Mr. James Jacobs,

I have heard but don't recall where it is written that racial hit dice starts at half max. Is this so? If it is, where is it written for future reference?

Additionally would this stipulation if true apply to eidolons who are bound to summoners?

It's not bad so much as it is all the way underwhelming.

What you think about a deluxe/remasterized/revised (and bigger) version of Core Rulebook (or something like this) with all the classes (Core + APG + Magus + Gunslinger), racial rules, combat maneuvers (Core + APG), and some rules simplified/revised (like skills appeared once at the blog)?

I think it would make at least the experienced players very, very happy.

James, where in Golarian are grippli found? I mean, as a society. The Mwangi Expanse, maybe? And what gods do they primarily worship? I imagine that Gozreh or the Green Faith would be a safe bet, but I'm just guessing.

I think that such a book would be too big for us to really deal with, and we'd get a lot of angry people complaining about shipping costs.

Alternately, this sounds like something like a 2nd edition, which isn't something we're ready to do yet.

Southern Garund. They'd worship Gozreh for sure, and perhaps some of the Eldest of the First World. Maybe even a few of their own deities.

Yeah yeah, it would be expansive, but certainly, many would pay. I'm just not sure if is a good business idea. But a pdf edition, or at least an official compilation of races, classes, archetypes, feats and spells still interesting. Think about it in the future.

And don't see as a 2nd edition, but as an Advanced one (any mention to AD&D is purely coincidental hahahaha).

Yes! But organized by topic/subject and not by book. An online version would be great too!

Something like the index in the PRD, but to all options we can make in the game (races, classes, archetypes, etc), and if possible, in a pdf/book.

Whether or not you roll your eidolon's hp or take average depends on the GM, not the rules for standard monsters from the Bestiary.

So Grippli and Vanara are both Southern Garund? Any other races we know of live down there? Humans I assume, cause of the massive amount on Golarion, but besides them?

James Jacobs:

I have only the books to go by when I make such statements. Of course a GM can have you roll or take the average. A GM can tell you your PC is purple with pink polka dots. :D 'The NPC' was asking where the reference was listed and asked if that reference applied to Eidolons. With no rules to the contrary it would apply to Eidolons.

With that said, I believe it is a convention rather than a rule to use average HPs and if a player wants to roll his eidolons hps I see no problem with that. He is just as likely to roll low as to roll high.

Technically the average roll comes from the average of the die's range; that is, the highest and the lowest result added together, then divided by two.

Personally, I always remember it by saying that the average die result is always equal to half of the maximum result +.5. Mathematically, this will always work because of the communicative property of multiplication and addition; it doesn't matter in what order you multiply or add things, you'll always get the same result. In the example of the d6, you have two numbers that you're averaging together (1 and 6), so you could do 6 + 1 = 7, 7 / 2 = 3.5 or you can do 1 / 2 = .5, 6 / 2 = 3, and 3 + .5 = 3.5!

I think Lini would be the best candidate for Country Music.

Only if the GM is feeling lenient.

Could you elaborate please, as that comment seems somewhat at odds with the Improvised Weapon rules. Would you not be able to use the haft as an improvised 'club - 1d6' type weapon for example?

Improvised Weapons wrote:

Because such objects are not designed for this use, any creature that uses an improvised weapon in combat is considered to be nonproficient with it and takes a –4 penalty on attack rolls made with that object. How wouldn't the haft of a reach weapon not be similar to an improvised weapon, effectively an improvised 'club' or 'staff'? Why wouldn't a weapon haft work, yet a similar item (such as an oar or broomhandle) be treated differently given they are almost identical (except one has a sharp bit of metal)

Assuming you feel the point still stands, wouldn't the catch off guard still work?

On that note, one can threaten with an 'improvised melee weapon' right? Only unarmed attacks don't threaten?

Can you Power Attack with an Improvised weapon?

Can you use the Pushing Assault feat?

1) Does a Vivisectionist's Sneak Attack class feature also include Prestige Classes, as "classes that grant sneak attack" ( Thread that discusses this in detail )

Hi James: My question relates to the Harrow Deck. As the Varisians were (long ago) slaves of the Thassilonian Empire, would it be correct to assume that the Harrow Deck has its origins in Thassilon and that the cards may have some deeper significance than simply in fortune telling? Just as the Tarot is now believed to have been a means to hide a heretical Christian message during a time of persecution in the middle ages, with the cards representing specific concepts. Was the Harrow Deck originally some way for the slave peoples who became the Varisians to hand down their beliefs or history in a hidden code to avoid persecution by their Thassilonian masters - or am I just being way to complicated?

4)How different stat wise are the Monkey Goblins to the standard Goblins?

5)If there is a new bird race what kind of bird is it based on and were is it from?

6)Will we ever see more powerful(CR4+) types of Goblins like with shapechanging abilities, strange magical abilities, etc. like from the myths?

7)Are Snow Goblins actually a different species of Goblin?

James, some questions about Wyroot (I hope you can help with that):

1) If I attack with a Wyroot Weapon and confirm a critical hit do I:

a) get to make normal weapon damage (including sneaks and stuff) and get my Ki/Arcane Pool point stored in the weapon

b) inflict critical weapon damage (including all other modifiers) and get my Ki/Arcane Pool point

c) inflict NO damage at all and only the Ki/Arcane Pool point

2) Do I get the Ki/Arcane Pool point when I Coup de Grace someone? I'm not really confirming a critical hit, I'm just dealing critical damage.

And if c) of Question 1 is right AND it works on CdG:

3) If I CdG someone, without dealing damage, must the victim do a Fort Save against DC 10+Damage (which would be 0 so DC 10) or die?

I've asked a couple of question elsewhere that I haven't gotten answered yet. (Well, one technically has but I like answers from the devs.)

For those he didn't mention back then, Cayden's associated with the hound (snerk) and Shelyn with the songbird.

Iomedae, Irori, Nethys and Torag are less obvious, but Iomedae feels warhorse-y to me (strong, loyal, associated with knights and chivalry), but could also fit with the falcon or hawk, and Nethys seems like a cat-guy (Osironi wise-eye, obviously! Fickle, self-assured and totally untrustworthy, also commonly associated with spellcasters familiars.). Torag *also* feels like a hound guy (all loyal and protective). Irori? Eh. Praying mantis (patient, precise and oh-so-deadly) seems appropriate, but Achaekek's already all up in that. But that's just my notions. I'm sure that some animals pull double duty, and other dieties (like Groetus, in James' list) could literally give a rat's bum about 'holy animals.'

Hi James, got a question for you:
Some folks were recently talking about the Pistolero archetype for the gunslinger. Seems they get a class feature that's called "Pistol Training", comes at the same level that the base gunslinger gets "Gun Training", has a similar effect, etc... Yet it doesn't say "This ability replaces Gun Training" or any such thing. Would you happen to know whether this was intentional, or merely an oversight? Apparently it's the deciding point on whether Pistolero stacks with another archetype, so we've got "doesn't say it replaces Gun Training" versus "obviously it's supposed to".

Do you know what the intent was on this one? Thanks!

I've always rolled my hit points as a character in a campaign, and my players in games I run almost always roll their hit points (I generally allow them to reroll 1s).

Eidolons aren't monsters. They're controlled by the player, as extensions OF the character. As with animal companions. The method by which an eidolon's hp (or an animal companion's for that matter) are determined should be the same by which the actual character's hp are determined.

Hmmm... technically, I guess you could... STILL... the whole concept makes me a little nervous, since reach weapons are balanced by the fact that while they let you attack at reach and thus attack foes that generally can't fight back (assuming best case scenario where you're fighting a creature without reach) the fact that if someone gets up close your weapon is more or less useless. Further... something like a club or a staff works because you're swinging a stick with momentum being the strongest at the end; that's the part that does the damage. Hitting someone with the side of a stick isn't as impactful.

Frankly, the GM should have say over what can and can't be used as an improvised weapon. A table leg or a chair or a frozen fish? Probably. A handful of noodles or a flimsy reed flute or a pillow? Nope. And I think that saying a pole arm's haft doesn't work well as a weapon works as well. I would probably allow you to use it as an improvised weapon to trip someone, but probably NOT to do damage to them. It's a GM call in the end, but for something like Pathfinder Society Org Play... I'd say no. It's needless complication that abuses the intent of the rules.

On to the other questions:

On that note, one can threaten with an 'improvised melee weapon' right? Only unarmed attacks don't threaten?
Yes, you can make attacks of opportunity with improvised weapons.

Can you Power Attack with an Improvised weapon?
Yes.

Can you use the Pushing Assault feat?
As normal, please cite books where you're pulling non-core feats. I don't have all our rulebooks memorized. You could use Pushing Assault as long as it's a 2 handed improvised weapon.

1) Yes. Sneak attack dice pretty much always stack when you get them, regardless of what class or race grants the dice.

2) Nope. A magic weapon's enhancement bonuses and abilities only work when it's used as intended as a weapon.

3) Under "Try Again" for Knowledge, it says "No." So... no. That said, I would allow a player to roll a new knowledge check for a topic he previously failed if he gains a greater bonus (such as by gaining skill ranks or Intelligence, or because he's using a well-stocked library). That's a GM fiat ruling though, and if your GM doesn't want to do that, you need to respect that decision.

4) All sneak attacks count as precision damage. But know what? We don't actually in the book ever really SAY what "precision damage" is. It's not something that's defined. And therefore it's not something you (or frankly, we) should be using like it does have a definition. It's only definition is an implied definition that it's damage that inflicts a vital organ or otherwise strikes a specific weak spot on the enemy. If something is called "sneak attack" though... it works the same as all sneak attacks.

How do the two organizations operate within Mendev and the Worldwound?

There's no Blood War but I reckon that there's still a dire threat to the principles of law brewing in the demonic wasteland.

The official stance is that the Worldwound is objectively bad but moreso for the fact that it's spreading chaos than anything else.

The Chruch of Asmodeus: The church enjoys the fact that the Worldwound distracts the good guys, and in fact, the fact that Cheliax "fell" to House Thrune and diabolisim was partially a result of the Inner Sea region being distracted by things like the first Mendevian crusade. So the Church of Asmodeus is kinda likin' how distracting the Worldwound is. The church has no real role in Mendev.

Hellknights: The Worldwound is far away, and they've got more immediate concerns for the most part. They don't have a big role at all in Mendev.

1)I heard that there is a 0HD bird race in the Innersea Bestiary, is this true? If it is then what are they called?

2)What is the RP cost of the new 0HD race in the Innersea Bestiary? I know the Lashunta was 7 and the Android was 16 if they numbers are still accurate anyway.

3)Why is the plant race from Nex?

4)How different stat wise are the Monkey Goblins to the standard Goblins?

5)If there is a new bird race what kind of bird is it based on and were is it from?

6)Will we ever see more powerful(CR4+) types of Goblins like with shapechanging abilities, strange magical abilities, etc. like from the myths?

7)Are Snow Goblins actually a different species of Goblin?

1) That's still a secret.

2) Lashunta is now 11; we decided to power them up because they're probably the most anticipated 0 HD race in the book and if they came out and were perceived as being one of the weakest races in the game, that'd be laaaaaame. The other RP costs are, I believe, all between 10 and 20, but I could be wrong. We'll have more to say around November.

3) Because Erik wants a plant race, and Erik likes Nex, and because Erik came up with a really cool backstory for why there'd be a plant race in Nex.

4) Different enough that they deserve their own monster page.

5) See #1 above.

6) Yes. They're called barghests. :P

7) Nope. They're just goblins who live in the snow.

Before I start answering these... where the heck is Wyroot from?

Mr. James Jacobs,

Can an summoner change the eidolon's base form at each level like he changes the evolutions?

No.

That'd be like picking a new race for your character each time you level up. That would drive me ABSOLUTELY NUTS as a player AND as a GM if someone in a group did that.

Or a character changing/switching personalities everyday?

sanity check: 1d20 ⇒ 6

I've asked a couple of question elsewhere that I haven't gotten answered yet. (Well, one technically has but I like answers from the devs.)

What happens if you use a genie wish to restore a city or a landmass?

What color are Korvosa's Gatefoot and Pillar Wall?

See Pathfinder #24 for some discussions about genies and wishes. What happens if you use a genie's wish to do ANYTHING is up to the GM. Could rebuild a city... could just rebuild a neighborhood.

They're probably dark gray or black, like most of the town's stonework.

Can anyone, James or otherwise, link to this post? I'm always in favor of stripping down skill systems when possible. Thanks!

If this is referring to the simplified skill rules that appeared in the early alpha for Pathfinder... I don't have the link. And I'd rather not link anyway... those rules ended up being really hated and that's why they're not in the game today.

Whether or not they were hated because they were bad or because people feared change, though... I can't say.
