If you were to design the Witcher as a full BAB class in PF, what are some things you'd do?

Hi James,

1) Any plans for Halloween this year? Do you have any yearly traditions?

2) For your dinosaur art orders, do you specifically request feathers for the coelurosaurs (group containing Deinonychus, etc)? Or was that a specific thing the artist did?

Thought you might like this;

So in our game last night we were on a massive walkway in a destroyed city when a swarm of wights rushed at us from the other side (half of which promptly fell through the big hole in the cent of the walkway, think =O= as the design) followed soon by cultists and initiative was rolled. During the first round we were given persecution checks to notice a loud receptive booming coming closer and soon a wight T-Rex appeared;

Party: Oh $#%t!

Me: Could be worse, seeing as how Morgues can control bigger bodies in Pathfinder.

GM: (looks at me with deer-in-headlights face for a second) That. Is. Awesome! Let me set this back up.

Me: Muahahahahahah!

Would Quadrens make for a good symbolic weapon for Incubi?

Mr. James Jacobs,

Your opinion on something: I have a Mountebank (Dragon Compendium) and he is no longer tied to his infernal patron (Mephistopheles). He is currently gaining his power from the spirit of Khorvosa. AT 20th level a mountebank would turn into a half-fiend. Since his patron is city spirit what would you think his 20th level transformation would most likely be? Following similar lines if he were gain his power from claiming the power of a star tower what would his 20th level transformation be?

Also, do larvae manifest in the world wound? While their appearance might seem inconsequential to the casual observer if they did manifest directly in the world wound I can see those suitably knowledgeable about planar matters being terrified.

I'm actually not familiar with the Mountebank class at all, so I don't really have much input there. And when you mention "Khorvosa" do you mean the city "Korvosa" or something else I'm not aware of? In any event... your GM would be the best person to talk to about this type of thing since he/she knows more about the situation and the campaign your character is in than I do.

Larvae only manifest on the Abyss. It's a Knowledge (planes) check to know about them, but not a very high check. Maybe DC 15 or 17.

Not much, actually. The part we were really inspired by it has to do with the god Camazotz, who we talk a little about in "Lords of Chaos" and a bit more about in Pathfinder #18.

Eventually we'll have more to say about Xibalba... but not right now.

Also, in preparing to GM the AP, I'm a little concerned about my own ability to represent how truly, despicably, and irredeemable evil demons are. Words can't describe how deeply E-V-I-L they are...but I feel like my party would resent me if I played them like that. Suggestions for playing them well? Or for developing the thick skin to let my party hate me for my vile NPCs?

The best way is...

Spoiler:
... to use Irabeth to talk more about him. Use her to tell the PCs stories about him and perhaps say that she suspects he may have had something to do with the original fall of Drezen so many years ago, but that she never found proof before he fled. You can also have captured enemies talk about how frightening and scary he is! ANY of the bad guys can say things like "Staunton will crush you!" or whatever (although you might wanna make their comments more interesting than that!).

My suggestions for playing demons are pretty well enumerated in the 64 pages of Lords of Chaos and the 64 pages of Demons Revisited. If you REALLY want to make them vile and evil, then yes... you need to be able to separate the hate your player characters have for your NPCs from their feelings for you! :)

Ameiko is my favorite Sandpoint NPC, no question.

OH! You said MINOR NPC.

Hmmm... I kinda quite like Farmer Grump, but Pillbug Podiker is a really fun bad guy as well. Hannah's pretty cool too, as is... well... I'll stop before I just name everyone in town! :P

Alternatively, could said Diabolist learn a mighty Infernal Duke's true name and force it to imbue him/her with Mythic Power?

Thanks!

The methods by which ANY character can gain mythic power are left squarely in the GM's hands, so that the GM can decide what constitutes a good source for his/her game. Bargaining with a devil is certainly on theme for gaining great power, but in a case like that I'd likely attach some sort of mythic disadvantage to the PC as well... and the PC would likely not know what it is at first.

1) From someone who has never played it, can Call of Cthulhu still be played effectively if you replaced all the mythos stuff with demons and such like?

2) What are your thoughts on such a game?

3) If the answer is basically no, is there a game out there that had the feel of CoC without the Cthulhu?

1) Yes. In fact, the underlying rules for Call of Cthulhu, "Basic Roleplaying," are akin to the d20 rules. They're pretty robust and can be used for all sorts of games.

2) I'd rather play Call of Cthluhu WITH demons in it. Which is kinda what Call of Cthulhu already is. There are plenty of scenarios for the game that don't touch the Lovecraft mythos at all and simply utilize other traditions for their horror themes.

3) Answer's yes, so this question is moot.

Do you have hopes that The Hobbit film, with 13 dwarves, will inspire less stereotypical dwarves, or are the film dwarves still too stereotyped, or is the problem that they're all Tolkien dwarves (it being The Hobbit by Tolkien)

Not really. The Hobbit dwarves, are, after all, where a lot of the stereotypes come from in the first place.

I'd like to know that as well, as my brother and I are big fans of dwarves.

Also, have you ever proposed an idea for Golarion to the other staff members that was WAY too silly?

Has anyone proposed an idea that YOU thought was too silly for Golarion?

For some reason, in a campaign my brother and me played in as teens, we developed an artifact that has popped up in every campaign since: a glossy periodical containing depictions of scantily-clad half-orc women that causes anyone who attempts to read it (for the articles, of course!) to fall backwards down the stairs in horror. If they're in a place WITHOUT stairs, for some reason a staircase seems to suddenly be behind them that wasn't there two seconds ago.

The one time it wound up in a serious game, it ended up being the plot hook, as the stairs my brother's character fell backwards down in the middle of a desert led to the dungeon for the session.

Turns out... if you like dwarves, it kinda doesn't matter what I think about them. Personally, I prefer elves, and in a LOT of ways, elves as depicted are the opposite of dwarves.

I've had some ideas that the rest of the staff thought were kinda silly, but usually I kinda know that they are before hand and use their reactions to confirm that my gut was right. In other cases, they think something's silly (like naming a fat demon "Erotunde") but I think it's fine.

There's been a LOT of silly ideas for Golarion. A HUGE number of them. The vast majority never get into print because they're just not appropriate. Sometimes they slip through the cracks though.

Humor is the hardest genre to write, I think, and it's the easiest one to use to ruin verisimilitude and hard work. I'm pretty hesitant to turn Golarion into a joke. I've seen it happen before to other campaign settings I love and it didn't appeal to me. I don't want to do that to fans of Golarion.

You could play them simultaneously, but their levels pretty much entirely overlap; the level range in Emerald Spire is from 1st to about 12th or 13th if I recall right... but there's LOTS of opportunity to diverge from the spire to adventure elsewhere.

I was wondering, what do you think of the way lycanthropes work in Pathfinder?
As with their three different forms and their (at least natural ones) ability to shift at will as well as the fact that afflicted lycanthropes can't afflict others, while in more traditional versions every werewolf can inflict the curse and usually they only have two forms one human and one quite bestial, even if still humanoid (they don't use weapons or armor but only claws and teeth) and traditionally don't shift shapes at will (although that has changed in popular media).
Which of these "rules" would you have preferred on lycanthropes in Pathfinder, if not the ones they already follow?

A friend showed me this halftime show of the Ohio State Marching Band and I thought you might appreciate it. Especially around 5 minutes in :P

What do you think of this character concept?

Victus, N ancientborn ranger:

No one wants the knowledge of how dhampir come to be born of humans and nosferatu. With the parents of Victus, the meeting was less than desirable. Fearful of zealous relatives and neighbors, Victus' mother fled for her life, coming to live in the wilderness of Varisia. There, Victus was born. Many times, he wished he hadn't.

The boy was born foul of features, even for ancientborn. He lacked a nose, and his mouth was filled with too-sharp teeth. As he grew older, his body remained gaunt, though his arms grew strong from hunting for himself and his mother.

One day, he had landed the killing blow on a deer, when he looked back home and saw smoke rising. When he returned, he found a gang of goblins setting fire to his home, and heard his mother's dying screams. One of the goblins noticed the young dhampir, and thought he would be easy pickings.

The goblin was wrong.

Victus regained his senses to find himself bathed in the blood of goblins, with torn limbs and smashed bones strewn though his land. His father's blood surged, and he tasted the goblins' blood, and found it to his liking.

Victus now lives as a sellsword, supplying his tracking services and his hunger for goblinoid blood to those who pay. He never attacks humans, as a token of respect to the mother he loved so much, but no goblinoid survives his presence.

And if he ever finds his father, there will be Hell to pay.

Also a test of my (probably purple) writing skills!

You still can.

Think of Thornkeep as a small deck of cards. Think of Emerald Spire as a HUGE deck of cards. You can combine the cards together by spacing the Thornkeep cards into the first half of the Emerald Spire cards, thereby creating an adventure bigger than either on its own. It wouldn't really work to put all the Thornkeep Cards in order at the front of the Emerald Spire deck, and wouldn't work AT ALL to but the Thornkeep Cards in the back!

1) Turns out the Swashbuckler's getting her own full-blown base class! And it's not really a question, in my opinion, about it being a good archetype. It has to be a niche that can support a full 20 levels. Archetypes are, generally, designed to touch only 1 or 2 or 3 levels, and as such most simply aren't appropriate as base classes at all.

2) One way I do this is to have lots of visual aids. I keep pictures of the NPCs handy, and when they're on screen I indicate the picture. When they're not, I clip them to a GM screen or pin them to a wall so they stay visual. This way, there's a constant visual update to them during the game. And this lets you use a big felt-tip pen to X them out if they die! I used this technique while running "Beyond the Mountains of Madness" (which has DOZENS of tagalong NPCs) and it worked great!

3) I would LOVE to publish a Guide to High Level Play book for GMs and Players alike. I've been trying to convince management to do just such a book for a while... but it's hard to build momentum there when the perception is that player option books are SO much more viable...

On the topic of lycanthropes, I was going over the lycanthrope rules to prepare myself for Blood of the Moon, and thinking back to the old 3.5 versions. Could you perhaps tell me the reasoning behind a specific change? Namely that: In 3.5, shape-shifting into the various non-humanoid forms gave you static bonuses to your abilities. In PF, if I read things correctly, your stat will be buffed to that of the creature, or will not change if your stat is higher. SO in theory a barbarian with a 20 Str that becomes a werebear wouldn't get any increase of STR even when changing. Either I misunderstood something, or I'm a bit confused why that limitation was put in place.

SO in theory a barbarian with a 20 Str that becomes a werebear wouldn't get any increase of STR even when changing. Either I misunderstood something, or I'm a bit confused why that limitation was put in place.
That was put in there to keep things more normalized between forms, I believe.

FlySkyHigh, that's not quite correct. The Barbarian STR would go to 22 when in Hybrid or Animal Form.

Essentially it is the following:

Change your Str, Dex, and Con to the animal's base stat - unless your stat is already higher - and then add +2 to Str and Con.

Compare the Hybrid Werewolf (From Bestiary 1) to the base human form who has a Con of 14 but the Hybrid Form has a Con of 17. This is because the base wolf has a Con of 15. Then if you look at said werewolf's base human form's Str, we see it has 17. That 17 changes to a 19 in Hybrid form but the base Wolf Animal has a STR of 13.

Major Edit: The Rules on Lycanthropy majorly lack consistency. In Bestiary 1 the rules works as I described above. In Bestiary 2, the weretiger DOESN'T follow the rules as described in Bestiary 1. This is before Broken Moon muddled up the rules for Curing Lycanthropy even further (and they weren't all that clear to begin with. Do you need to take the ability damage from Wolfsbane or not? Plus, I could be wrong, but I thought Belladonna and Wolfsbane were the same thing...)!

So now that bestiary 4 is out, I was wondering if you could see Randall Flagg statted up as a Great Old One?

Nope.

1) He's Stephen King's IP.

2) He's more powerful than a demigod if his claims to be who he says he is in "The Stand" are legit, so wouldn't get stats anyway.

I think it also bears keeping in mind is that Randall Flagg is as scary as he is, becasue the world generally doesn't have scary things like demons, dragons, lizardmen, and the whatnot as standard fare. That until the End, everything, including presumably Flagg himself, was just... ordinary. As are the protagonists of the book.

not quite...

Flagg shows up in a LOT of King's stories, including some, like "Eyes of the Dragon" or the Dark Tower stories, that actually DO have lots of demons and dragons and the like.

I wasn't asking him *to* be statted up, just if Great Old One would be fitting.

But yeah, I see what you mean.

Not in particular. The fallout should depend on how the woman died, and how much her spouse knows. If the party let her die because of crass and stupid reasons and she finds out about them, getting her raised should be the beginning of mending fences with her. Remember also there's those negative levels that need to be minded of as well, especially if the party fails to take care of them.
