrealistic to remove them.

Katanas miss?

I just want a d12 that is really a D6 in disguise. Actually I want 3 of them.

Plus a D4 that is really a D2 and a d10 that is actually a D5.

the best however would be the D8 that is in fact a D4.

I already have D20's that are percentals in disguise however.

You've missed a zero there surely?
Yes, sorry, Katanas are acutally d1000.

Finally, a use for my chiliahedron die...

Seriously, though, I generally replace d10s for d12s in everything except percentile rolls. It just bothers me, because of all the commonly used dice, d10s are the only ones that aren't actually evenly-sided polyhedra.

Hey! Another Uriel (Waves)!!!

Oh, and Katanas suck...I give them a D3.

:D

why would you want a d16? that's just the same as d4 d8 and that's it
instead get a d24 which is a d4 d6 d8 d12 pretty awesome is it not? the d20 is the d10 and d20 and there you got everything, 2 dices to rule them all!

Just get a d60, you'll never need another die again. The Babylonians knew this, and as every fantasy wonk should be aware: ancient civilizations always knew best!

(No, seriously, they recorded numbers in base 60; we still measure time and angles in their units.)

Well, for one thing, rolling multiple dice eliminates the option of rolling a 1.
The second issue is that you no longer have an equal chance at rolling any of the numbers, you get more of a bell curve.. so less chance of rolling an extreme.

if you talk about tejons or my post, you get us wrong

you use a d24 to emulate the other, not the other way around

to see what dice you can emulate, put your dice number in prim numbers, example 24 = 2*2*2*3 now you can create any combination of those 2*2 or 2*3 or so on, you simply have to divide by the rest and round up (always up, not down).

60 = 5*2*2*3 so lots of possibilites, d4 d6 d10 d12 d15 (if it would exist) d30 (does exist but not used) d20 and d60 of course

HOWEVER you can't get d8 with it!

Edit: you would need a d 120 to emulate everything usually used

I thought you were saying "why use X when you can just use Y + Z". Now that I reread your post, I can see what you were saying.

I've seen d100s before. A d120 would be even more.. interesting.. to roll.

the problem with d100 is that they are too round, you can't see very well what you've thrown. 2 d10 are faster to read and land. However the d100 is cool for a GM who wants to clear the battlefield.

well, dices are cool, I have them of all forms and colours (or at least I collect them in all forms and colours ^^). My tip, handcrafted wooden d6 from the Market in Bern/Switzerland. Getting a crazy high scores is possible.

Other than that, why don't they make other dices with spots? I really like to too ... tweak ^^ a d6 on a hardcover book with a blank pages (3-4) on it rolls roughly a whole turn. So if you have you hand open while rolling dice, if you see lots of spots, throw. It works! Not enough for guaranteed success, but better than average.

Richard, richard, like so much else in life for us guys, it's just the size that matters. :)

you can always use those a cubic feet big d6 es for little children, I think on thinkgeek.com they have a blow-up-d20 something else a lot of guys can relate to I heard ^^

I use 12 sided d4's. They roll better and if you drop one, you stand a chance of not maiming yourself if you tread on it!

well, everything is answered here:

:)

We used the d30 for spot checks in AD&D.

And by spot checks, I mean whether or not you were creating a spot that's wet between one's legs in stressful situations. Regardless of level, whenever a PC feels its thematically appropriate roll a d30 for a spot check. 1-14, you wet yourself. 16-30, you didn't soil your armor. 15? Well, you let loose your bowels too.

Oh, and Katanas did d10/d12 one handed and 2d6/2d8 when used two-handed in AD&D as well. It kinda is pretty lame that I had that memorized.

When someone asks about the game day and month I roll 1d12 for the month and 3d12-2 for the day (yeah, months with 34 days, this is a fantasy game!)
When something damages a character and i have to adjudicate a damage for that attack it is always a d12.
I roll d12 when deciding how many round until Quivering Palm kills you.
d12 isn't the most used dice but it is the most useful dice.

The d12 is a sad dice. It's uses are:

Barbarian hit dice
Dragon hit dice
Defender and Dragon Disciple hit dice

Greataxe damage

These are the only uses I can find for such a fine dice...

Back in 1st edition, they were basically only used for longsword damage vs. larger than man sized things. Because the longsword was the best one handed melee weapon, that actually ended up causing the die to be used quite a bit.

Now, it is sad that the die has such obscure uses, because it is a pleasure to roll a dodecahedron.

One potential great thing about the 12 sider is that if you have it, and a 20 sider, you don't need any of the other shapes of dice.

1d6 = 1d12/2
1d4 = 1d12/3
1d3 = 1d12/4
1d5 = 1d20/4
1d10 = 1d20/2

A regular katana is only a d1000 and does not suppress the Tarrasque's ability to regenerate from anything. You're thinking of a masterwork katana (or +1 and above, but seriously, only King Solomon, Mansa Musa, or Marcus Licinius Crassus, MAYBE could have afforded one of those).

Since katanas are automatically masterwork, I am referring to a "double masterwork" katana, or anything made by Hattori Hanzo.

Some characters are unworthy of the Katana. Its them who miss.
